Icons on my (computer) desktop:

aldld Might as well go all the way (384 comments)

I like how the two most popular options are "5 or fewer" and "More than 20". I guess if you're going to have icons in the first place, you might as well go all the way.

iOS Update May Tackle iPhone 4's Antenna Problems

aldld Re:I already solved the antenna problems (282 comments)

I've lost a call twice on a 2 mile drive just the other day.

Maybe they think you deserve that, for talking on your phone while driving.

Facebook Usage Hits 16 Billion Minutes a Day

aldld Re:No we don't. (107 comments)

Well, I know a lot of non-geeks who often open up a browser window, go to Facebook (or some other sites), and when they go do something else leave the window and don't bother closing it. Eventually they forget about it and they end up having Facebook open for hours, or sometimes even days.

By "aspy losers" do you refer to Asperger's syndrome?

I think he means people who use ASP.

aldld Re:8 hours (454 comments)

You are probably right, but when I first bought it I really only expected about 5 hours, based on my experience with previous computers.

aldld 8 hours (454 comments)

My netbook's battery lasts for about eight hours. I'd say that that's pretty good, considering that the advertised battery life is 10 hours.

Israel Repeals iPad Ban

aldld Re:Very true (180 comments)

Exactly. Tablets (like the iPad) are generally meant to be used for different things than what I (and most people I know) use a full computer for.

I don't really consider the iPad to be much of a computer.

Where To Start In DIY Electronics?

aldld Re:Very important first step (301 comments)

Another lesson: Don't breathe the fumes. I have no idea if they are toxic or not, but whenever I inhale a lot of it, I get a bit of a headache. I may just be imagining it but it becomes harder to concentrate for the next few minutes.

That and it smells bad too.

Yeah, I don't see many with yellow handles. The one that I use (Weller) is this old one that is all cyan on the handle.

Google Is Leaving China

aldld aldld writes  |  more than 4 years ago

aldld (1663705) writes "After Friday's announcement that China would not cave on censorship regulations for Google, which came after Google announced that they would not censor their searches, this showdown seemed imminent. With neither party prepared to cave, the Financial Times is reporting that Google is 99.9% certain that they will quit the Chinese market."

EMV PIN verification "wedge" vulnerability

aldld aldld writes  |  more than 4 years ago

aldld (1663705) writes "The EMV protocol is used worldwide for credit and debit card payments and is commonly known as “Chip and PIN” in the UK. Our analysis of EMV has discovered flaws which allow criminals to use stolen cards without knowing the correct PIN. Where these flaws are exploited – in the “wedge” attack – the receipt and bank records would show that the PIN was correctly verified, so the victim of this fraud may have their request for a refund denied. We have confirmed that this attack works in the UK, including for online transactions (where the terminal contacts the bank for authorization before completing the purchase). It does not apply to UK ATM transactions, which use a different method for PIN verification."
