Arecibo Radio Telescope Confirms Extra-galactic Fast Radio Pulses

alphaminus Re:First contact? (95 comments)

Being extragalactic, if so they would likely be from a long dead civilization, but yeah. Also that would have to be one hell of an antenna.

Musk Will Open Up Tesla Supercharger Patents To Spur Development

alphaminus Re:He continues to show himself to be ... (230 comments)

I'd say it's pretty smart for shareholders if the tech takes off and he sees compatible fast charging stations nationwide. Imagine is one of the early car manufacturers had held on to the patent for the gasoline nozzle, we might all be riding trains for cross country trips.

Imparting Malware Resistance With a Randomizing Compiler

alphaminus Copying the Bad Guys (125 comments)

Some malware already does this, which definitely helps it evade heuristic scans. Sounds worth exploring, but i bet it will make the AV they force me to run at work that much more frustratingly restrictive.

When it comes to (download) bandwidth needs, I require..

alphaminus Re:Latency is also important (279 comments)

Yeah, I have a client that went from 10Mbps to 85Mbps, but their latency tripled and they started complaining about delay on their VoIP calls and dropped Citrix connections. I have a gamer friend who kept his Cable Modem over FiOS, because it had lower latency and he claimed that 10ms was enough to make the difference between being killed online and killing the other guy.

How much I care about GMO food labeling:

alphaminus beside the point (461 comments)

Really, a GMO could be safer, or less safe, or the same as anything else. The main problem I have with them is related to intellectual property. I propose a compromise. Must be labeled "This Crop was engineered by a litigious group of assholes that think the can patent genes."

EU To Vote On Proposal That Could Ban All Online Pornography

alphaminus Re:What word is translated "Pornography"? (853 comments)

I understand that it is a legal document that exists in several languages including english, i guess I'm just wondering if the EU definition of the term is any less nebulous that the US's "I know it when i see it."

alphaminus What word is translated "Pornography"? (853 comments)

I doubt that it is erotic imagery or copy that they are banning.

Australian Federal Court Rules For Patent Over Breast Cancer Gene

alphaminus Prior Art? (160 comments)

Umm, isn't the cancer itself prior art? Anyone who developed the BRCA1 mutation could claim to have created it previously.

UK ISP PlusNet Testing Carrier-Grade NAT Instead of IPv6

alphaminus This is just the beginning (445 comments)

Rather than doing this correctly, it will go like this. All "home" users will get CG-NAT. "Business" users will be allowed public IPs at a steep premium, and only when that possibility is completely exhausted, will IPv6 truly begin to be implemented. Hell, people might just use duct tape code and NAT subterfuge to drag this out another decade or two.

Just like we used to with desktops. Then take them to our favorite carrier. I want a data only plan so I can do all my calls over VOIP. DIY mobile please.
