Google Charging OEMs Licensing Fees For Play Store

ameyer17 Re:Google already has a noose on manufacturers (225 comments)

The only phones where the mic is always on are the Moto X, Droid Mini, Droid Ultra, and Droid MAXX. The Nexus 5 is the only phone with the Google Experience Launcher, which only listens when the home screen is on.

NSA Collects 200 Million Text Messages Per Day

ameyer17 With apologies to Lee Greenwood (287 comments)

I'm not proud to be an American
Cause I know that I'm not free
I pity all the men who died
So Bush and Obama could take my rights from me
Now let me stand up next to you
And defeat them still today
Cause there ain't no doubt they hate this land
Bush and Obama hate the USA...

Seriously, everyone responsible for the excesses of the National Sodomization of America should be extraordinarily rendered then executed without trial for treason.

Ask Slashdot: How To Diagnose Traffic Throttling and Work Around It?

ameyer17 Re:an incorrect theory, because port mirroring (251 comments)

But I wouldn't think the extra few ms of latency would slow the data flow by 95%. In fact, I don't think it'd even be noticeable to the naked eye except for exceptional circumstances like gaming.

Verizon Asks Court To Affirm 'Most Reliable' Claim

ameyer17 Re:Atleast for me.... (111 comments)

on the two or three occasions I couldn't get a Verizon signal, she has been able to get a good AT&T signal.

Anecdote time...
On Amtrak trains between Chicago and Carbondale, IL, Verizon seems to work almost the entire time, whereas all the other carriers have significant coverage dropouts.
On the other hand, I have issues with my cell phone in my home.

Microsoft Changing Users' Default Search Engine

ameyer17 Re:Want more ad money? Bash Microsoft ! (389 comments)

Ah, but it's entirely relevant to reverse engineering executables.

When said executables are part of a DRM (or my preferred term, Fair Use Circumvention Kit) system. Which these aren't.

iPhone 3.0 Update Delivers Prodigious Patch Batch

ameyer17 Re:Yeah, but iTunes 8.2 (150 comments)

More like "should have been in 1.0" in some cases
Seriously, no copy and paste in 2009?

And it's theoretically possible Apple will release a 2.2.2 firmware for the iPod Touch with backported security fixes.

Apple Bans RSS Reader Due To Bad Word In Feed Link

ameyer17 Re:Bad words? (254 comments)

Or in this case, sees the swear word if they watch the Hitler video.
Though, another possible explanation is that whoever review the app hates either the EFF or the Downfall subtitle meme.

Microsoft Patents the Crippling of Operating Systems

ameyer17 Re:Who cares? (394 comments)

How about a linux distro where you get vanilla distro for free, but the distributor charges extra to unlock chocolate sauce and cherries?

I think that is/was Xandros's business model.
It's not necessarily GPL-incompatible.

Microsoft Patents the Crippling of Operating Systems

ameyer17 Re:Huh? (394 comments)

My first thought was shareware. The only "innovative" thing in this patent is a s/software/operating\ system/. I suspect this patent will be declared "obvious" and nullified if someone challenges it.

Lawsuit Says Google's Sale of Keywords Is Illegal

ameyer17 Re:Look at the coupons on your register receipt (247 comments)

Where I come from, the ads on the receipt are preprinted and only geographically targeted.

On the other hand, they do have a separate printer that prints out (presumably behaviorally targeted) ads.

has anyone else noticed that the slashdot.org homepage triggers the live bookmark in Iceweasel/Firefox?

And completely fails in Mobile Safari.
Also, for what it's worth, the setting seems to be "use beta index" under "index beta settings" on http://news.slashdot.org/help

Apple Reconsiders, Approves NIN iPhone App

ameyer17 Re:I dont get it (146 comments)

The Android Market is far more open than the Apple app market.

Plus, IIRC, it's possible to distribute Android apps without having to go through their app store.
