Not Enough Women In Computing, Or Too Many Men?

angelbunny Am I the only female on Slashdot? (686 comments)

I feel like it.

First of all, men are more for the dog eat dog competition while females choose to help first and compete second, in comparison to males. Because of this females tend to stick in groups. If we are alone and surrounded by sausages it takes away the advantage and comfort we are use to.

When I went to college (I'm only 22, so not that long ago.) there was more females in my comp sci classes than males. When I went to Intel there was more females to males hired. However, all it takes is one asshat guy to come in and be disrespectful enough to push us away. We will go be in our group somewhere else by transferring to a different part of the company.

Not only that but females have more non work issues to deal with that pulls us away. We also have to deal with promotional issues. Men brag to others about what they do for their ego, for what makes them feel good. Females tend to help each other to feel good. With the exception of the few are willing to segregate ourselves out from the crowd and push forward in the work world.

I can say a lot under the subject but take it with a grain of salt. My personal experience often varies from the majority and I'm not trying to create a stereotype.

White House Holding Piracy Summit

angelbunny PRO-IP Act (268 comments)

According to wikipedia the history of the law that ties Obama into appointing a copyright czar is:

"On 2007-12-05 introduced into the House of Representatives by John Conyers. [3]
On 2008-05-08 the House of Representatives passed the bill 410 to 11. 2008 Presidential candidates Ron Paul and Dennis Kucinich are among those who voted against the bill.[4][5] The Senate bill was S 3325.[6]
On 2008-10-13 President George W. Bush signed the bill into law."

More crap being blamed on Obama yet again on Slashdot? What is with you guys? I'm no Obama fan but I don't blindly point fingers at others either.

FCC May Pry Open the Cable Set-Top Box

angelbunny Re:CableCARD/Tuning Adapter-enabled TiVos (222 comments)

I believe this is true. If it is OTA then it should not legally have any type of anything that restricts recording: firewire, usb, encryption, copyright flags, ... anything.

angelbunny MERGE (222 comments)

This is exactly what was happening. Hulu is owned by NBC. First, comcast adds a monthly cap the second hulu becomes popular. This doesn't work as well as intended and comcast now has a giant competitor. What does Comcast do? They merge with NBC. wa-la! Comcast is still a monopoly in many areas.

I live out in the forest. I get 1 OTA (2 if I put the antenna on the roof) channels, and I'd have to cut holes in the trees to get sat. Also, since I'm right off the ocean I have a feeling the fog bank wouldn't help. Comcast out here has a monopoly.

FCC May Pry Open the Cable Set-Top Box

angelbunny Re:cablecard is dead (222 comments)

It should be $0 a month for the first cable card and $2.05 for the second. If you're paying $4.10 a month you've either got more than two cable cards, 2 cable cards and a cable box connected to another tv, or you're being ripped off.

angelbunny Re:cablecard is dead (222 comments)

With Comcast it is $16.90 for an HDTV dual DVR tuner too (watch one channel and record another). The price is insane.

Hopefully next father's day TiVO will have another sale so I can get my grandmother a TiVO with lifetime subscription for $500.

WPA-PSK Cracking As a Service

angelbunny Re:who uses WPA anyways? (175 comments)

Do not underestimate wifi distance.

Years ago I was bored so I made a cantenna (sp?) and was able to crack wep from wifi sources a couple of miles out. (it was a pain in the ass but a fun experience)

To be fair, I'm on a slight hill, the can was in the attic of a two story house pointing out on a mount that I could angle quite precisely to get a signal. If even a slight gust of wind would come by (not enough to visibly notice shaking) it would kill the signal. But yes, a couple of miles out.

"Accidental" Download Sending 22-Year-Old Man To Prison

angelbunny Re:Wow is this scary (1127 comments)

OSX comes with tools for this.

Standard, the OS supports:
-Encrypted HDD
-Secure Delete
-Wiping free space (1,3,7, and 35 pass I believe). This could be automated using a line or two of terminal magic.

I hope I'm not advertising to much here.

Best PC DVR Software, For Any Platform?

angelbunny Re:PlayOn or Boxee (536 comments)

Again, how is that different than Plex/XBMC? That is exactly what plex does.

Best PC DVR Software, For Any Platform?

angelbunny Re:BitTorrent (536 comments)

No. Use plex. It is awesome with hulu! (but unfortunately is still flash.. uggg)

All you have to do is go to their website and create an account. Then from there I set it to higher quality video in my account playback options and then searched for shows I wanted. I hit the subscribe button on those shows.

After that I go into plex (xbmc would most likely work too) and put in your account info. From there it will have a menu of subscribed shows with their eps. Once you watch the ep it leaves that list. Also, everything plays in 480p... not perfect quality so i'd recommend bit torrent if you have a large TV but for the most part it works wonders.

Another issue I have is if I'm away for more than a month and I've subscribed to a show the ep will disappear. I watch the type of shows that you really want to see every ep. It is annoying to manually have to download an ep that disappeared before I got around to it. Personally, I enjoy watching most shows in bulk. for one day I might watch 4 to 8 episodes of X show and just relax. I rarely watch 1 ep at a time. Hulu isn't perfect for that. By default I'm using private trackers + RSS and 720p for everything. I then wrote an auto extract script cuz plex can't see the .rar files. From there in plex next to hulu subscriptions i have my RSS subscriptions all in the same program ready for playback. This helps with HBO shows like true blood.

All in all, a mix of rss + hulu's subscription option depending on the show makes everything wonderful.

Best PC DVR Software, For Any Platform?

angelbunny Re:BitTorrent (536 comments)

They do. It is called Hulu.

My two complaints with hulu is:
1) Flash ..... ugg
2) They do not save the first couple eps of the first season of X show. If i'm interested in a new show I do not want to watch the current ep. I want to watch the first 4 eps then decide. I'm not going to buy a dvd box set for a show I've never seen before.

So yah BT ftw but Hulu is far better than nothing.

Best PC DVR Software, For Any Platform?

angelbunny Re:Cablecards and DVRs controlling 4 streams (536 comments)

Only the first cablecard is free. Every one after that is $2.05 a month for the same TV. If comcast finds out your broadcasting your content to other TVs they'll tac on another $6 a month for each TV that uses a cable card on top of the $2.05 .. if I remember the pricing right.

Best PC DVR Software, For Any Platform?

angelbunny RSS (536 comments)

My solution is a bit cheaper and arguably immoral.

What I do is setup an RSS feed to the TV shows I like and have them auto download. From there I watch everything on my TV/Computer/... all 720p and all drm free so I can do whatever I want with it. Also, most come in before the shows actually air here.

It isn't that I'm not paying for Cable TV, because I am. I'm paying for the shows I get. I just don't like the idea of not being able to do what I want to do with the content I'm paying for. Maybe one day cable cards will not be so restrictive and then I'll consider another alternative.

atm I'm quite happy using RSS to auto download everything I want.

This doesn't play live TV?

Does it have an advantage over Plex, XBMC, Boxee, ...?
