Weird. Ever since I learned about confirmation bias, I've been seeing it everywhere.

Is This the Golden Age of Hacking?

aquila.solo Re:Methinks it be the script-kiddies (213 comments)

In addition to the good points made in other replies, don't forget that many of the hackers are working from outside the U.S. and countries with whom we have extradition agreements. Labelling them a criminal is fine and good, but it may be next to impossible to serve justice without military action.

I'm sure you're right. But I think in that particular instance it would come by way of a "US ALCOHOL == PISS" post.

Since they're calculating in binary, your taking ten attempts to guess isn't really something to brag about. ;-)

The Dirty Little Secrets of Search

aquila.solo Re:Black hat SEO? (154 comments)

It's not like the AC and I were sitting at a table with a collection of cubes in our hands.

Or, to be more abstract, a collection of rectangular prisms. ;-)
Halfway through packing for a move, I really wish more boxen were uniform cubes.

I would draw the line at cloning...

aquila.solo Re:Side Effect of Human Cloning (471 comments)

Not just radiation, but chemicals! You can do some seriously cool stuff with chemicals.

Yes, I'm riffing on the classic comic book motif, but that statement can be taken at face value just as easily. In short, "don't know if sarcastic." <shrug>

Aboriginal Sundial Pre-Dates Stonehenge

I can think of at least one thing. ;-) The fact that there are still little aborigines running around suggests they may have thought of that, too.

Research Finds That Electric Fields Help Neurons Fire

aquila.solo It sounds like (287 comments)

This might push back the goalposts for the AI researchers. If neurons communicate over some distance, as well as directly with synapses, that would be several orders of magnitude more connections than we had thought.

Right, there wouldn't be any Youtube videos of cats chasing the little red dot from a laser pointer!~

New Direction for NASA?

aquila.solo aquila.solo writes  |  more than 3 years ago

aquila.solo (1231830) writes "NASA Administrator Charles Bolden on Obama's new directives:

"One was he wanted me to help re-inspire children to want to get into science and math — he wanted me to expand our international relationships and third and perhaps foremost, he wanted me to find a way to reach out to the Muslim world and engage much more with dominantly Muslim nations to help them feel good about their historic contribution to science... and math and engineering," Bolden said.

Seems to me that the best way for NASA to inspire children to study science and math is to be at the forefront of the world's science and math research, rather than transforming into some feel-good PR firm. But then, what do I know? I only grew up with Hubble photographs, solar system maps, and photos of shuttle launches on my walls to become a mechanical engineer."
