22-Year-Old Norwegian Magnus Carlsen Is the New World Chess Champion

arb phd slp Re:How does he do against computers? (131 comments)

He did say "moved on" to other games. I took it to mean "How would a properly prepared Watson do at those games?"

arb phd slp Re:How does he do against computers? (131 comments)

I would suspect that a computer much less powerful than Watson could be unbeatable at Wheel of Fortune. The Price is Right might be interesting--you could feed it tons of data about retail prices and not get everything. Could it extrapolate the price of one particular brand of cough drops or dishwasher from other similar products it already knows?

Scrabble Needs a New Scoring System

arb phd slp Re:Why not just version the Rules? (202 comments)

Mostly because nobody plays MTG anymore. WoTC destroyed that game.

Nobody plays? They've actually had four years in a row of record numbers of players. MTG is bigger than it's ever been. (And as someone who has been playing since 1994, the game is as good or better than it's ever been, too).

Ask Slashdot: How To Make a DVD-Rental Store More Relevant?

arb phd slp Re:Stop renting DVD's (547 comments)

In my area, there are three stores that sell vinyl records (one of these, that's all he sells). There are zero stores that rent DVDs. My advice is close the store, get a Redbox franchise and rent a spot next to the soda machine at the grocery store.

My relationship to military service:

arb phd slp Re:Missing option (525 comments)

Also, per capita gun ownership is increasing, but percentage of individuals/households that own a firearm has been steadily dropping. Statistically, what that means is that the same group of gun owners are hoarding larger and larger collections. If you've got a concealed-carry permit and are carrying two handguns, are you twice as protected?

On Daylight Savings Time:

arb phd slp Re:Oh I just love (475 comments)

You can't switch to self-feeding when a cat is an adult, but if you start when they're a kitten, and they grow up never having the experience of being hungry, they won't overeat. They'll nibble just what they need throughout the day. And they leave you alone instead of begging for food. (They might still wake you up because they're bored, but that's a separate problem).

The Data Crunchers Who Helped Win The Election

arb phd slp Re:Ummm... (208 comments)

How you voted is secret. That you voted is public record, same as the fact that that you're registered to vote. I wonder if they were correlating "vote vs. abstained" with results of past elections.

Ask Slashdot: The Search For the Ultimate Engineer's Pen

arb phd slp Re:Yes - liquid pencil? (712 comments)

You haven't had problems with the Sharpie liquid pencil making inconsistent lines? The "ink" runs dry intermittently in the ones I tried. I was disappointed, because if it worked properly, that would be my go-to writing tool.

Ask Slashdot: What Books Have Had a Significant Impact On Your Life?

arb phd slp Re:Not the Bible. (700 comments)

It's not so much that I can't handle real hardcore literature so much as I can't keep track of who is who when every character has six different nicknames that different people use interchangeably with no explanation. That made Brothers K impenetrable to me.

The bicycle I most often ride is ...

arb phd slp Re:Free bikes ? (356 comments)

The problem is that half of the US objects to bike sharing operations solely on the ground that they too closely resemble communism.

Taxis are communist?

He meant to say, "smacks of socialism."

No, he said it right. Those who can't tell the difference between bike-sharing services and socialism also can't tell the difference between socialism and communism.

CISPA Sponsor Says Protests Are Mere 'Turbulence'

arb phd slp Re:it is turbulance (258 comments)

I have no love for anybody who has voted for any US budget the last dozen or so years (think back to with Clinton, disregarding a few tricks, the budget was nearly balanced).

Was it a fabrication? More or less. Fact is she was shot but a nutjob not a wingjob. Psychosis not politics was the motivator.

What difference does it make what the motivation was? The action taken was the same.

And for most people who aren't criminally sociopathic, there is, and should be, a huge gap between "no love for..." and "shooting and killing".

CISPA Sponsor Says Protests Are Mere 'Turbulence'

arb phd slp Re:it is turbulance (258 comments)

We can change it. Unfortunately, violence may be required.

Let me point out what that would look like: Remember Gabrielle Giffords? A judge and a rep were shot, and a completely innocent kid got killed at the same time. You're talking about that times a thousand?

When Giffords was shot, we, as a nation, decided we didn't like that. (Or was the outpouring of sympathy just a fabrication by corporate-owned media?)

I'm sure your revolution will be completely different than that because your revolution will be based on rational grievances like copyright law, rather than schizo lunacy. And you'll only go after those awful, horrible, oppressors who no one likes. Also, your marksmanship is so much better that little kids won't get killed in your crossfire.

Patent Attorneys Sued For Copyright Infringement

Don't even write a story about it. THe crime itself is a "performance" and any depictions of it are unauthorized infringements on your intellectual property.

Nintendo Releases The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword

arb phd slp Re:You can't go home again (138 comments)

Wind Waker definitely brought that feeling back for me. Especially given the cartoony graphics. Despite its flaws, that game felt amazing.

LttP or OoT probably would have, except I didn't play them until a long time after they came out (OoT on Gamecube and LttP on Wii Virtual Console).

FAQ

arb phd slp arb phd slp writes  |  more than 5 years ago

"What do you do?"

I am a researcher and a speech-language pathologist.

"That doesn't sound like a Slashdotty kind of job. What are you doing here?"

I do R&D on augmentative and alternative communication systems. I learn a lot about new hardware and software things here.

"what?"

You know that computer rig that Stephen Hawking uses to communicate? That's an AAC system. I develop those. And do research on how to make them better and easier to learn.

It's the intersection of linguistics, human-computer interface design, hardware hacking, and the social sciences. It's about as geeky a field as I was able to find that also makes people's lives better in a very real and tangible way.

And I have to say, thank goodness for Dr. Hawking, because if it weren't for him I'd never be able to explain to people what I do for a living.
