Let Spouses of H-1B Visa Holders Work In US, Says White House

atari2600 Same old slashdot, same old circle jerk (566 comments)

Look up the lump of labor fallacy. In fact, allow me: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L... Labor isn't a zero sum game. More immigrants creates more jobs in the system.

Does the H1-B system need reform? Yes
Does the immigration system need reform? Yes
Does the L1 system need to be scrapped? Quite probably
Does slashdot circle jerk without getting the idea? Yep

Am I missing nothing? Yep.

Gov't Report Predicts Cyborgs, Rise of China for 2030

atari2600 Re:What do you mean by 2030? (219 comments)

Which delusional place are you from? Unless you meant "better" than China which is a different story, the following countries have
a higher standard of living than the USA:

- France
- Switzerland
- Australia
- New Zealand
- Netherlands
- Norway
- Luxembourg

A couple of those might be debatable and one can bring the population/area into the equation but if you want to go superlative, you better do your homework

I Name My Servers After:

atari2600 Composers here. (722 comments)

I name them after musical composers. Usually I start off with short names: Bach, Strauss, Mozart, Chopin before moving onto the longer names. This is usually for my own servers / private networks. If the machines are public facing, they usually follow a naming convention depending on the place (server number + role of the server + physical location usually is it).

Ubuntu 11.04, Slackware 13.37

atari2600 Re:Why upgrade? (266 comments)

Been on LTS releases since 6.06 for my work desktops. Run Debian on my test/server boxes though. I try out the non-LTS releases on my laptop but not too often. Even then with LTS, I have to use PPA repos since Ubuntu repos take forever to update :\

AT&T Admits Network Can't Handle iPhone, iPad Traffic

atari2600 Re:And the real reason they're admitting this (298 comments)

Well, in their eyes, the T-Mobile purchase IS ACTUALLY improving their network. They are spending close to 40 billion to improve their network. F AT&T.

AT&T To Acquire T-Mobile From Deutsche Telekom

atari2600 Re:Deal still subject to regulatory approval (748 comments)

I am in the same boat as you are. I was an AT&T customer for 6.5 years and then switched to Tmobile after a huge F'up by AT&T (should've taken them to the courts). If this deal goes through, I am going to Verizon. No way in hell will I ever be an AT&T customer.

TLDR version: Fuck AT&T

Does Syfy Really Love Sci-Fi?

atari2600 Re:Bills to Pay (742 comments)

Totally agree regarding SGU. I liked the show to begin with (watched it last month) and initially I felt sad but as season one progressed, I was getting sick of the bickering. It wasn't a dark show, it was just childish bickering. Then I checked the ratings and it made total sense. Bad shows need to be canned. Period.

Ubuntu Powered Tablet Spotted!

atari2600 Sigh (169 comments)

I guess the server's uptime is about the same as the tablet's boot-time once the /. crowd "spotted" the product.

Traffic Jams In Your Brain

atari2600 Re:Brains don't do percision (250 comments)

I believe the other reason is that manors are usually fortified and building walls / moats around how the brain works makes it harder to work.

Traffic Jams In Your Brain

atari2600 Re:how I did it (250 comments)

Pretty close to what I did. ( (300*300 + 50*300 + 7*300) ) - ( (300*11) + (50*11) + (7*11) ) This was reduced to (300*3+50*3+7*3)*100 - (3927) It's not hard at all but I learned mathematics in India.

Just Where Is The Lincoln Memorial, Anyhow?

atari2600 You need directions? (650 comments)

So people who want to goto the Lincoln memorial cannot do so without Google maps? That's like saying

1. I live in Seattle and I need directions to the Pike Place market
2. I live in Orlando and I need directions to the Disney World Resort
3. I live in Arizona and I need directions to the Grand Canyon

now the best part
4. I live in Vegas and I need directions to the strip.

Follow the bloody directions on the road or...bear with me here....use a fucking GPS. Granted, what Google did here is silly and appears juvenile (if they did anything that is), but Glenn Beck and his fans can go fuck themselves.

Mozilla Labs To Bring Address Book To Firefox

atari2600 Please fix Firefox 3.6 on Windows first! (80 comments)

Even with minimal addons, FF 3.6 on my Windows machine takes upto a gig of memory after about 30mins of usage/being left idle especially with flash based sites. I don't have this problem on my trust Ubuntu netbook but the version of FF on that machine is 3.8. In the last one week, I've had to recommend 4 Firefox users to switch to Chrome (they've never even heard of Chrome). What's happening Mozilla labs? (Do an internet search for "firefox 3.6 memory hog"). So, umm, before introducing new addons - why don't you fix your browser's issues on your largest install base eh?

Id Software bought out by Bethesda (ZeniMax Media)

atari2600 atari2600 writes  |  more than 5 years ago

atari2600 (545988) writes "Bethesda Softworks parent ZeniMax Media said Wednesday that it has acquired Id Software, the creator of legendary computer games such as Doom, Quake, and Wolfenstein. Bethesda's hit titles include The Elder Scrolls series and Fallout. The acquisition by ZeniMax Media joins together two of the finest, most respected videogame developers in the world, combining the first person shooter (FPS) expertise of id Software with acclaimed role playing game (RPG) developer Bethesda Game Studios — creators of the 2008 Game of the Year, Fallout 3, and the 2006 Game of the Year, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. Bethesda Softworks will publish the titles of id Software other than upcoming releases previously committed to other publishers."
