We've already been sold -- now they're just negotiating the price.

Slashdot Tries Something New; Audience Responds!

atomicxblue Re:Tradeoff in time. (2219 comments)

The lack of anonymous comments will kill /. Some people are in a situation where it isn't safe to comment using their login or unable to for other reasons. Sometimes, I've seen stuff relevant to the conversation that needed to be said, but people didn't want the backlash.

atomicxblue Re:The title says it all. (2219 comments)

This! I could honestly give a feck if it were entirely text based with no graphics. I come here for the conversation and from what I've seen in the beta, it is rather difficult to even try and follow one thread.

Slashdot Tries Something New; Audience Responds!

atomicxblue Re:Why? (2219 comments)

I quit reading Huffington Post because they require a facebook login with real names. I quit reading Kotaku and io9 because my finger got tired of endlessly scrolling past all the pictures for the one piece of text on the page. Kotaku and io9 both have major issues now that everyone can post whatever they want, regardless if it's on topic or not, but that's a different situation. I don't want to leave /. as well, but I took a look at the new beta site and my eyes hurt trying to keep up with all the busy. It looks like they are trying to copy the look that Gawker pushed out to all their sites. I don't see what's wrong with the classic. At very least, if everyone is going to be forced onto the new system, they should give people the option to keep the layout as it is through their profile.

North Korea's Home-Grown Operating System Mimics OS X

atomicxblue Re:Fuck BEta (252 comments)

I want to know why all of these websites are moving to formats that require you to scroll endlessly. Classic /. is so much easier to read and skip over stories you aren't interested in, but with the new system, it is just so busy, it makes my eyes hurt.

Press Used To Print Millions of US Banknotes Seized In Quebec

atomicxblue US Secret Service in Canada? (398 comments)

I'm really surprised that no one has mentioned this yet. Maybe I missed something, but since when does the US Secret Service have jurisdiction in Canada? I would have thought that the RCMP would have confiscated the press and turned the bills over to the Secret Service. (Btw -- I'm an American asking this...)

If I were them, I'd call their bluff... I'm sure it would be a major backlash worldwide because it would be seen as censoring what the press could report.

Atlanta Gambled With Winter Storm and Lost

atomicxblue Re:Learn to freaken drive. (723 comments)

6. Do what I did and go to the store a day before and haven't cranked up the car since I parked it. (But then, I was lucky that I didn't need to go anywhere Tuesday...)

Please don't equate the residents with failures by our government / city to prepare and implement a plan.

Atlanta Gambled With Winter Storm and Lost

atomicxblue Re:Heard a story on NPR this morning... (723 comments)

I know one local station here, immediately after the Governor said that this was "unexpected", ran down a list of exact times over the previous 24 hours where they reported it would be bad. It took about 2 mins to make it through the list, while she had a wry smile on her face the entire time.

The news today commented that we could have 5,000 plows and sand trucks, but even that would be useless if they aren't cranked up in time.

Atlanta Gambled With Winter Storm and Lost

atomicxblue Re:Pffft (723 comments)

I'm an Atlanta native and yes, we aren't used to driving on ice, but from what I've been reading from people in Northern states over the past few days, they even say driving on ice is dangerous. First, Chicago is relatively flat, but Atlanta grew up in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. Yes, our government failed us, but how are the residents supposed to drive up our hilly terrain when the roads weren't even pre-treated and covered with 1/4" inch of solid ice. None of us have winter tires, mainly because it would be a waste to buy them to use one or two weeks in a decade. If you tried to buy them inside the city, you will get odd looks and a few chuckles, because no place I know of even sells them. If it was just snow, we would have been fine, because we're used to driving in heavy summer rains. So, just don't get pissed when we laugh at you for saying 85 is "too hot".

It doesn't happen. No place that I know of in the city even keeps them in stock.

Sony Zaps PlayStation 3 'Install Other OS' Feature

atomicxblue atomicxblue writes  |  more than 4 years ago

atomicxblue (1077017) writes "According to the BBC website, this is not an early April Fool's joke but It appears that with update v3.21, Sony is planning to remove the 'Install Other OS' feature from the Playstation 3 in an effort to combat piracy. "Sony has said the update is optional, but those people that do not install it will no longer have access to features, such as its online games network and the ability to playback certain games or Blu-ray DVDs that require the most up-to-date firmware. A Sony spokesperson said that gamers would have to "accept" the update before it begins to install."

The original blog post describing the pending update may be found here."
