Bennett Haselton's Response To That "Don't Talk to Cops" Video

axehind My problem with talking to the police (871 comments)

I call it the "Police Skew". I'll give you a example. Lets say you got into a fight. A person punched you and you punched them back. The officer asks you what happened and you say "He punched me and I defended myself and punched him back". In the police report it ends up like "Suspect admitted to striking the other person." We see this type of thing constantly in the media. Look at recorded interactions with the police and then read the police report. You will see this type of thing all over the place.

Former MySQL CEO Mårten Mickos Talks About Managing Remote Workers (Video)

axehind It wasnt for me.... (100 comments)

I worked for MySQL in about the 2006 timeframe for about 6 months. Yes most employees telecommuted including me. I found out in those 6 months that telecommuting wasnt for me. I couldnt focus on work very well. It was ok for short time periods like a week. But I would start drifting and my productivity dropped. I'm not against it, it just isnt something I was good at. Most emplyees there didnt have any issue with it.

Ask Slashdot: Best File System For Web Hosting?

axehind XFS (210 comments)

If you need a large filesystems then go with XFS. RHEL only supports up to 16TB filesystems with ext4 and up to 100TB with XFS. I'm not sure at this point where the limitation comes from as it is limited even with X86-64.

What this guy says. Use hunting/trail cameras. They attach to trees or other things and they only activate on movement. They can be stolen but most can be attached and locked nowadays.

Salt water as fuel?

axehind axehind writes  |  more than 6 years ago

axehind (518047) writes "For obvious reasons, scientists long have thought that salt water couldn't be burned. So when an Erie man announced he'd ignited salt water with the radio-frequency generator he'd invented, some thought it a was a hoax. John Kanzius, a Washington County native, tried to desalinate seawater with a generator he developed to treat cancer, and it caused a flash in the test tube. Maybe this has some potential to be the next fuel.."

axehind (518047) writes "The ESA is preparing for future human exploration missions to Mars. They are currently looking for 12 volunteers to take part in a 520-day simulated Mars mission. The simulations will take place here on Earth inside a special facility in Moscow. A precursor 105-day study is scheduled to start by mid-2008, possibly followed by another 105-day study, before the full 520-day study begins in late 2008 or early 2009. Do you think you got what it takes?"
