IDC: PC Shipments Decline Worse Than Forecasted, No Recovery Expected

b00m3rang They're finally fast enough already (393 comments)

My computer is about 4 years old, in the past I've always been one to upgrade when a significant performance gain is available, but right now I can still play games on the highest settings and only use 1/4 of my CPUs. This is the first time I've ever worn out a CPU fan before I replaced the computer.

If you want your screen wall-to-wall website, just go full screen. It only takes a second to switch back and fourth.

US May Disable All Car Phones, Says Trans. Secretary

b00m3rang Re:But TVs are OK?! (1065 comments)

They make you release and reapply the parking brake if it thinks you're doing that. You'd have to wire a switch under the dash or something that you could flip off and on when needed.

Front seat displays are required to have a safety switch that only allows them to turn on when the parking brake is applied.

New Device Puts SSD In a DIMM Slot

b00m3rang Re:Whats the point (169 comments)

The power still comes from the power supply... where else would it come from? I guess it'd be useful if you have memory slots you're not using, but no extra drive bays.

Military Personnel Weigh In On Being Taliban In Medal of Honor

We'd better ban any books or movies that tell any story from a non-American point of view. Oh wait, that's right... video games must be treated differently than all other media. I forgot about the, "freedom of speech, except for video games" clause in the Constitution.

Calling Shenanigans On Super SATA's Claimed Audio Qualities

b00m3rang Doubt it's SATA cable interference (827 comments)

I doubt that interference from the SATA cable is an issue as some have suggested, since anyone half-serious about PC audio that’s using a PCI SoundBlaster should be slapped. It’s not expensive to get a decent, high-bitrate sound interface that operates via USB, FireWire, or a PCI interface that lets you put the analog guts halfway across the room from your noisy computer. Yes, PCs put out a bunch of EMI, but the CPU and video card are much worse culprits than an SATA cable ever could hope to be. I don’t claim to be an “audiophile” (for obvious reasons) but I do produce music and own a 10000 watt concert system, and have been paying attention for many years to what REALLY makes a difference in sound.

I saw a holographic arts exhibit in San Francisco in the late 80s that took up a huge warehouse. Saw some amazing stuff there, sad to see the art form is dying.

The CD Turns 25 Today

b00m3rang Are you sure about that ? (326 comments)

I'd be hard pressed to believe anyone is releasing professionally pressed CDs from master recordings that clip. I've also not heard a recording that sounded worse after peak normalizing to 0db. That'll give you good dynamic range, but won't ever clip. Some of the newer all-digital gear doesn't have as much headroom as the old analog gear, but you also don't have to push the levels as hard to get a clean recording.
