Sony Forgets To Pay For Domain, Hilarity Ensues

bad_fx Re:Sony playing catchup with Microsoft (277 comments)

How on earth do you figure this is a "blow" in the console war? Are you suggest that Microsoft was somehow behind this? Or is everything that gets reported on and is related to Playstation\Xbox now some sort of insidious plot to discredit one or the other console?

In reality it sounds like pure incompetence at Sony (and the same in the story you link about Microsoft) and I think when many people are affected by this sort of thing it's fair enough that it's covered on tech sites. It doesn't have to be part of some 'console war' that you parenthesize with apparent disdain while at the same time perpetuating the idea.

Megaupload.com Shut Down, Founder Charged With Piracy

bad_fx Re:Fuck RIAA/MPAA (1005 comments)

As a New Zealander I will be watching this case with interest, particularly how quickly\easily the extradition proceeds. New Zealand law on extradition states that extradition must relate to an offence that:

"Involves conduct that would be regarded as criminal had it occurred in New Zealand, and would have carried a similar penalty."

The penalties they're talking about here sound much higher than what I would expect in NZ... so I'll be interested to see how this turns out.

Thompson and 2K Come To Blows Over Manhunt 2

bad_fx I'm sure I'm not the first to suggest this (99 comments)

But I can't help wondering if Jack is actually on some game studio's payroll. Surely he must realise that all his hot air and bullshit does very little except give the very games he rails against free puplicity while making himself look like a complete twat...

bad_fx (493443) writes "It seems that the OLPC has shaken Microsoft a bit, as the beeb is now reporting that they will apparently be selling a package with "windows xp start, office 2007 and student 2007" for as little as $3. from the article:

Governments in developing countries can purchase the cut-price software, if they provide free PCs for schools.

"This is not a philanthropic effort, this is a business," Orlando Ayala of Microsoft told the Reuter's news agency.

Google Calendar and SMS Tricks

bad_fx bad_fx writes  |  more than 7 years ago

I recently started playing with google calendar in more detail, and found that it does some pretty cool things. The option to send you an SMS reminder for appointments is very cool. The way it allows you to add "quick events" by parsing a string something like "Movies on 17 Feb at 9pm" is also quite cool. The coolest one though has to be this:

http://telegramsam.googlepages.com/googlecalendarsmstricks

I was seriously excited about this one. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to work for me. In fact my SMS reminders don't come from the number in the article. And sending a message to either short SMS code doesn't do anything. bleh!

Open Sourcing plugins for Proprietary software

bad_fx bad_fx writes  |  more than 7 years ago Well, I decided to release a plugin for the Neverwinter Nights 2 toolset. Called YATT (or Yet Another Terrain Tool) it allows NWN2 builders to import heightmaps (along with other bits and pieces) into the toolset. Deciding how to release the source code was a bit of a head scratcher. I wanted to release it, and I wanted it to be under some sort of open source license, but what was the most appropriate took a bit of reading. Many seem to discourage linking to proprietary libraries (understandable) but in the case linking to the NWN2 Toolset libraries is needed. In the end I went for a modified version of the GPL, which I hope works for this and makes some sense...

In any case, enough rambling, if you have NWN2 and want to mess with YATT, you can find it here.
