Avast Buys 20 Used Phones, Recovers 40,000 Deleted Photos

baenpb Re:Who's at fault for this? (231 comments)

Agreed, but the money's not there. This promotes resale, which takes away from apple's.....i mean...the phone manufacturer's....bottom line.

Ask Slashdot: Video Streaming For the Elderly?

baenpb Re:Apple TV (165 comments)

I have no experience with Apple TV but I would say the same about roku. I'm a programmer in my 20s, and I get flustered by remotes with way too many buttons; i could imagine it would be worse if i was unaccustomed to electronics. Roku remote is simple, the (FEW) buttons are large and well labeled, and as long as there aren't too many apps installed, your grandparents should be able to easily find netflix.

New Study Links Caffeinated Coffee To Vision Loss

baenpb Re:OK... Next question: (203 comments)

So as a followup study, find the relationship between coffee consumption and compulsive masturbation? Could possibly be linked, based on personal anecdotal evidence.

To Encourage Biking, Lose the Helmets

baenpb Why do we put bikes on the road anyways? (1651 comments)

At risk of sounding like an ignorant American, Why do we force bikes onto the road in many areas? I went to school in Wisconsin, and students were occasionally ticketed for biking (or skateboarding or rollerblading) on the sidewalk, rather than the road. It seems to me that the sidewalk is a more appropriate place (bike vs pedestrian = stitches, bike vs car = death or brain damage) Of course sidewalks aren't available everywhere, but where they are, why are bikes forced off the sidewalks?

Facebook Tests the Waters With Paid Perks

baenpb Re:Freemium at its best (204 comments)

Agree. You might notice that only posts from a select few people are showing up in your stream, and you seem to see the same people repeatedly. That's not an accident on facebook's part, but I still don't understand why.

Pay Less If You're a Nice Person: Valve's Freemium Model For DOTA 2

baenpb Re:The secret formula (316 comments)

Why are pyros hated so much? I think they're one of the most strategically effective classes. I understand rage against snipers and spies, but pyros REALLY help round out a team if used effectively. -Demo/Pyro/Medic player

Pay Less If You're a Nice Person: Valve's Freemium Model For DOTA 2

baenpb Re:Currently, Matchmaker Cripples Nice Players (316 comments)

I'll back this up. One solution is to try to find people to play with regularly. If you have a group of 5, then matchmaking is done based on your team's collective skill, and you don't need to worry about teammates

Pay Less If You're a Nice Person: Valve's Freemium Model For DOTA 2

baenpb F2P Content reduction (316 comments)

My biggest fear about this model is that I will be limited in the gameplay elements I have available. For instance, when the game comes out, I was really hoping to pay a flat fee so that all heroes/items are available. I don't care about hats and skins, those should cost exorbitant money to the player so valve can keep up their profitable business model. If it's based on how "nice" a player is(however that's determined), I'll still have to play a few games before I can unlock items at a reasonable price. And I'll have to make sure I play support classes, help people out, buy wards, give compliments, and upvote other friendly people to increase my ranking (I'm guessing criteria here) This being said, I've played the beta extensively. I am a friendly player, and I do help noobs. I did the same in I'm sure this model will benefit me more than others, I just don't want to have limited content (or pay super high prices) when the game comes out.

Or a football league where the players are allowed steroid use? Sure would make things interesting.

How To Contribute To Open Source Without Being a Programming Rock Star

baenpb Re:The most needed thing... (120 comments)

Also the reason it's harder to get newbie programmers(like myself) interested in an open source project. "Welcome to the group, you're in charge of what the rest of us don't want to do!"

'Of Course We Are In a Post-PC World,' Says Ray Ozzie

baenpb Never understood the term "PC" (399 comments)

It means "personal computer", right? Must it have a keyboard and a monitor? How does "PC" preclude Mac OS, tablets, smartphones? Those are much more "personal" than my windows desktop IMO. I'd say the PC world is booming, but certainly shifting towards tablets and smartphones.

Apple Unveils New iPad

baenpb I guess it's time (989 comments)

for everyone to sell their old iPad! My biggest pet peeve, it's the most expensive "disposable" personal electronic device. It seems like it's embarrassing to be seen with the not-quite-latest version. (flamebait, i apologize.)

Ask Slashdot: What Is an Acceptable Broadband Latency?

baenpb Re:It all depends on distance... (396 comments)

Their "Test servers" might be the key word. If they're diagnosing a problem, perhaps their bandwidth-limited test servers are to blame, and connecting to their live servers would automatically be faster? Speculation, don't eat me if I'm wrong. 300ms is unacceptable for a high-speed connection. Yes it works for email, but that's not what you're paying for.

Angry Birds Downloads Pass Half-Billion Mark

baenpb Re:What the...? (94 comments)

500,000 downloads, but Rovio says it has shipped more than 10 million Angry Birds toys worldwide. I'm assuming it's 500,000,000. .6 minutes per download seems reasonable to me. As soon as you install on your ipod, iphone, and on every instance of chrome. And then you realize that the game sucks so you only play 5 minutes of it.

I can't say I've tried the tony hawk after a bout of MDMA. I'll have to try it. Usually I would be too busy jumping up and down to attempt to hold a controller.
