What Will Google Glass 2.0 Need To Actually Succeed?

balbus000 Re:Size (323 comments)

Disclaimer: I could probably be classified as a Google fanboy, but I do not own Google Glass.

I think these types of arguments are silly, because they take an already existing issue and then pretend that Glass is the only cause. Seriously, look around the next time you're in a restaurant. There are always people pulling out their cell phones to snap a picture of their food or friends, and of course people they don't know will be in the background of the photos. This is really what you're worried about with Glass? This already happens.

Do you think that the problem will be worse with Glass? If so, why? And how much worse?

Four Facepalm Bugs In USPS Label-Printing Site

balbus000 Re:Slashdot keeps aggravating their "audience" (182 comments)

I posted a comment on that article. There seemed to be a serious anomaly with the amount of Troll mods for that one article.

I am wondering if the gave Bennett unlimited mod points to use there.

Why Didn't Sidecar's Flex Pricing Work?

balbus000 Holy Shit (190 comments)

Who gave Bennett unlimited mod points?

Let's take a look at comments modded as Troll in past Bennett articles:

2014 Geek Gift Guide 2 comments marked Troll, both of them by Bennett

An Algorithm To Prevent Twitter Hashtag Degeneration 5 comments marked Troll, 3 of them by Bennett

Clarificiation on the IP Address Security in Dropbox Case 1 comment marked Troll

Big Talk About Small Samples 2 comments marked Troll, both of them by Bennett

Debunking a Viral Internet Post About Breastfeeding Racism 0 comments marked Troll

We Need Distributed Social Networks More Than Ello 0 comments marked Troll

An Algorithm to End the Lines for Ice at Burning Man 0 comments marked Troll

Now look at the mods on comments in this article - 40 comments have been marked as Troll. And most of them are comments badmouthing Bennett. Slashdot, you have some 'splainin' to do.

No More Foamy Beer, Thanks To Magnets

balbus000 Re:Head (130 comments)

I visited London over the summer, and went on a tour of Fuller's brewery. It was amazing. I wish that cask ale was more popular here in the States. I'm not aware of a place within 150 miles that I can get it. At least I still have a bottle of Fuller's Vintage Ale (bottle conditioned) that I brought home to save for a special occasion.

How Apple Watch Is Really a Regression In Watchmaking

balbus000 Re:Bleh (415 comments)

Yep, I clicked on Nerval's Lobster's profile link after a few of his submissions and saw the "Works for Slashdot" badge.

Why doesn't this badge show up next to a submitter's username, instead of only when they post comments? This should really be changed.

Automation Coming To Restaurants, But Not Because of Minimum Wage Hikes

balbus000 Re:Not gonna make it (720 comments)

What I do when I'm in a hurry is have my card ready before the server brings the bill.

When they bring it, don't let them set it down, just hand them your card.

Of course, this requires you to trust that the bill will be correct.

Ello Formally Promises To Remain Ad-Free, Raises $5.5M

balbus000 Re:Ironic: if you "OK" the manifesto it shares on (167 comments)

I imagine the intent is to make people who currently use the other social media sites comfortable with migrating to Ello. This way a user could start using it even though none of their friends are on it yet.

If Ello catches on and becomes popular, then users could stop doing the auto-push to other networks.

I haven't looked at their site, but hopefully they allow easily toggling that option. And hopefully they make signing up easy without tying it to your existing accounts.

Microsoft Runs Out of US Address Space For Azure, Taps Its Global IPv4 Stock

balbus000 Re:Don't Panic! (250 comments)

Is there a reason why ports still exist in IPv6?

If your ISP gives you a /64 for your house of 0:0:dead:beef::/64, then you could assign a /112 to a server in your house (say 0:0:dead:beef:0:0:1:0/128). So your server listens on multiple IP addresses instead of multiple ports on one IP address. A web server on that server would handle HTTP requests on 0:0:dead:beef:0:0:1:50, HTTPS would be 0:0:dead:beef:0:0:1:1bb, etc.

Big Telecom: Terms Set For Sprint To Buy T-Mobile For $32B

balbus000 Re:I would allow them to merge allright (158 comments)

So what we really need is cellular neutrality. The towers should be public infrastructure, and the cellular providers should become just like ISPs would be if there was net neutrality.

Patent Troll Ordered To Pay For the Costs of Fighting a Bad Patent

balbus000 Re:Newegg did that too? (191 comments)

I clicked on the first link to remind myself of the background for this story.

It links to the beta site.

Never again. Never again. Never again. Never again. Never again. Never again. Never again.

Also, when I'm on a story on the beta site, why does the button to return to Classic Slashdot take me to the Classic homepage, instead of the Classic version of that story?

Other notable minor changes (yes, I noticed the oxymoron too):

They don't want MS to be associated with bugs?

Alright, maybe they're okay with XP taking some heat, as long as Win 7&8 are implied to be better.

They're trying to make it harder to find what you need to build your own binaries?

Also, when did /. start auto-creating links? Yes, I used preview and actually edited my post before submitting. Although now since I said that, someone will point out a typo somewhere in my post.

Open Source Projects Using Best Practices?

balbus000 balbus000 writes  |  more than 4 years ago

balbus000 writes "I recently graduated with a degree in software engineering (software emphasis). However, most of the homework and projects given were extremely small scale. I want to be exposed to more "real-world" projects to help me in my career. What open source projects are out there that are well organized and use best best practices in object oriented design, design patterns, etc. and aren't bloated to the point where it would take me 6+ months to get up to speed with how it's structured? I mainly want to study the source code, but would also like to start contributing once I feel comfortable enough."
