Ask Slashdot: Best Flash-Friendly Router To Replace Aging WRT54GS?

bedammit Re:How many threads like this? (334 comments)

Whatever you do... Dont get the buffalo WZR-HP-AG300h I have an older WHR-HP54S which ball all accounts is the best router they ever made. I can say that the AG300h is very flaky and technical support will pretty much tell you that they "wait" for updates and have no resolution to the problems people report except to send another router. http://forums.buffalotech.com/t5/Wireless/WZR-HP-AG300H-Pro-firmware-still-in-alpha/td-p/79827

FCC Reserves the Right To Search Your Home, Any Time

bedammit Its called a loophole (589 comments)

Im sure they will keep this one around. It could prove to be useful like tax evasion laws. Using the FCC the government could enter your house because they suspect a device inside is in violation of the law. Brilliant. I'm going back to the Stone Ages right after this post. You can reach me by courier pigeon.

Time To Cut the Ethernet Cable?

bedammit Wireless security doesnt matter (496 comments)

All of you tout security when over half of you have or have had spyware and viruses on your windoze machines. The only thing that your neighbor cares about with your WIFI is if he/she can get online when they didn.t pay their bill or their Internet is down. ok? Oh and two of you want to search your neighbors hard drive for naughty pictures of the chick that lives there.

IBM About To Buy Sun For $7 Billion

bedammit Re:mac != unix (699 comments)

This argument is moot. OS X is clearly UNIX based. Clearly. Whether it is like your preferred variant modern or old seems to be the constant argument. Here is Apples UNIX "marketing" http://www.apple.com/macosx/technology/unix.html As for Linux not being certified UNIX 03. UNIX 03 and POSIX standards are used as standards for commercial platforms to simplify compatibility.

Google Bans Tethering App From Android Market

bedammit Im sure the issue is its for ROOTED phones (361 comments)

I doubt it was pulled simply because its a tethering app. Its likely because it promotes people to root their phones. Start screaming when they ban pdanet...

Astronaut Loses Tools While Performing an EVA

bedammit Re:I was just wondering (445 comments)

Maybe, However, if you have a chance to visit one of the Space Museums you should ask if they have a pair of gloves that the astronauts use. Try them on... They aren't as tactile and mobile as you would expect. So if an item unexpected moves your reactions are pretty much tuned to respond to things falling not floating in an unpredictable path based on how it was bumped/etc. Have a look at this link where as I mentioned in my original post. Items in the airlock bag weren't transferred properly. In other words, they weren't all tethered once put into the air lock bag. http://spaceflightnow.com/shuttle/sts126/081119fd6/index2.html

Astronaut Loses Tools While Performing an EVA

bedammit Re:I was just wondering (445 comments)

Having worked at NASA... I'd like to clarify. There are definitely difficulties when items are tethered, to a space suit or a vehicle while in space, however these are details which are resolved. Astronauts use an MMWS (modified mini-workstation tool stowage) caddy. This keeps tools from floating away as well as has tethers. You can see an image of the hooks used here. http://www.nasa.gov/centers/goddard/images/content/122027main_hooks.jpg Additionally, You can see a repair bag here. http://www.nasa.gov/centers/goddard/images/content/122016main_crack_repair_bag.jpg Note the loops and elastic bands. This is how tools are contained in a repair bag. The way the bag was lost was when astronaut Piper was pulling items out of the crew air lock bag. While searching the bag the tool bag (which was in side the larger bag) floated up and out and she lost control of it. It then floated away. I may have been missed when transferring items. In the video the bag lost looks like an MMWS. Which is sorta like a utility belt. Things like this happen... Fault or no fault.. BeDammit
