The Great IT Hiring He-Said / She-Said

beefoot our hiring keywords (574 comments)

I don't remember I've hired anyone screened by HR. HR requires the job description and skill set written down in a way they could digest. When I hire people, I'm less concern about people's skill matching what's on the job description, but more concern about the person's knowledge in general, ability to adapt to changing environment, and whether a fit to the group. I don't know how to write these criteria down in the job description.

I intentionally created really detailed job description/requirements which I don't think HR could find anyone matches the requirements. To my surprise, they found 2 individuals which their skill-sets on their resumes match the requirements.

China To Merge High-Speed Train Makers To Cut Competition

beefoot Re:"Good news for X industry" often bad for consum (88 comments)

I would have thought that the cost of the physical train is likely a small fraction of the fare price consumers pay. It probably wouldn't help consumers that much, if any.

3D-Printed Gun Earns Man Two Years In Japanese Prison

beefoot Re:good (331 comments)

These gun / weapon companies are forward thinking. Real guns could be cheaper and better than 3D printed guns today, it may be a different story a few years from now.

Debian's Systemd Adoption Inspires Threat of Fork

beefoot Re:And this is why Linux will never win the deskto (555 comments)

I think you got a point. The "free" in open source means "freedom" to me. I'm free to choose what works for me. When comes to support, company could choose to support windows or redhat but it is almost impossible to support *my* linux.

3D-Printed Gun Earns Man Two Years In Japanese Prison

beefoot Re:good (331 comments)

We need additional law to prevent people from printing 3d gun because gun companies will lost revenue. Not safety reason. I can also tell you that it is almost cheaper, easier, faster, and more efficient for ISIS to acquire weapons than acquiring these stupid 3D printers.

Apple Will No Longer Unlock Most iPhones, iPads For Police

beefoot remark (504 comments)

I suspect Apple is making this news release because of secret court order asking them to do. It is the same as law enforcement saying imessage is uncrackable. All they (the government) want is for you to voluntary turning over your information thinking that they are secured.

Apple Locks iPhone 6/6+ NFC To Apple Pay Only

beefoot Re:Jailbreak (336 comments)

That reminded me what my wife told me at her company event recently. He said most management uses either iphone or blackberry while most younger staff members use android. Mind you that may be change because of the bigger and badder iphone 6 size. :-)

Ask Slashdot: What Smartwatch Apps Could You See Yourself Using?

beefoot I can see me using iwatch if .... (471 comments)

... iwatch has an iphone app. Seriously, I would like a watch to replace all the mess I carry with me. Anything short of that means I have to carry additional piece of equipment for nothing.

New Usage-Based Insurance Software Can Track Drivers Using Smartphones

beefoot I can't wait (137 comments)

I can't wait to receive discount for being a good driver. By tracking my usage pattern on my phone, insurance companies will be surprised how good am I when I'm behind the wheel. They will all fight to get me as a customer. In turn, I will go out to pay a $25 cheapo phone and tell them that is my main phone. They can track it day and night, the phone will never get used whether I'm behind the wheel or in my house :-) I can't wait.

TechCentral Scams Call Center Scammers

It should read "TechCentral almost got scammed by call center scammers". He had to pull the plug on the wireless router to disconnect the scammer.

New HP Laptop Would Mean Windows at Chromebook Prices

beefoot Re:2 GB of RAM (215 comments)

> Seriously.. my cell phone has 2 GB of ram.... This laptop will be nearly unusable without more memory.

... except your cell phone is $700 while this cheapo laptop is $200. Sure enough you could pay $500 for a laptop with 10GB of ram. You're not comparing apple to apple.

Comcast Confessions

beefoot robot (234 comments)

from the article:
Rep: I’m just trying to figure out here what it is about Comcast service that you’re not liking.
Block: This phone call is actually a really amazing representative example of why I don’t want to stay with Comcast. Can you please cancel our service?
Rep: Okay, but I’m trying to help you.
Block: The way you can help me is by disconnecting my service.
Rep: But how is that helping you? How is that helping you? Explain to me how that is helping you.
Block: Because that’s what I want.
Rep: Okay, so why is that what you want?

This is not human, it is robot.

BlackBerry Back In Profit

beefoot Re:Outside of North America (67 comments)

BB was strong in Indonesia. It is just a matter of time before others catching up with the rest of the world. I believe they may survive if they focus on businesses and governments customers.

BlackBerry Back In Profit

beefoot Re:Blackberry - only vendor serious about security (67 comments)

> Blackberry is the only major vendor serious about security and encryption.

They are serious about security or compression? I think it was latter. Compression was necessary to minimize data usage. Back in the days where GPRS was considered extremely FAST. They needed compression to make communication on their device bearable. I think security was an after thought. Just my opinion.

Having said that, a BB10 is not much different comparing to other smart phones in term of how it is retrieving webpages, emails, etc.

Chinese-Built Cars Are Coming To the US Next Year

beefoot bad vs good quality (431 comments)

The reason why bad quality stuffs are coming out of China is because either consumers demand lower price stuffs or companies demand higher profit. If you want good quality stuffs, you got to pay higher. A vacuum cleaner used to cost me $500. I can't even find one that is more than $150 at wal-mart the last time I checked. Anyone thinks they could get away with selling their cheap quality products at high price quarter after quarter, year after year, they are delusional.
