How Satellite Company Inmarsat Tracked Down MH370

bemenaker Re:Flight recorder (491 comments)

You are making a PRESUMPTION that the transponders were turned off by hand. There is still the possibility of a fire or some other case. This is why recovery of the FDR's is so important. The pilots may not have been on the radio, but the FDR's record everything they say. The conversations between flight crew is crucial, along with all the airplane data.

Supreme Court: AT&T Can Force Arbitration

bemenaker Re:Oohh.. (415 comments)

Judicial Activism simply means "I don't agree with the courts ruling" It's a BS term. The SC make rulings on how they feel a law is supposed to be interpreted, that is their job.

Ask Slashdot: Do I Give IT a Login On Our Dept. Server?

bemenaker As an network administrator (1307 comments)

If you want something to run on the corporate network, and ESPECIALLY if you want a firewall hole opened up, you sure as hell better be giving me access to your server. And I better be able to have full admin rights, even if I'm not going to do anything to it. This is an ABSOLUTE requirement, there is no exceptions here. You would be lucky to get permission to even plug a network cable into this since you didn't go to the IT department about this before you ever started. IT is for the IT people for a damn good reason. Things you haven't taken into account, security (ok, I'll give it that you have thought about this some), HIPPA, Sarbanes-Oxly, several other legal liabilities that fall back upon the IT dept if something gets hacked on that box. All of these have to be taken into account.

Ask Slashdot: Facebook Archiving?

bemenaker WHat HORRIBLE place to store photos (368 comments)

Why would you ever consider that a repository for your photos? It's a place to share them, but that sure as hell is not where you want to store them for keep sake. When you upload photos to FB they are down rez'd. The image quality of them is lost. That reason alone is why you should NEVER consider it a long term store for your records. Read the fine print, it's explained.

Ask Slashdot: Is There a War Against Small Mail Servers?

bemenaker Re:RELAY ALL OUTGOING TO YOUR ISP... (459 comments)

No do not do this. The reverse lookups on the domain name will fail, and they will be blacklisted as a spammer. The CORRECT response is to get the ISP to not block 25.

Ask Slashdot: Is There a War Against Small Mail Servers?

bemenaker Are you sure you're on a business class service? (459 comments)

If you are on a business class service, they should not be blocking smtp traffic. I work at a place that uses business TWC and we send and receive a LARGE volume of email everyday. You need to call their business support and talk to them, it's not the same number as residential.

Motorola Sticks To Guns On Locking Down Android

bemenaker Re:Redundant (600 comments)

Motorola thumping their chest and trying to say you can't do that with our phones. When you can. It just means when a new phone comes out it takes a little longer. It's probably more sucking up to the PhoCo's than it has anything to do with the endusers. I'm sure Motorola really doesn't even care. After all, including efuse increases complexity of design, increases cost of production, creates more points of failure, ect, ect. There is no real reason for them to want that feature, other than Verizon and the likes saying if you don't include it we won't buy it.

Motorola Sticks To Guns On Locking Down Android

bemenaker Re:Is that a challenge? (600 comments)

The Droid X was locked down this way, and guess what, it's rooted. There's numerous ROM's for it. Just means it will take a couple of months from release before it's running root is all.

I agree with you, I don't see what the big deal is. If you are broadcasting your wifi unencrypted, then you have no right to bitch if something get recorded.
