Facebook Tests 'Safe' User Tag For Disasters

ben_kelley Re:What happens when the disaster is over? (62 comments)

I have to say I've not missed getting 20 new photos of my brother's cats posted everyday

You're right. It would be confusing for his page to let you know which cats were safe and which were not. I suspect in this situation it would be clearer to get a fb page for each cat.

You think? I'm torn between wondering if perhaps they have ... friends in high places, or whether it is worth checking for the BRIAA logo on the letterhead anywhere.

Full-Body Scans Rolled Out At All Australian International Airports

ben_kelley Re:Sounds like they won't (329 comments)

Coming up this week on Border Security:

Immigration Officer 1: ... so the passenger has presented at border control, and has refused the normal safety scan.

Immigration Officer 2: Right, so effectively endangering the safety and security of the nation?

Immigration Officer 1: Yes. That's right sir. What should we do with him.

Immigration Officer 2: Normal procedure. Plastic cuffs, scan him, put him on the next plane out.

Immigration Officer 1: Should we tase him first?

Immigration Officer 2: If you like. It has been a quiet morning, hasn't it? Yeah go for it.

Immigration Officer 1: Thankyou sir.

Ask Slashdot: Mirrorless, Interchangeable Lens Camera Advice?

ben_kelley Re:DSLR (402 comments)

the best camera is the one that you have with you

For this reason my backup (non-DSLR) camera is my phone. I have an in-between compact somewhere in a box in the garage, but to be honest, the convenience of having the phone with me at all times wins. If I know I want to take some care with a photo I bring my DSLR.

Software Bug Caused Qantas Airbus A330 To Nose-Dive

ben_kelley Re:... injuring 12 people seriously and causing 39 (603 comments)

In fact the Qantas safety briefing tells you to keep your belt fastened at all times. It seems like good advice to me, although often when I fly I notice people on the flight that don't have their belt on.

Black Friday, for me, means ...

ben_kelley Re:bushfires (198 comments)

"You know honey, I'm not sure our bushfire defences are really up to scratch this year. Just to be safe, I should go out and get a more powerful water pump, and maybe an automated rooftop sprinkler system ... probably better upgrade the controller, which means another spool of cat6 to hook it all up. Anyway, back soon."

Electronic Contact Lens Displays Pixels On the Eye

ben_kelley Torchwood (126 comments)

I don't see why they are bothering with rabbits. Torchwood had model that worked with human eyes years ago!

In addition to being able to display text to the wearer wirelessly, the contact lenses also double as a camera, so that they transmit what the wearer is seeing back to a laptop.

Documented here.

Computing Pioneers Share Their First Tech Memories

ben_kelley Re:Why Gibson? (99 comments)

I bought an Apple IIc and mechanical printer from Eaton's. ... They were marked down for quick sale. ... I was shocked by the very considerable noise the floppy drive (a separate box) made.

Was it marked down because the previous owner had disassembled it possibly?

RAM in my most-used personal computer:

ben_kelley Re:Answers Explained (543 comments)

256+ to 512MB: My main computer is an iPad 2, iPhone 4/4S, or a mid-range android phone

Either that, or you are one of the people who calls me up to ask me why Norton 360 is running so slow on your main computer, and maybe it's time to replace your current main computer with a real computer.

Oxford City Council Mandates CCTV Cameras In Taxies by 2015

ben_kelley Re:Sydney taxis (235 comments)

You need some kind of safety device, which can be a camera, and/or some kind of plastic armour around the driver's seat. I can see why some drivers go for the cameras.
