Apple Outrages Users By Automatically Installing U2's Album On Their Devices

beowulfcluster Re:First world problems. (610 comments)

Having "auto download" turned on has been perfectly fine for non idiots who've managed their library themselves until this unexpected meddling by someone else. Now, of course, the non idiots will have to turn what they might have felt was a useful feature off since we've learnt that Apple will be using it as a promotional tool.

Ask Slashdot: Can an Old Programmer Learn New Tricks?

beowulfcluster Re:what you need them for? (306 comments)

Yes it's far better to reinvent the wheel yourself. After all, you're the only one competent enough to make a decent wheel.

Does Relying On an IDE Make You a Bad Programmer?

beowulfcluster Re:No (627 comments)

In how many real world programming situations rather than college test situations would you be required to write your code down on paper rather than be able to use some sort of IDE? I'm sure you felt great about the test but generally being used to start typing the statement and letting IntelliSense give you a list and filling in the blanks in is not a problem and a more productive way of doing things than the non lazy way.

UK Men Arrested For Anti-Semitic Tweets After Football Game

beowulfcluster Re:Perhaps not (598 comments)

For those who don't know about english football: Tottenham have some sort of jewish connection, not quite sure exactly what at the moment but anyway, and their fans frequently refer to themselves as 'yids'. That's why opposing fans would choose this angle to bait them.

Ask Slashdot: What Are the Hardest Things Programmers Have To Do?

beowulfcluster Re:Making users happy. (473 comments)

I was once asked to move a checkbox from the bottom to the top of a panel so that the user wouldn't have to tab through all the other textfields and things in the panel to get focus to the checkbox. I was then asked to change the focus traversal so that tabbing through the panel skipped the checkbox (yes, really) so they wouldn't have to tab past it every time they wanted focus on the first textfield. These requests came from the same user.

NASA Astronaut Talks "Gravity," Spacewalking, ISS

beowulfcluster Re:Reach the "nearby" ISS? From Hubble? Uh, No. (97 comments)

He wanted to fly the shuttle to the sun.

That sounds like Airplane II: The Sequel. In that case I think it's ok that some scientific realism was sacrificed.

Learning To Code: Are We Having Fun Yet?

beowulfcluster Re:LPMUD! (226 comments)

That's how I learnt. I was also lucky enough to have an admin on the mud that made sure the wizards she was in charge of understood the importance of writing good code and not just nice descriptions for players. It made me interested enough to switch major and when it was time to do the OO stuff in school I'd already groked it. Basically I have Lars Pensjà to thank for my career.

Say What? Wading Through the Nonsense In Microsoft's Re-Org Memo

beowulfcluster Re:It gets worse (165 comments)

Doesn't "We will strive for a single experience for everything in a personâ(TM)s life that matters. One experience, one company, one set of learnings, one set of apps, and one personal library of entertainment, photos and information everywhere. One store for everything. Microsoft has the clear opportunity to offer consumers a unified experience across all aspects of their life, whether the screen is a small wearable, a phone, a tablet, an 85-inch display or other screens and devices we have not yet even imagined." basically translate to "We wish we were Apple :("?

Ask Slashdot: What Planks Would You Want In a Platform of a Political Party?

beowulfcluster Vi yay, Emacs nay. (694 comments)

I'd like to see vi become the official editor of the United States of America, and at the same time I would like to see Emacs declared an illegal tool only people of an evil doer persuasion would use and banned and hunted down. Start the War on Emacs and you'll have my vote. Thank you.

Bill Gates Answers Questions From Redditors

beowulfcluster Re:Handwriting (154 comments)

For me, writing something with a pen is still faster than typing it on a phone keyboard. I also require less muscle control to write with a pen than I do to not throw the phone into a wall after I've hit the wrong letter for the 10th time in a five word sentance.

Employee Outsourced Programming Job To China, Spent Days Websurfing

beowulfcluster Re:Part of me says, "Good!" (457 comments)

If you're only doing it at one place then you might be an idiot, but if as reported with this guy you're doing it at several jobs...? Suddenly you're taking home a lot more than you'd do if you were doing a real job yourself, and you're watching cat videos while doing it. If you have multiple clients who are all satisfied enough with the work your team does that they want to keep hiring you, what more do you need in a manager?

beowulfcluster Re:Spanish (514 comments)

Why on earth would you suggest finnish? It only has about 5 million native speakers, it's pretty tricky compared to english, and any finn in this industry you'll come across will be fluent in english.

For some values of fluent anyway, depending on accent...

Tolkien Estate Sues Over Lord of the Rings Slot Machines

beowulfcluster Re:Doesn't the Tolkien estate... (211 comments)

The family can make slot machines too if they want. The books were written over 55 years ago by a guy who has been dead for 39 years. It should be ok for everyone to do whatever they want with it by now. The actual creator of the work can't profit from it anymore even if you think he still should. If someone thinks these machines or whatever else people come up with are distasteful they they can just not use them.

Ask Slashdot: How To Make a DVD-Rental Store More Relevant?

beowulfcluster Re:Hey Guys (547 comments)

Maybe the DVD store guy can start catering to perverts as well. You just don't get the same thrill when you anonymously download your stuff from the Internet. The disapproving looks and terse conversation from the person behind the counter when you go rent it really add to the overall experience. Or so I've been told.

European Court rejects football fixtures copyright claim

beowulfcluster beowulfcluster writes  |  about 2 years ago

beowulfcluster (603942) writes "Since 1959, the football leagues in the UK have claimed copyright on the fixture lists for the various football divisions. Because of this, newspapers, betting operators and everyone else who wanted to reproduce the lists had to licence the use of them. No more, says the European Court:

"A football fixture list cannot be protected by copyright when its compilation is dictated by rules or constraints which leave no room for creative freedom," said the European judges.

Copyright experts suggest this ruling could impact other areas, such as television listings and have huge financial implications."

Possible judge bias in Pirate Bay trial

beowulfcluster beowulfcluster writes  |  more than 5 years ago

beowulfcluster (603942) writes "Swedish radio reports that there's a possible conflict of interest for the judge in the Pirate Bay trial. Tomas Norström, along with entertainment industry representatives Henrik Pontén, Peter Danowsky and Monique Wadsted, is a member of the Swedish Copyright Association. He's also a member of the Swedish Association for the Protection of Industrial Property, a group advocating stronger copyright law. A retrial has been called for by one of the lawyers representing the Pirate Bay four. The Local sums things up for non swedish speaking readers."
