Ask Slashdot: State of the Art In DIY Security Systems?

bflong Re:Dont fall for the subsidies... (248 comments)

More likely to be bought out, especially if it's been in business for only a few years. There are a lot of these guys that start the business with the sole intention of building up the subscriber base and selling it to the highest bidder. Find a local company, *with its own central station*, that's been in business more then 10 years. Look around for their customers, which you can find by looking for their window stickers. Ask them about their reputation.

There are a lot of whores and trunk slammers in this business, but they're usually easy to spot if you know what to look for.

No reentry. It wasn't falling from space. Put it in orbit next time and see what happens.

Don't they have geographically disperse redundant data centers to avoid an issue like a tornado taking them completely down?

Dell Reveals Specs For the Looking Glass Tablet

bflong Re:Price (174 comments)

Resistive Touchscreen, not quite enough RAM. Videos I found show it not rotating automatically, and performance a bit choppy. Slightly outdated Android 2.1.
So close though.

Is Linux At the End of Its Life Cycle?

bflong Distribution != Linux (676 comments)

More then likely he was confusing a specific distribution with Linux itself. It seems plausable that he meant "[Distro X] is near end of life, so now would be a good time to create our own Distro to replace it, managed by us." I mean, if Linux itself was out of date, then why build your own OS from it? Also, the article mentions Red Hat several times. It seems thats the distro they are using now, which again reinforces my thought that they are talking about a distribution being out of date, not all of Linux.

FCC Approves Changes To Cable Box Rules

bflong Choose? (439 comments)

currently consumers overwhelmingly choose to rent a box from their cable provider
Back when I had cable a couple years ago, there was no choice. If I wanted the deal, I *had* to rent the box. It sat under my sofa for a year, collecting dust and costing me money until I just had enough of it and canceled the service.

Against Apple, Ballmer Floats Microsoft Merger With Adobe

bflong Re:PDF in Office (520 comments)

As far as I know, that is not correct. PDF is an open format, and anyone can write software to create PDF's without needing a licence from Adobe. The reason PDF export isn't built into MS Office is because MS decided not to do it.

bflong 50 employee company (243 comments)

I am the IT department. I have the org chart right here. It looks like this:

           VP------Me
            |
       _Managers___
      |  |    |    |
   Peon  Peon Peon Peon

It works out great, although the VP is cluefull.

Church Turns To Facebook To Find Priests

bflong Re:Their own bible condems them (286 comments)

I couldn't find a Jerusalem Bible online fast enough.

Here it is:
1 The Spirit has explicitly said that during the last times some will desert the faith and pay attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines that come from devils,
2 seduced by the hypocrisy of liars whose consciences are branded as though with a red-hot iron:
3 they forbid marriage and prohibit foods which God created to be accepted with thanksgiving by all who believe and who know the truth.
4 Everything God has created is good, and no food is to be rejected, provided it is received with thanksgiving:
5 the word of God and prayer make it holy.

Here is the New American:
1 Now the Spirit explicitly says that in the last times some will turn away from the faith by paying attention to deceitful spirits and demonic instructions
2 through the hypocrisy of liars with branded consciences.
3 They forbid marriage and require abstinence from foods that God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth.
4 For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected when received with thanksgiving,
5 for it is made holy by the invocation of God in prayer.

Here is the Douay:
1 Now the Spirit manifestly saith, that in the last times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to spirits of error, and doctrines of devils,
2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy, and having their conscience seared,
3 Forbidding to marry, to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving by the faithful, and by them that have known the truth.
4 For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be rejected that is received with thanksgiving:
5 For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.

Benjamin Long (107195) writes "The study, by a team of neuroscientists and engineers, led by Noam Sobel of the University of California, Berkeley, and the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel, blindfolded college students who crawled through grass to sniff out a chocolate-scented trail. They found evidence of a human smelling ability that experts thought was impossible."
