Uber's Android App Caught Reporting Data Back Without Permission

blackfeltfedora Why? (234 comments)

I do not use Uber, but based on everything I have heard on this company's business practices, treatment of it's drivers, threats made to journalist, and now learning that the app is scraping every bit of data possible from people's phones I have to ask "Why are you using this app? Is it really that much better than calling a cab?"

The Era of Saturday Morning Cartoons Is Dead

blackfeltfedora No more appointment TV (320 comments)

Saturday morning cartoons weren't killed by the internet, they were killed by the DVR. My kids only recenlty became aquainted with the concept of "you have to wait for them to show the next episode". Saturday mornings at our house are devoted to binge watching a week's worth of Pokemon, Gravity Falls, and Phineas & Pherb.

Study Finds That Astronauts Are Severely Sleep Deprived

blackfeltfedora Submarines (106 comments)

That sounds a lot like the submarines I served on. It often seemed like I was the only one not popping Tylenol Cold or melatonin to sleep.

Amazon's eBook Math

blackfeltfedora 9.99 (306 comments)

I for one flat refuse to pay more than $9.99 for an ebook and I will never forgive Steve Jobs for causing this mess in the first place.

Amazon Fighting FTC Over In-App Purchases Fine

blackfeltfedora Take Responsibility (137 comments)

Every memember of my family has a Kindle. The Free Time app prevents all in-app purchases regardless of what the App Store settings are. If I let the kids turn off Free Time I still get an email almost instantly when any purchase is made. Amazon has done their due dilligence, if people are still having huge bills racked up by their children they need to look in the mirror for the guilty party.

Can I get Apple to un-couple all the extra crap they jammed into iTunes so I can sync my iPod without my desktop griniding to a halt?

US Nuclear Missile Silos Use Safe, Secure 8" Floppy Disks

blackfeltfedora Re:Reality (481 comments)

I have gotten to experience the transition from legacy to modern computer systems on submarines first hand. Yes new equipment adds all kinds of cool functionality but it breaks a lot more often and the fix usually takes longer than replacing a single card or power supply.

Amazon Turns Off In-App Purchases In iOS Comixology

That is a lot of work to get back at Amazon for not paying Apple's extortion money.

Under Armour/Lockheed Suit Blamed For US Skating Performance

blackfeltfedora Re:Then again, maybe it’s not the suits at a (357 comments)

I'll listen to the guy who designed the Dutch suits: Bert van der Tuuk, the designer of the Dutch Olympic team's suits, said Thursday he had tried a similar ventilation panel on the back of a prototype three years ago, but it slowed his skaters by letting in air and creating drag. "The suit was blowing itself up," he said. http://goo.gl/YaDlg8

How Can Nintendo Recover?

blackfeltfedora Focus on the kids (559 comments)

What Nintendo does better than any other system is make games that pre-teen kids want to play. Mario/Kirby/Pokemon are all powerhouses that Xbox and PS4 do not have; if Nintendo can release a QUALITY game from one of those IPs every 6-8 months they will be fine. Fixing the social aspects and tying everything together through the 3DS would take them from "surviving" to "thriving".

PC Makers Plan Rebellion Against Microsoft At CES

blackfeltfedora Terrible Idea (564 comments)

Microsoft makes Windows 8 more like a tablet interface, everyone hates it, so now PC makers are going to put an actual tablet OS on their desktops? The inmates are officially running the prison. P.S. the little icon that hides everything I used to be able to just click on may work great on my phone but sucks on an actual website. Stop trying to make everything look like Android.

The Dismantling of POTS: Bold Move Or Grave Error?

blackfeltfedora If ATT is for it (582 comments)

I am immediately suspicious. The fact that the chairman "lauded" this proposal makes me think it is a terrible idea before I read any further.

Most Parents Allow Unsupervised Internet Access To Children At Age 8

blackfeltfedora Bad Parent (198 comments)

Both of my children (6 and 8) have their own gmail accounts with every restriction I can find turned on. They do not know the passwords and Chrome is only browser installed on their computer, which lives in the living room. After one of my History checks I did have to discuss some questionable Mario and Princess Peach videos.

Can the Wii U Survive Against the PS4 and Xbox One?

blackfeltfedora Missed the boat (335 comments)

The problem with the Wii U is that Nintendo did not go after a Kinect-like interface. I buy our video-game system for my kids and right now they are happy with the Wii but as the new games migrate to the next generation of consoles we will have to upgrade. From what I have seen Micro$oft One is going to be the choice. My son likes jumping around like an idiot while he is playing games. The online portion of the One looks much more robust than Wii U as well.

Explosions at the Boston Marathon

blackfeltfedora Re:Isn't it sad? (1105 comments)

It is sad, sad that you have become so wrapped up in your own little world that you can't spare a second thought for the eight year old boy who won't see another birthday, or the 100+ people who had ball bearing tear through there bodies. Instead of worrying about how you are going to be inconvenienced by this tragedy how about thinking about the people who finished their 26.2 mile run by running to the hospital.
