How Apple Watch Is Really a Regression In Watchmaking

blogan Huh? (415 comments)

You mean because there's one drawback to the traditional watch it's regression? I guess mobile phones are a regression because I don't have to charge my landline. Oh wait, you mean the added benefits outweigh the drawbacks? Exactly.

Kickstarter Lays Down New Rules For When a Project Fails

blogan Back in the days... (203 comments)

Remember when people use to believe in their ideas enough that they'd put their own house on the line? With some Kickstarters, you see people with "I believe this needs to be done, and I'll do it if people pay enough so that I have zero liability and all of the financial gain."

"Well, there's travel involved, and if I get an early flight, I'll need a coffee from the airport Starbucks. That's an additional $8...."

Google Relying On People Power For 'Helpouts'

blogan Accountability? (57 comments)

OK, so you pay someone $30 for help and they give you a solution that kind of works, but not really. How much hassle do you have to go through to get a refund? There's that sweet price point for scammers of "Not enough to make them care about getting a refund" that's yet to be determined.

More Than 25% of Android Apps Know Too Much About You

blogan Re:If only! (277 comments)

What was the target SDK level? Older levels were always given access to phone ID, but in newer levels, it had to be specifically requested. For backwards compatibility, older apps targeted to the older levels would request that permission. Solution would be to have a newer target level, but not necessarily change the minSDK level.

More Than 25% of Android Apps Know Too Much About You

blogan I wish for optional capabilities (277 comments)

I wish I could use "optional" permissions. If the user doesn't want to give me access to something, that's fine. But if you want to integrate a whiz-bang feature that requires SMS, you either scare off people or have to make a separate app.

Ask Slashdot: Best Use For an Old Smartphone?

blogan Privacy? (301 comments)

Are you unsure if you can completely wipe the phone?

Anyways, put it on craigslist. Or ask around. I'm sure someone will be willing to take them. I use Android devices as scoring devices for quiz meets, so if someone wanted to give me a pile of Android phones, I'd be happy. Or if someone wants to get into development, having a range of phones is always helpful.

Ask Slashdot: Open Source Employee Vacation-Day Tracking Software?

blogan Re:I have an app for that. (108 comments)

That's planned in a future release. It makes the GUI a little more complex, and I want to keep it nice and simple for the single case scenario. Plus I want to handle some of those more odd accrual rules for when you have those multiple types (such as accrues on a yearly basis, no-rollover, etc).

If you wanted to track just two of them for now, you could use the free app and the paid app and have them track separately.

Ask Slashdot: Open Source Employee Vacation-Day Tracking Software?

blogan I have an app for that. (108 comments)

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.logan.bryan.ptotrack

Or if you want to bust the bank and pay $.99 and not have ads - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.logan.bryan.ptotrackpro

It's not Open Source, but if there's something specific you want, let me know and I can think about adding it. Or, if you'd like to purchase the entire source and open source it yourself, I'd be open to discussion.

Apple Gets the Importance of Packaging; Why Doesn't Google?

blogan Stupid video (639 comments)

The one guy uses his collar thing to try and open it? That's the wrong tool, of course it's going to be hard. I think some Apple people like to focus on something they're better at and give it more weight than it demands. I opened my Nexus 7 and had no issue with it. I'll never open it again.

On the other hand, if you thought about being able to load apps that aren't approved by the manufacturer, that's a feature you'll want since it's ongoing.

Amazon Kindle Fire Surfaces

blogan Side-loading (521 comments)

I'm going to wait to see if things can be sideloaded onto this. I have a few custom applications that it would be nice to run without having to publish them in Amazon Appstore. I see rumors, but waiting to see if it's true.
