Here Comes the Panopticon: Insurance Companies

bmxeroh Re:real vs pretend (353 comments)

Pretend nothing. Last year it was a simple, "fill out this questionnaire and enroll in one of these quick online courses and save $30 bucks a month." This year we have to do the same questionnaire, same courses, "oh but also go to your doctor and have a physical and blood work done, and here send this form back with all the results while your at it. Don't like our end run around of HIPPA regs? Enjoy paying $35 extra a month."

Former FCC Head: "We Should Be Ashamed of Ourselves" For State of Broadband

Yeah and the speed test you posted is for Mbps, not Gbps. Huge difference. The comment about 40 Gbps is legit though.

What It's Like To Be the Scientific Consultant For The Big Bang Theory

bmxeroh Re:Not for Nerds (253 comments)

Since your peaked out on score, I'm just going to add a hearty, "amen to that" in regards to television just absolutely catering to the lowest common denominator. If you want a good representative example of just how stupid the average person is, watch "None of the Above" on NatGeo. I was excited when I first saw commercials for it thinking it was going to be a nerdy physics type show, but couldn't make it through the entire first episode as it turns out that it's basically 9th grade science class. I've given up on Discovery Network almost all together. TLC is a joke, THC is moronic 23.5 hours out of the day, and I can't quite wrap my head around what crab fishing has to do with the Discovery Channel. Thankfully some of the extended DN channels have some decent programming for at least an hour or so a day.

Sony and Toyota Bring Real-Life Racing Into the Game World

bmxeroh Tracks (42 comments)

And only available on three tracks in Japan. Certainly not my local circuit, and I would guess not most peoples local circuit here either. The article also mentions that other tracks are able to join, however I'm guessing this in only tracks that are in GT6, or at least could be in some future DLC. Ultimately it is neat, but being such a limited use case really not that exciting.

What if we offered Dice to click the ads for them if we get to keep classic? I'd be ok turning off adblock once a week and clicking through a couple of ads for a few minutes.

Confessions Of an Ex-TSA Agent: Secrets Of the I.O. Room

bmxeroh Re: and the TSA exists because... (393 comments)

Let me know how that works for you. Protip: your tax payments aren't due in April, they're due the day you get paid. For practical reasons, they let you pay them quarterly if they're not withheld by your employer, buts rest assured you'll have penalties to pay if you wait until April.

Extra protip: Don't take tax advice from someone on Slashdot.

Have you not seen any national weather forecasts in the last couple of weeks? It was -15F in Columbus Ohio Monday, with some areas just north of Columbus seeing -20F. Before the wind. We've seen lows at or around 0F all week.

Standardized Laptop Charger Approved By IEC

bmxeroh Re:Standardised DC, eh? (289 comments)

Right, and W = V x I. So if we use 54 usb cables at 2.5 watts each ( or 500ma @ 5v) we get 135 watts, albeit 27 amps @ 5 volts DC. Better have some decent size wire. Also, it was a joke so queue wooshing sound.

You deserve a mod. My first thought was "metro". Also do we really need huge pictures that have nothing to do with the story borrowed from Flikr? Here's a fun exercise, open up Yahoo in one tab, and the new beta in another.

Flash Mobs of Trading Robots Coalescing To Rule Markets

bmxeroh Re: Should be a tax on every transaction (251 comments)

Thanks for the legwork on this. I think at this point, the entire thing is so hugely complex that no one, including the SEC, is fully aware of how it all works. This provides ample opportunity for nefarious yet highly intelligent people to work the system to their advantage. HFT has gotten a lot of heat lately, but I think it's mostly because of some of the recent flash crashes more than anything. Imagine what's happening on a smaller scale that doesn't cause the market to crash when it goes wrong. There are a lot of comments in this story that are defending the entire sector as if anyone that suggests something is awry is some conspiracy theorist nut job, but I feel like there is entirely too much money involved for it not to be infested with leeches and swindlers.

Flash Mobs of Trading Robots Coalescing To Rule Markets

bmxeroh Re: Should be a tax on every transaction (251 comments)

I'm not saying it's bad in any way. It's simple business. I also didn't mean for anyone to take the scenario above as real. I don't understand the inner workings of the current system, and I really doubt anyone fully does, but I was trying to paint a picture of how HFT could be used as sort of an invisible broker to siphon money off of a transaction that they otherwise wouldn't have been involved in, using their superior reaction time as an advantage. It wouldn't really be wrong per se, and in that case no one would really realize they paid more than they should/could have, but it maybe comes off as a little shady to most people.

Stolen Maple Syrup found and returned to strategic reserve

bmxeroh bmxeroh writes  |  about 2 years ago

bmxeroh (1694004) writes "Remember the tragic maple syrup heist? Police have seized more than 600 barrels of maple syrup they say are related to the missing syrup. It was transported back to Quebec via a 16 tractor trailer, heavily guarded (and presumably heavily armed) convoy Wednesday."

Naked Zombie Attack!

bmxeroh bmxeroh writes  |  more than 2 years ago

bmxeroh (1694004) writes "A Miami police officer had to intervene when a naked man was found eating the face off of another man. The officer ordered the man to stop, at which point he growled at the officer and went back to his meal, forcing the officer to take deadly action. Is this the beginning of the zombie apocalypse?"
