Stellar Trio Could Put Einstein's Theory of Gravity To the Test

bob_jordan 'It's almost made to order.'" (106 comments)

Whose to say it wasn't? Maybe some advanced civilisation built it to test just this principal. Maybe we are simply looking over the shoulder of someone else's work. How do they correctly reference that in the eventual paper? :-)

Poor US Infrastructure Threatens the Cloud

bob_jordan Re:NSA aint helping either (177 comments)

Or ....

It's actually a big conspiracy perpetrated by the British government to stop British people emigrating. I get over 120meg down the fibre the cable company kindly laid right to my house. What possible reason would I have for emigrating to Australia or the US if I have to swap my fibre for two cans and a bit of string? :-)

Genetic Convergent Evolution: Stunning Gene Similarities Among Diverse Animals

bob_jordan Re:English (164 comments)

There was a time when French was the standard second language across much of Europe. Finance, law, business, diplomacy were all conducted in French. The aristocracy spoke French. The university students were taught in French.

I'm not trying to say English is better but I would be interested to hear your views on why English took over from French when French had such a lead and "some internal fitness" has nothing to do with it.

Thanks,

Genetic Convergent Evolution: Stunning Gene Similarities Among Diverse Animals

bob_jordan English (164 comments)

It simply proves that through a process of survival of the fittest, English is evolving at the expense of weaker languages into the perfect language. :-)

Eventually all you will have is English, and all the programming languages derived from it.

Solaris Machine Shut Down After 3737 Days of Uptime

bob_jordan I still have fond memories of Sunos! (409 comments)

I remember getting a Sunos box past 2 years of uptime and that was used every day as my personal desktop machine in the 90's. Those 19inch mono screens are great for xterms.

I suspect in a few years, there will be quite a few Raspberry Pi computers buried in hardware projects happily ticking over. I know I will be using some of the camera boards for long term time lapse photography so I hope they last a few years without reboots. :-)

Ask Slashdot: Techie Wedding Invitation Ideas?

bob_jordan Photoshop (399 comments)

For mine, I did each invitation as a mounted photograph. Each photograph had the name of the people being invited photoshopped in. It was done in a way to make it reasonably easy to produce lots of invites but with each looking very individual to that person. Many people commented and apprieciated having a personal invitation rather then a pre-printed card with their name added in biro.

Geeky (photoshop, digital print) but not in a way that confuses the non-techie.

Hope that helps,

Bob.

When is a tablet not a tablet?

bob_jordan bob_jordan writes  |  about a year and a half ago

bob_jordan (39836) writes "Sony have released an all in one 20" touch screen desktop with an interesting feature. It has a battery and can (if your wrists are strong enough) be used as a 20" tablet computer. Albeit a 5kg tablet computer. Will there be much of a market for a 20" tablet PC?"

What exactly is the NRA plan?

bob_jordan bob_jordan writes  |  about a year and a half ago

bob_jordan (39836) writes "As a non-American, the stories I’m reading regarding the NRA stance on gun control are confusing. Are there any Americans willing to help me out on this?

According to the American National Institute for Mental Health (the largest institute for mental health studies in the world), an average US organisation has 20 employees and on average 4 of those employees will go on to develop a new mental health problem after 1 year.

The NRA says that the answer to protecting children from school shootings is to arm teachers.

So as far as I can tell (and please correct me if I am wrong) the idea is that teachers are checked for mental health issues and, assuming they have none, they are armed. At this point children in schools are safe.

However if the American National Institute for Mental Health is to be believed, in a small school with 20 teachers, on average 4 of those teachers will go on to develop a previously undiagnosed mental health issue after 1 year -

- and they are now armed.

Am I missing something?"

Apparently the Xbox is not computer hardware."
