Ask Slashdot: An Open Source PC Music Studio?

bobbomo Re:Ubuntu Studio (299 comments)

I have used Ubuntu Studio 12.04 and 12.10 for about a year. Given I only record and edit 2 channel audio, but I have had no issues with stability or latency. Running other apps and games have not had any issues with the low latency kernel either.

AMD Overhauls Open-Source Linux Driver

The PS3 supposedly ran a modified FreeBSD as well. So between experience and licensing, it does make some sense.

Valve's 'Steam Box' Console Is Real, Says Gabe Newell

bobbomo Re:Microsoft's Biggest Mistake (298 comments)

Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii support USB keyboards. Not for gameplay, but for text input. I believe only PS3 has a few games that support keyboards in-game.

True of the SNES, but the N64 had some games that recommended and others required the expansion RAM pack.

ITC Judge Calls For US Xbox Import Ban

bobbomo Re:H.264 Codec (255 comments)

It is still unclear if h.264 is used on discs, and I already said they need to pay if that's the case. They do include system updates on Microsoft published game discs for the offline systems.

ITC Judge Calls For US Xbox Import Ban

bobbomo H.264 Codec (255 comments)

My understanding is that the Xbox 360 uses Windows Media Audio 10 Professional for all system and game audio.

If the main issue is the H.264 video codec, why can't they just switch to Microsoft WMV/VC-1 or one of the many open source ones available? Sounds like a simple software system update to me if its just the video apps doing it. If H.264 is used on game discs then MS needs to payup.

I don't see the issue either. RHEL does not support a 14 year old product either.

Why Linux Can't 'Sell' On the Desktop

bobbomo Re:All major OSes are pretty well usable (1091 comments)

"- No customizability. For example, I can't figure out how to have the clock on the taskbar also list today's date."

In XP Display Properties, change to Windows XP style. Resize taskbar to double height and Time, Day, and Date are shown.

It's fair considering Apple and Microsoft take 30% of the app cost and Google takes zero.

Microsoft To Bring Cable TV To 360

bobbomo Sony Content on Xbox, not PS3 (133 comments)

One of the free providers is Crackle.com which is like HuluPlus except free and Sony-only movies and television content. Yes, that means we can finally watch Seinfeld since Netflix doesn't stream it! The slap to PS3 owners is that Sony doesn't have this on their own system, haha.

Adobe Releases Flash 11 and AIR 3

bobbomo but does it run on Linux? (174 comments)

Yes. "64-bit support on Linux, Mac OS and Windows ensures a seamless experience with the latest 64-bit browsers." "H.264 hardware decoding is now available for AIR applications on Apple's iOS, while Flash now works with 64-bit on Windows, Mac and Linux and in the browser."

Windows 8 Won't Support Plug-Ins; the End of Flash?

bobbomo C# XNA Silverlight (661 comments)

They will support Xbox Live protocols and apps, so perhaps XNA and Silverlight would be part of the OS and not a plugin!

Public Announcements to XBL & PSN users

bobbomo bobbomo writes  |  about 5 years ago

bobbomo (877614) writes "New York will be testing its emergency broadcast services to game console users. This makes sense sense we spend more time on the console with games and Netflix than watching broadcast TV anymore. Hopefully this is an opt-in or opt-out service."
