Scientists Extract RSA Key From GnuPG Using Sound of CPU
In the article they talk about how engineer the target to select the chosen ciphertext via a crafted email that thunderbird auto-decrypts to display the message preview popup.
Ask Slashdot: On the Job Certification Training?
The last two shops I've been at have tuition reimbursement programs, but they only apply to 2 or 4 year accredited colleges and universities. This leads to a weird situation where they could pay $10500 over 3 years to help pay for a diploma mill MBA but can't approve $3500 to pay for industry coursework from vmware/emc/redhat/etc that actually interests me.
Oracle should stop sneaking Ask.com adware into Java updates
quit being a bunch of dumbasses, but good luck with that.

Microsoft Tried To Buy Netscape: Suppose They Had?
Hotjava It was slow but I used it as a parity check when NS4.x and IE4/IE5 had differences on how they were rendering the pages I was writing back then.
Ask Slashdot: Could We Deal With the End of Time Zones?
Planck Time is the most rational base unit for time in my mind. Set the epoch at some arbitrary value further back than any experimental theorized time for the big bang (more than 15 billion years ago should do the trick) and count planck seconds since this epoch.
Broadcom Releases Source Code For Drivers
I hate having to jump through hoops to install debian on dell hardware.
Five Billionth Device About To Plug Into Internet
Theoretical, for a single piece of HW
Solaris 10 on a Sun Sparc Enterprise T5440, 4 Processors 512GB Ram
256 LDOM's per server
8191 Zones per LDOM
1048448 Total machines in a 4RU enclosure
the machines would be severely IO and disk space bound (Only 4x300GB disks in the box), but it could be done
Anyone know the theoretical numbers for Linux on Z or a fully configured vmware cluster?
[geek] Default security settings in Linux
If you ever do decide to open up ssh, fail2ban's on debian boxes is nice for autoblocking knuckleheads who try ssh pings. The are other profiles you can turn on so it behaves like an IDS/IPS for your machine.
Owning a Hummer just got more "SUX 2 B U"
I was actually going to mention it being the only portal-geared light duty truck for sale in the US, but I forgot about the Unimog.
Registering/operating a Unimog in the US these days might be tricky, will they run on our new low-sulfur diesel?

Oracle To Increase Investment In SPARC and Solaris
On sun's website you can get a stripped down T1000 for $4000 retail, not a desktop/workstation but they aren't super loud either.
Small, High-Resolution LCD Monitors?
This, I love my HP A1295A (rebadged Sony GDM-900) 24" Widescreen tube. I got mine for less than $200 three years ago due to it having a dent in the plastic. I don't know what I'm going to replace it with when the time comes.
Two blogs on my economics
You may be hitting on something here, the right to work states in the south that have seen a manufacturing boom at the expense of the rust belt are served in large part by the Tennessee Valley Authority which has a mix of coal, hydro and fission power generation. Most of the rust belt is coal generation with some fission. It's probably offset by long non-urban commuters with no/limited mass transit in those southern markets.

Just sad what some people run ...
Combination of liking intel this generation and having really good luck with dell over the last 3 years. The base 7% discount I get because of my employer helps as well.

250-300 for a serviceable desktop for anyone but a gamer (no PCI-e x16 slots). My only true beef with them is there isn't a spot for a second HDD inside the cases.
Republicans publicly splitting with theocons ...
The Constitution Party was the U. S. Taxpayers party many moons ago (92) but got over-run by the unholy trinity of theocrats, white supremacists and tax dodgers before 96. A true theocratic party would resemble them fairly closely.
