Generally, yes. But many tropical systems that affect the eastern US start their formation off the coast of Africa and move East to West.

So What If Yahoo's New Dads Get Less Leave Than Moms?

brian1078 Re:Equal rights (832 comments)

Unless you're paying into CA SDI, then you can get 55% of your normal pay for 8 weeks.

Since I work for the state (UC), I don't pay into SDI and had to use vacation/sick time when my kids were born. However, so did my wife (also a UC employee) once her pregnancy disability leave was up.

Professors Rejecting Classroom Technology

brian1078 small sample population? (372 comments)

They only interviewed 42 faculty members for this study? Seems like too small of a sample to come to any kind of conclusion.

Faculty at the large public research university I work at have embraced the technology that has been provided to them.

Disney Wants To Track You With RFID

brian1078 Re:Hang on there (278 comments)

they're really going to have to stretch to come up with good reasons ... and you'll be lucky if you get to ride 6 or 8 rides due to the length of lines.

You gave the reason right there. People with single day tickets would benefit from the ability to reserve/schedule ride times to maximize their time in the park.

brian1078 contract negotiation (209 comments)

What's more, destruction of hard drives means we have to buy new ones, which is going to cost us a lot of money, particular with prices being so high.

It should have been part of the contract negotiations that the cost of the HDDs is paid for by the government. If it wasn't your company should still have padded their fee to include this cost. If it wasn't, someone should be fired. You can then destroy the drives as required by the contract and use the salary savings to pay for new drives.

Not news. I get notifications from the USGS for EQs 6.0+. They've been having 1 or 2 per month since the big one in March. This is the largest since a 7.0 on July 10.
