Scientists Silence Extra Chromosome In Down Syndrome Cells

brouiller Re:bad news (230 comments)

Sounds like this could be used to suppress the Y chromosome and change a female to a male. In other words, the collapse of several Asian countries obsessed with having male children.

Females have XX. Males have XY. You can't suppress the Y chromosome in a female because she doesn't have one.

One Boston Marathon Bomb Suspect Dead, Other At Large After Shootout With Police

brouiller Re:MIT (1109 comments)

I think there's merit to your post, but I substituded 'cop' for 'black guy' and your sounds bigoted to me. It may be important to generalize and stereotype, but take care to recognize it.

Paragraph with the substitutions:
People believe black guys are bad because black guys do so many bad things. They have not taken responsibility as a group and purged their ranks of bad black guys, so people will continue to assume that every black guy is a bad black guy. This is the only rational assumption to make, because many of them are bad people, and they have power over you. Thus, you must be on your guard against bad black guys, and you must assume that any black guy interaction will go wrong.

More Than 25% of Android Apps Know Too Much About You

brouiller Re:DroidWall (277 comments)

So then developers who take the time to develop apps and make their money on ads get nothing for their development work? And you're proud of this?

Indeed. I use NoScript and AdBlock in my browsers too! *gasp*

More Than 25% of Android Apps Know Too Much About You

brouiller DroidWall (277 comments)

I root all of my Android devices and install the DroidWall app. It allows me to block network access to any app regardless of whether you give them permissions when installing. It's allowed me to download and use many apps that I would otherwise not have used because they wanted network access. It even lets you decide if you want to block the app on WiFi, cell data, or both.

Treating Depression With Electrodes Inside the Brain

brouiller Re:A great band-aid solution (237 comments)

Naturally the manufacturers would like the SSRIs to be something you take for the rest of your life, but there is some suggestion that they are best used as an adjunct to cognitive therapy and then tapered after a while.

Would you mind giving a citation for this statement? I'm sincerely interested because this sounds exactly like the situation my friend is in.

RIM Confirms Android Apps Will Run On Playbook, Through Intermediate Players

brouiller This might be awesome... (113 comments)

If Blackberry plays their cards right, this could be the best tablet on the market. You could get Blackberry's reputation for integration and security in a corporate environment, Android's plethora of apps, flash support, and maybe, just maybe Netflix would make a Blackberry native app since it can have DRM. The iPad lacks Flash. Android lacks Netflix. Playbook might be the answer to both of these problems.
