Lectures Aren't Just Boring, They're Ineffective, Too, Study Finds

cain Paying attention and recall is a valuable skill. (166 comments)

Learning to pay attention, take notes, and recall oral information is a skill to be learned and mastered just as much as the content of the lecture.

Gawker Media To Require Commenters' Facebook, Twitter, Or Google Logins

cain Re:Okay... (231 comments)

You don't have to give up anonymity, at least not according to the io9 people (the sci-fi site under the Gawker umbrella). They are encouraging everyone to just create a throw-away twitter account that is only used at io9. Whether this is acceptable to twitter may be another story...

More On Why It Stinks To Work At Zynga

cain Re:Pretty bad when EA seems more appealing (325 comments)

I think the "compensation" referred to in the OP is not overtime pay, but better benefits, higher salaries, bonuses, etc. i.e. if you work 80 hours a week, it'll be worth your while. If the OP did not mean that, then they should've.

No Charges For Child-Whipping Judge Caught On YouTube

cain Re:Not All Spankings Are The Same (948 comments)

I know it is trendy & hip to not spank your children and I disagree with that -- I do spank my children on occasion and I can usually tell - from the behavior of other kids in their classes - which parents don't

Confirmation bias.

Facebook Cookies Track Users Even After Logging Out

cain Re:FFS it's not that hard (352 comments)

If you block facebook.com and fbcdn.com, then you cannot use Facebook. Using these plugins or smart adblocking filters, you can still use Facebook, but stop Facebook from tracking you on non-Facebook pages.

Facebook Cookies Track Users Even After Logging Out

cain Re:FFS it's not that hard (352 comments)

Even better: update your adblock plus lists to include the URL

https://adversity.googlecode.com/hg/Antisocial.txt

This list will block (or attempt to block) all third-party "Social" sites' widgets on pages not owned by the parties themselves. To install, find the add new subscription field fo AdBlock plus and paste in the URL above. Details for Chrome (but work for AdBlock plus in any browser) here:

Facebook Cookies Track Users Even After Logging Out

cain Re:FFS it's not that hard (352 comments)

If you use ad-block add the following rule to get rid of Facebook widgets on non-Facebook sites:

||*.facebook.*^$domain=~facebook.com|~0.0.0.0

This can be done for any annoying thrid-party site:

||*.twitter.*^$domain=~twitter.com|~0.0.0.0

&c.

I did this with a few (very) fast pigeons and lots of bird seed. I just ran a cron'd rsync over the RFC 1149 protocol.

Wikileaks Reveals BitTorrent Lawsuit Background

cain MPAA and bad PR (209 comments)

.'' Oops. Looks like there's a little bit of egg on the movie studios' faces!"

The movie studios do not care that the MPAA looks like goons and everyone hates them. That's what the MPAA was created to do and that's why the studio keep them funded: they take all the bad PR on behalf of the studios. They are a front to take the bad PR.

Google+ Registers 25 Million Visitors

cain Re:Only to take my prefered IDs (213 comments)

I'm going to get sucked in eventually anyway (other people posting photos of me, etc). Might as well stake my claim so I can better control it once it happens. Best offense is a good defense, &c.

Google+ Registers 25 Million Visitors

cain Only to take my prefered IDs (213 comments)

I don't plan on using it, but I registered a few accounts preemptively. I've got a few people in the world with the same name and when other search for it, I don't want them confusing the other person with me. I can use the Google+ accounts to link to my preferred on-line presence.

NYC Resistor: DIY Hackers Doing Awesome Things

cain Re:Labels and Pop Culture (134 comments)

So they should bill themselves as a place where "regular people" meet? I don't know that anyone would show up. If you're looking for like-minded people, regardless of area, you have to search/find/look for some noun - might as well make it a fun one.

You may have missed the phrase in the write-up that makes highlights the difference between your father's garage and this place: "...crawling with a diverse crowd..." This is where people who build stuff can meet and talk about building stuff.
