They DO.

This would still not prevent people from uploading the file again if they really want to, but they would have to modify it in some way (for example package it into a new zip file) which is a lot more work than just uploading it unchanged.

That is not what a preservative does. Formaldehyde is a very effective preservative but that does not make it safe for human consumption.

Preservatives are chemical stabilizers and/or toxins intended to prevent biological activity. To preserve things intended to go in the human body, you have to use a preservative that is non-toxic to humans in that concentration, and that doesn’t build up gradually to toxic levels.

E.g. salt is toxic in high concentrations but is safely used as a preservative. Suppose a 28 gram portion of cooked sausage contains 183 mg sodium; that is a concentration of over 6,500 PPM. However it is perfectly safe when it dilutes in the human body, and since salt is extremely water-soluble it normally flushes out of the human body long before it could build up to a toxic level.

Regardless of whether or not it affects the body in the same way as elemental mercury, thiomersal is rated at the maximum toxicity health levels by the USA (Highly Toxic), EU (Very Toxic), and NFPA (blue 3 for health) ratings, and has a cumulative effect.

I haven’t, and I can’t think of anyone I know who has had them. I did have the chicken pox, but that’s mild enough that they don’t vaccinate against it.

Unless you’re trying to say that anyone who was vaccinated for measles has “had measles”, which is ridiculous.

It will be interesting to see how this one plays out in the courts. Undoubtedly I expect the Jackson family will try to paint this as a copyright issue, and they might actually have a case to make: Buying a copy of a song does not give you a claim to owning the song, rather it gives you a license to play it – and even this license has certain restrictions with regards to public performances, etc. It will be up to the courts to decide this one: Is buying the master to a song different because it is the only copy known to exist?"

GOP Wins Two Races, Dem Defeats Conservative in NY

In New Jersey, Republican candidate Chris Christie defeated the incumbent Gov. Jon Corzine by a 49:45% margin:

Republican Chris Christie, a former federal prosecutor, pulled out a win in the New Jersey governor's race Tuesday, defeating a deeply unpopular Democratic incumbent whom voters blamed for the state's high taxes and crushing budget woes.

The Associated Press called the race for Mr. Christie over incumbent Gov. Jon Corzine just after 10 p.m. With 91% of precincts reporting Tuesday night, Mr. Christie had 49% of the vote to Mr. Corzine's 45%.

In Virginia, the referendum was even more pronounced:

Former Attorney General Robert F. "Bob" McDonnell, a calm, hard-line conservative Republican from Virginia Beach, clobbered his earnest but vaguely moderate Democratic opponent from Bath County, state Sen. R. Creigh Deeds, by 18 percentage points.

Finally, NY Times editorialist David Carr expressed surprise over the close mayoral race in NYC:

Both polls and pundits had Michael Bloomberg walking away with the New York City mayoralty, but he won only by a margin of five points, and the race was close enough so that media outlets were finessing their predictions deep into the night. It will take weeks to figure out how a two-term incumbent who spent $90 million on his re-election, overpowering his opponent by a 14-1 margin in spending, limped to a narrow victory.

After all of this, we have to ask: What does this mean for the Obama administration? Was this a warning of things to come in the upcoming mid-term elections, and if so, how should the Democrat party react?"

New Law Bans Flavored Cigarettes

The law, enacted this summer and kicking in today, directs the FDA to crack down on candy and fruit-flavored cigarettes that public health officials say turn children into life-long nicotine addicts.

"These flavored cigarettes are a gateway for many children and young adults to become regular smokers," FDA Commissioner Dr. Margaret Hamburg told reporters.

Dr. Lawrence Deyton, head of the FDA's new Center for Tobacco Products, said they are favored by teens.

"Studies show that 17-year-old smokers are three times as likely to use flavored cigarettes as smokers over the age of 25," Deyton said.

Tobacco companies sweeten their cigarettes because "flavors make cigarettes and other tobacco products more appealing to youth," he added.

Deyton read what he called "a historic memo" from one tobacco manufacturer, outlining plans to directly target children by making "a cigarette that's obviously youth-oriented" and by featuring "flavor which would be candy-like but give the satisfaction of a cigarette."

As for flavorings, the law specifically exempted the most popular one – menthol. But the agency is studying ways to close that loophole – and to regulate flavorings in cigars, chewing tobacco and snuff.

110 MPG? Ohio Engineer Says This and More

clone53421 (1310749) writes "Doug Pelmear, a mechanic from Napoleon OH, claims to have created an engine that gives his '87 Mustang a whopping 110 MPG, and he claims the technology can be extended to smaller engines to allow even better mileage.

Even aside from the gas mileage his claims seem spectacular: his car goes 0-60 in three seconds and tops out around 180 MPH. That's enough to make the average car fanatic blink, but these claims seem to be true... the car was tested by Rocket Ventures, a company dedicated to promoting hi-tech, high-paying jobs in northwestern Ohio.

Pelmear may be keeping the design under wraps for now, but the benefits to the automotive industry are obvious. He said, "This'll bring back the automotive industry when they can sell trucks and SUVs and the models that are almost dead at this time". It's also pretty obvious that Pelmear stands to make a lot of money if this is viable.

The only thing that remains to be said is, "When can I get one of those?!""

80x86 command-line utility... similar to MORE/PAUSE

This utility echoes all its piped input, then it displays "Press any key to continue. . ." and waits for a keypress.

Why did I write it? Well, I wanted it. Plus, it was a good chance to figure out some stuff that had been bugging me about piped input in DOS. First of all, I detect whether the input was redirected (and jump directly to the exit if it wasn't). Next, I discovered that I needed to enter an idle loop to wait for the input to be ready. Finally, I was unable to find any method of properly detecting an EOF on the input stream, but on a hunch I assumed that the input stream would be full and as soon as the read failed I was done. I don't know if it's "right", but it appears to work. (Note: empty input streams will cause it to hang, e.g. del *.* /q | wait. I don't know how to fix this.)

Copy, paste into Notepad, save as "wait_asm.bat", and execute. It will create an executable, wait.com, which can be used like this:

...which will display the directory listing followed by "Press any key to continue. . .", and will exit after a key is pressed.

If you want to be able to use the wait utility like any other DOS command (from any directory), move it into the C:\Windows\system32\ folder (where the rest of the DOS command-line utilities are located).

Decodes standard MIME-encoded base64 data. (Non-printable characters won't be visible, but they are echoed. E.g. the bell character, 07, should cause the terminal to beep.)

Every 4 characters typed will be decoded to the corresponding 3 characters. (Nothing will be echoed until 4 input characters have been typed.) Any input characters outside the base64 character table will be ignored and will not count toward the 4-character sequence.

The = character is a special character in base64 encoding: it is only used to pad the end of base64-encoded data when encoding the last 1 or 2 bytes (instead of the 3 bytes needed to have a full 24-bit chunk). Although the base64 encoding standard does not allow = symbols in the middle of base64-encoded output, the code does not attempt to verify this. The = symbol is treated as if it was an A (index 0) and it adjusts the number of output characters that are printed: If the 4-character sequence contains one = symbol, only the high 16 bits will be printed (2 characters). If it contains two = symbols, only the high 8 bits will be printed (1 character). Although sequences containing more than two = characters are not permitted according to the base64-encoding standard, the code will still treat them like A's (index 0) and print only the high 8 bits.

So, this is your standard MIME base64 encoding process. It takes 3 bytes of data, packs them into a 24-bit value, splits it into 6-bit chunks, and uses them as indexes into a 64-character table. Once you type three letters, it gives you the four-character representation (nothing is echoed until the full 3 characters are typed).

The lines are wrapped at 76 characters per the MIME spec, and if the input terminates with one or two extra bytes (i.e. not an even multiple of 3 bytes) the 24-bit field is zero-padded at the end. In this case the last 1 or 2 characters of the four-character representation are replaced with = (instead of A) to avoid having extra NULL bytes at the end of the data after decoding.

For example, the string "Hello World" (without quotes), which has three sets of three characters with two characters left over, is encoded as: SGVsbG8gV29ybGQ=

Lagged Fibonacci Generator (80x86)

This program implements a lagged Fibonacci generator with constants j=7, k=10. A linear congruential generator is used to seed the list of initial values; the system timer is used to seed the LCG.

Initially I included a routine to print each random number so I could redirect the output into a .csv file and plot the points in Excel, but I've taken that code out. Now, the program instead switches to display mode 12 (640x480x16 graphics mode) and plots "snow" on the screen in random locations and colours. Pressing any key ends the program.

Like the other ones, paste this in Notepad and save it as a .bat file. Run it and it does the rest.

Copy and paste into the address bar (IE or FF tested). Copy the prompted value and paste it into Notepad; that's the source code*. Save as polyglot.[com|htm] (ANSI encoding) and run. Note: the 80x86 implementation doesn't wait around, so run it from the command prompt or the window will disappear before you see the output.

*Because /. doesn't like the strange characters, I can't post the source code directly. However, once you've saved it as .htm in Notepad as described above – Unicode weirdness notwithstanding – opening it with a browser, viewing the source, copying and pasting into Notepad, and saving as .com should yield an identical copy of the program.

Note: The String() value is the actual data that the 80x86 code displays. As a result, you can easily change it to whatever pleases you. (Leave the $ at the end; it's the delimiter for the interrupt that prints the string. Consequentially, you can't print a string containing a $ character.) However, the beginning of the string is hard-coded, so you won't be able to change the HTML before it (for example to add a <title> value)... actually, try it and see what happens (don't make the HTML shorter though...).

Assembly: Copy and paste into Notepad. Save as "bin2asc-asm.bat" (include the quotes to force the extension). Run the batch file in Windows by double-clicking or by executing it from the command prompt. On its first run, the batch file will run debug.exe and assemble the bin2asc.com executable in the current directory. After assembling the executable the batch will launch it. (Subsequently you can launch the executable without need for the batch file.)

Use: Type or paste (using the sys menu on the command prompt window) binary into the DOS window. All characters other than '1', '0', Esc, and ^Z will be ignored (this allows the program to be forgiving of spaces or newline characters in the binary). Assembly: Copy and paste into Notepad. Save as "asc2bin-asm.bat" (include the quotes to force the extension). Run the batch file in Windows by double-clicking or by executing it from the command prompt. On its first run, the batch file will run debug.exe and assemble the asc2bin.com executable in the current directory. After assembling the executable the batch will launch it. (Subsequently you can launch the executable without need for the batch file.)

Use: Type or paste (using the sys menu on the command prompt window) into the DOS window. Use the sys menu to copy the output. Esc or ^Z exit.
