Ask Slashdot: Which Virtual Machine Software For a Beginner?

collinc VirtualBox is a good place to start. (361 comments)

I'd definitely stick to VirtualBox or VMware if you're going to be running your VM's on a Windows PC. If you're looking to try the complete VM experience for a work environment then try in the 'bare metal' category. We use Citrix XenServer which is pretty nice and has a free license that can be perpetually renewed. Only downside (if you consider this a downside) is that you can't over commit the server resources without purchasing some spendy upgrades. For something like that (ie you wanna resell server space through VM's) you'd want a Xen or KVM setup and run something like SolusVM to administer your host machine. At home on my Windows PC I stick with VirtualBox. It doesn't have a lot of advanced features, but it can install from ISO images and runs rather well for standard operating systems like Windows and Linux. I had a harder time getting some of the pre-made VHD's to boot properly with it. So if you stick with like a debian network install cd you'd be good. /ramble

Apple, RIM, Google All Bid On Palm

collinc Re:It seems to me (117 comments)

Frankly, I'm surprised more people haven't put in bids yet. The Palm brand has been around for what amounts as forever in the industry. Their platform is sound. Heck their brand name alone is worth spending money on acquiring, to say nothing about their patent portfolio.

Blizzard Asserts Rights Over Independent Add-Ons

collinc Re:Open Platform (344 comments)

No I'd say they opened up a platform for people that want to give their well performing code to the masses, and they would love everyone to continue to do so.

Go ahead and ask for donations, but please keep these requests to your website. Our platform isn't here to be your advertising venue.

Go ahead and make add ons that do anything you want, as long as it is within the confines of our own licensing. Also, please keep the code readable to human eyes so we can make sure it's not behaving badly and negatively impacting our end users game performance.

I thought it said asking for donations wasn't allowed, but can't you still just say something like "XXX add on is developed full time by XXX person. Please visit our website if you think this is an add on that should continue to be developed in the future."
