Should I Take Toyota's Software Update?

compass46 Re:You're looking at it wrong. (750 comments)

You could throw the car into neutral with an automatic in Toyotas with these problems. People during these incidents did not think of that though. I guess things get a little iffy if the automatic shifting was all electronic though I don't think it is.

And? I've heard the same stories regarding hospitals in the US.

Freescale Unveils Design For $199 Tablet

Sweet, I've been mostly looking for a glorified PDF reader and toy to hack around with. The Touchbook looks pretty versatile as something to hack around with.

The Last GM Big-Block V-8 Rolls Off the Line

compass46 Re:V-8's rock (525 comments)

The leaks regarding the 2011 Mustang GT's (the V8 model) engine specs have the previous 315hp engine being replaced with a 412hp engine. It'll still get about 24mpg highway though. On the other hand, the V6's 210hp engine is being replaced by a 305hp model 2011. And get this, going from 16/24mpg to 19/30mpg. (Those numbers reflect the automatic transmision model.)

As for GM, it was the reintroduced 2010 Camaro, especially the V6 model which currently has comparable numbers to the upcoming Mustang V6, that really spurred Ford on.

OpenSolaris Or FreeBSD?

compass46 Re:Why pick just one? (405 comments)

Not the OP but sometimes people just get tired out. I still have my commit bit active but I make few commits these days. Life has changed for me. I no longer maintain what I used to due to burn out and haven't found a replacement area to really dive into. Couple the lack of focus I have with changes in life and work and my output has significantly dropped. Been hoping to get back involved and hopefully will a bit soon.

Participation is open source projects is just like a regular workplace. Some people stay longer than others for a variety of reasons.

Why the FBI Director Doesn't Bank Online

compass46 Re:After reciving an e-mail that appeared... (360 comments)

No he can't because the specific point does not exist. The text someone would mostly likely cite (a few page somewhere in the 50s IIRC the last time I checked one of the house bills) is about healthcare provider to insurance provider payment transactions.

FreeBSD 8.0 vs. Ubuntu 9.10 Benchmarks

compass46 Re:What's the point. (268 comments)

I don't believe commenting out a bunch of device drivers from GENERIC for hardware that is not even in the box will have much of an overall effect really. Yes, there are a handful of other options in GENERIC but how many of those do ppl actually comment out and how much of an effect is there really?

Leaving the GPL Behind

compass46 Re:This isn't sensationalist, it's the truth (543 comments)

"That's certainly true, but if the code was provided by the original developer under the BSD licence then you would be free to re-licence it under the GPL"

You cannot relicense someone else's code. You can freely incorporate additions that are GPL licensed but the original code is still licensed under the original BSD license.

Pandora Stabilizes, No Longer Completely Free

compass46 Re:Ads & paid use (268 comments)

* Skip All Day Long: With the standard ad supported version of Pandora you're limited to 12 total skips per day. With Pandora One you'll be able to skip as many times per day as you'd like (note you will still be limited, thanks to licensing constraints, to six skips per hour).

I rarely skip when something sucks... I just switch stations.

No, the thing that looks like a glass Christmas ornament is our official logo. I was there when we voted on it.

Benchmarks For Ubuntu vs. OpenSolaris vs. FreeBSD

compass46 Re:Right. (131 comments)

Except that they tested FreeBSD 7.1 beta 2. FreeBSD betas are compiled with extra debugging and checking code which slows the end result down a lot. This includes the WITNESS kernel flags and the malloc checking.

This is only true in HEAD which will eventually be FreeBSD 8.x. They are turned off in the FreeBSD 7.x branch (RELENG_7)

Stallman Unsure Whether Firefox Is Truly Free

compass46 Re:I Just Took A Huge Shit (905 comments)

But what if somebody takes your BSD licensed code and puts it under the GPL (they CAN do that your license allows it)?

You cannot relicense someone else's code. Not even BSD licensed code. Even more than the simple fact that you cannot relicense someone else's work see the part about retaining the copyright and license.

You can however integrate BSD licensed work with GPL licensed work. What you derive from that integration may be released under the GPL but the original BSD licensed work still retains its BSD license.
