FAA Scans the Internet For Drone Users; Sends Cease and Desist Letters

coolmanxx Behold the magic of the internet (222 comments)

Remember now, the internet was a military project. The power of the state to influence and track its citizenry is the most powerful feature of the internet.

Transhumanist Children's Book Argues, "Death Is Wrong"

coolmanxx LOL what? (334 comments)

We are building airplanes out of composite materials that didn't even exist a few decades ago! Innovation is accelerating, not slowing down, or halting. Life extension? If you are around 30 years old today, your odds off living past 90 are virtually assured. Open your eyes, stop reading doomer books.

Transhumanist Children's Book Argues, "Death Is Wrong"

coolmanxx quite short sighted (334 comments)

We humans have evolved to the point where we control our own evolution. From genetic manipulation to GMO food - we are modifying our own environment, and our bodies to suit us. 'Natural' evolution on the scale of eons is no longer relevant to human civilization. Therefore, life extension is just another avenue for innovation that will make us more suited and successful in our environment, whether it be terrestrial, or off world. We have already doubled the average human life-span in the space of under a century, due to human ingenuity such as the discovery of anti-biotic, among many other innovations. The future looks bright to life extension.

NASA-Funded Study Investigates Collapse of Industrial Civilization

coolmanxx Re:Counting on Surplus (401 comments)

You're a nutter. The US is experiencing an ENERGY revolution, the US will be self-sufficient in energy, and even an exporter. Together, with Canada, the US has over 20% of the Earth's fresh water supply. The US also has some of the most fertile, extensive, and developed agricultural land. Even the demographics of the US are healthy, with steady growth. The US is by far the most innovative country on the planet. The USD is the reserve currency of the Earth, accounting for over 60% of all transactions for a reason - such as being the SOLE super-power --- or should I say hyper-power. It's easy to descend into hyperbole when trying to quantify just how GOOD the US (along with her closest allies) have it. The future looks bright indeed. --- doomers are missing out.

Facebook Wants Drones To Connect the Developing World

coolmanxx This will be a no go for most developing countries (48 comments)

Most developing countries have communications monopolies. ie. State Owned. One reason is control, the other reason is profit. In many African countries for example, VSATS have huge tariffs levied to discourage their use by local governments. These initiatives will not see wide use. Can you imagine FB trying to get away with this in Rural India or China? There would be war!

I'm a post grad with many a cirtificate and degree. The secret of happiness and contentment are within reach to any man, be they slow wit or quick to action.

Out, out, brief candle! Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player That struts and frets his hour upon the state And then is heard no more. It is a tale Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, Signifying nothing.

My good friends Jonnie and Hennessy concur. No man fears death when he has seen the light and ingested the nector of the gods! To life! Death is but the ultimate adventure!

Moscow Has Eyes On WikiLeaks, Too

coolmanxx Re:MILITARY INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX (579 comments)

You would like to believe that the brightest military minds in the world were duped into invading Iraq?

Truly you are naive.

It sounds cliche but you really need to 'follow the money'.

I'm a contractor and though I don't work in Iraq or Afghanistan I have friends who have for many years. Their companies have made hundreds of millions (some have made billions), while they themselves have become minor millionaires. There is no accountability. The world is a small place, and DC is even smaller. If you know the right people you can get anything you want. No bid contracts anyone? The latest wikileaks confirm that Afghanistan is indeed a cesspool of corruption, though anyone who has been there knows that perfectly well.

No... the sad reality is that Iraq was invaded on the behest of a handful of very determined (and cynical) cabal of civil servants (all of which have ties to the arms industry I might add) who made the conscious decision that PAX AMERICA was worth the sacrafice. Control over the PRIZE of Iraq, the second largest oil producer on the planet was worth ANY price. Truth be damned.

coolmanxx MILITARY INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX (579 comments)

Huh? The US military spends twice as much as their nearest rival.

The majority of your elected leaders are MILLIONAIRES who derive much of their support from the largest corporations in the world.

Iraq was based on a lie, and Afghanistan is quagmire.

The conspiracy is simply that powerful people in powerful positions (in turn supported by powerful corporations) are acting in their own self interest, and not that of the common citizen.

Do you want to die for that? Perpetuating a lie?

coolmanxx Truth? Let me tell you about TRUTH (579 comments)

Assange, we live in a world that has walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with guns. Who's gonna do it? You? I have a greater responsibility than you could possibly fathom. You weep for the Constitution, and you curse the World Superpowers. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know. That the lies upon lies, while tragic, probably saved lives. And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves lives. You don't want the truth because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that wall, you need me on that wall. We use words like terrorist, rendition, homeland security. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said thank you, and went on your way, Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a weapon, and stand a post. Either way, I don't give a damn what you think you are entitled to.

Sahara Solar To Power Half the World By 2050

coolmanxx It could go a long way (363 comments)

The biggest problem in most African countries (particularly subsaharan) is unemployment. Many African countries have nearly 50% unemployment! Why is this?

Firstly, there are no jobs. There are no jobs because there is little foreign investment in industry. There is little foreign investment in industry because of rampant corruption to the highest levels, thereby creating great instability.

Africa is ofcourse resource rich, so the easiest way to make money there is to extract the raw materials and get it the hell out as quick as possible.

Now, if one were to invest billions in infustructure, that creates jobs. Jobs allow families to fund the education of their children. A better educated populace is able to better take care of themselves and hopefully usher in a better generation of civil leaders.

Providing cheap reliable electricity is also a key component to development. One would hope that some of the power generation from these arrays would help the local populace.

Change like this takes decades, but it happening. Africa is more stable and peaceful now that it has ever been. Considering how far they yet have to go, its quite an acheivement.
