cvos Re:Campaign season already? (169 comments)

Albany (ny state capital) is not very far from Armonk (IBM HQ). IBM would love to have more of the high end server market.

Microsoft Releases Prototype of Research OS "Barrelfish"

cvos Re:Slashcode is Farked... (366 comments)

I was scrolling down just for fun to see when comments would relate to TFA. It looks like we're at ~50.

It seems slashdot is about as efficient and on topic as a group of government workers. It's much more fun to bash large computer companies' code than discuss mundane state civil code.

Is City-Wide Wi-Fi a Dead Idea?

cvos Re:Wifi B/G can't cut it. (259 comments)

We had a "free" wifi rollout in our small community of Hermosa Beach but it has stalled recently. The mayor announced the plan with great fanfare and lots of controversy 4 years ago. It has been a long, slow and painful process and only covers about 20% of city residents. Supposedly the ~ $150k costs would be paid with advertising - the location and specifics of this advertising were never clearly documented.

Limited and unreliable access is only available in the main business district. This project has garnered the city a lot of publicity, and with a bit more support and leadership it could still be a success someday http://wifihermosabeach.com/access.php

Project OXCART Declassified From Area 51

cvos Re:The A-12 is better known as the SR-71 (208 comments)

This video about the secret history of silicon valley explains some of the technology behind electronic warfare, radar imaging, and secret air force planes. The content relevant to this article appears around the 30min mark.

E.T. believers will find nothing interesting, however military computer geeks will find it orgasmic.

Antarctic Ice Bridge Finally Breaks Off

cvos Re:Whew, no problem then (505 comments)

It predicted more and bigger hurricanes; that hasn't happened.

Please share your good news with New Orleans, Houston and Southern Florida and tell them it's always a safe place to live.

Website Optimization

cvos Re:advice on marketing ... from spammers? (71 comments)

Is slashdot now selling reviews? This seems like a paid piece with gratuitous anchor text heavy links back to the author.

Nothing wrong with this, but disclosure would be nice.

Obama Staff Shocked at Obsolete Whitehouse Computers

cvos cvos writes  |  more than 5 years ago White House stuck in "technological dark ages"

Apparently computers and digital communication were not high priorities for the previous administration.

Obama's team arrived at the White House Tuesday to find only a handful of laptops, old PCs running outdated software, disconnected phone lines, and a series of rules and regulations that essentially forbid anything resembling Gmail, Twitter, Facebook, or AIM. "It is kind of like going from an Xbox to an Atari," Obama spokesman Bill Burton said of his new digs.

Apple Tablet Not Made by Apple

cvos cvos writes  |  more than 7 years ago A new tablet is coming out, but its not made by apple. Instead OWC is hacking a 13" macbook and fusing it with a wacom tablet Mary Shelly style.

Unlike Frankenstein however, this fusion of macbook and stylus looks very slick.

Get yours in April for only $2200, unless Apple Inc. sues the product off the shelves. appleinsider
