Mystery Malware Affecting Linux/Apache Web Servers

cybaea Re:ssh + bad password (437 comments)

was most surprised when I found that Redhat ... appears to allow [root to ssh into your machine] as the default.

Useful when you are setting up a brand new (remote) server. You are supposed to use the access only once to (a) create a new account and (b) disable root ssh access (by setting 'PermitRootLogin no' in /etc/sshd/sshd_config).

cybaea (79975) writes "In a sign that biometrics are becoming a mandatory part of everyday life, the BBC is reporting that in order to rent a car at London's Stansted airport, you now have to give a fingerprint. The fingerprints are stored by the hire firms — and will be handed over to the police if the car is stolen or used for another crime. Europecar, one of the participating firms, says that it will be rolled out to other locations if the pilot scheme is "successful". It is not clear if there is any civil or criminal liability if your biometrics are leaked or stolen."

Editing on Syndic8 is for everybody. I recommend that you open an account and start helping out.

Today's find (before the Syndic8 servers froze up - sigh!) was You Know, They Say: cool log, cool pictures. Go look.

OK, so I wrote a small web log for experimenting, and now I'm experimenting here as well. Is the /. journal system cool?
