Author Charles Stross: Is Amazon a Malignant Monopoly, Or Just Plain Evil?

dataspel Re:Read his books (405 comments)

The comparison to Wal-Mart is particularly apt.

A better comparison is the Sears catalog, for those who remember it.

FBI Need Potheads To Fight Cybercrime

dataspel Re:Let me know when you win that war on drugs? (319 comments)

This will probably come as a surprise to many, but a lot of cops in Texas (at least in Houston and Dallas) don't care about a little pot.

Don't try this in Williamson county.

The Internet's Broken. Who's Going To Invent a New One?

dataspel Re:How is it broken, exactly? (162 comments)

Because I lost my account password, and I can't recover it, and I don't feel like being someone else.

Did you try "password", "123456", and "letmein" ?

Ask Slashdot: Beginner To Intermediate Programming Projects?

dataspel Write a trivial web server (172 comments)

Its very handy to have a lightweight web server running on your machine that you control completely. You will immediately start learning about sockets, TCP-IP, and HTTP. You can set up a home page with useful information [e.g. how many cats do I own and what are their names]. Plus if you ever open a port on your router, you will quickly learn lots and lots about why security is important.

Ask Slashdot: Beginner To Intermediate Programming Projects?

dataspel Re:Good game to try (172 comments)

I wrote an implementation in C when the Sciam article was first published. Of course, Stomper (a one line program that copies itself to the next higher address) was pretty much unstoppable, until I introduced the ability to capture enemy processes and repurpose them for programs on the allied side. Lots of fun, but I could never get anyone to try it after I explained the game. I think they were afraid of a process "escaping" and overwriting their machine :)

Ask Slashdot: Fastest, Cheapest Path To a Bachelor's Degree?

dataspel Re:Check out WGU (370 comments)

The only thing that concerns me about WGU is whether it is generally accepted
by employers as a substitute for attendance at a class-based school. That is, given
2 equally qualified candidates, one from WGU and one from an average state school,
would the state school graduate have preference in being hired?

Austin Has Highest Salaries For Tech Workers, After Factoring In Cost of Living

dataspel Re: really (285 comments)

the traffic is getting insane

a motorcycle might solve that :) weather certainly permits it as a year-long solution

Would be nice if that were true. What often happens is you end up waiting in gridlock like everyone else,
and lane splitting is not allowed. Your bike better be liquid cooled, especially in the summer.

Can Science Ever Be "Settled?"

dataspel Re: i interpret it to mean (497 comments)

If you're a scientist doing actual Science today, then Laws exist. In fact, plenty of Laws exist. Plenty of Settled Science exists. There's always room for improvement, and plenty of things we don't know, but the new things we learn cannot contradict the past things we already learned. They can only polish the details.

This is demonstrably false. Citations provided:
Ether, contradicted by Michelson-Morley
Stationary continents, contradicted by plate techtonics.
Static universe, contradicted by Hubble (the astronomer, not the telescope).

U.S. Students/Grads Carrying Over $1 Trillion In Debt

dataspel Re:Tell me again... (538 comments)

Your mileage may vary of course. I put myself and 2 children through school with 0 debt. In my state, 4 years in-state tuition+fees+housing+food is now about 64K. Higher than most states, I think. Subtract 2 upper division years housing+food and 2 lower division years and you get about 16K. Add about 6K for 2 years of community college and 2K for used/rented books and that is about 24K. Oops, I guess I did miscalculate a bit. Would be interested in hearing your exact costs.

U.S. Students/Grads Carrying Over $1 Trillion In Debt

dataspel Re:Tell me again... (538 comments)

This. Live with your parents, work anywhere, save a little money, don't spend it on video games. 2 years community college plus 2 years state school is less than USD 20k. Graduate debt free. Don't be an English major.

Astronauts defend Mount Marilyn

dataspel dataspel writes  |  about a year ago

dataspel (2436808) writes "Apollo astronauts William Anders and James Lovell would like to have their mountain back. During pre-flight planning, informal names were given to various features along the flight path, including Mount Marilyn, in honor of Lovell's wife, Marilyn. But the unromantic IAU has instead named it Mount Secchi. The astronauts have asked the IAU to restore their preferred name. So far, no response has been forthcoming."

TV movie options for the mild cognitive impaired

dataspel dataspel writes  |  more than 2 years ago

dataspel (2436808) writes "My parent would like to watch movies on TV, but is unable to navigate anything more complicated than a TV remote channel selector. Even choosing the input mode is too difficult. Is there any technology so that she can channel surf, but also where I can remotely select a movie from say, Amazon.com, have it play seamlessly without her input, and where I would return it to channel surfing mode when the movie is over?"
