Building Secure Computers?

dave-fu C2 Orange Book or Red Book? (628 comments)

If they were going for an Orange Book, or standalone, certification, it would make sense to yank the IP stack (which would sort of be needed to achieve a Red Book, or networked, certification) off of the box. Or would removing all unneeded cruft from a box be counter-intuitive when you're hardening it? If this is so, can I get some security clearance so I can play nethack on a classified box? That would be SWEET.
Also, I thought the rumormongering consensus around here was that Microsoft "borrowed" its IP stack from the reference BSD implementation?

Nothing you didn't already know, but there you go.
Microsoft gets caught with its pants down, 40 articles times umpteen pages of blah blah open source is the way to go blah blah M$ sucks tripe. Slashdot gets caught with its pants down and it just goes to show the power of open source plus that was never a development release people should know what they were getting into blah blah blah oh by the way it never happened.
Good job, guys!

Entirely too long since I really trolled.

dave-fu dave-fu writes  |  more than 12 years ago

Karma capped, not worth my time, but it is something to do while I'm compiling in the background, huh?
Throwing out a softball I got 11 biters today. Christ these geeks are so fucking predictable it makes me laugh sometimes.
When I'm not gagging.

HURFING AND BURFING

dave-fu dave-fu writes  |  more than 12 years ago

Now that I've got enough karma for 3 +2 trolls, I'll have to make them count. If only Civ3 wasn't so addictive despite its glaring flaws I'd be having an easier time of it.
So I'm looking forward to the 72 hour ban while still rocking the +2 karma bonus. HURR BLURR LINUX URRRR MICRO$OFT LUSERS and all that jazz. Hemos/Michael/Timothy 3-way in 4000 characters? It's a challenge I must face.

Fantabular!

The new, non-"click here to read rest of comment"-ified version of the origins of CmdrTaco are go! Ha ha!
Also, I clocked about 20 seconds from its posting to my initial downward moderation. It just don't get any better than that, does it?

Straight pimpin'.

dave-fu dave-fu writes  |  more than 12 years ago

So this post was what I was talking about for my Troll Tuesday 2001 surprise.
Trolls, if you're interested in using this, let me know. I'm working on a stripped-down version that will all fit in a regular screenview, so, uh. There you go.

Don't worry, it's coming.

Earth-shattering? Not hardly, but good stuff nonetheless.
You'll see.

Recycling ahoy!

*BSD is dead, and I'll soon be whipping this horse well after it's terminally *BSDed.
Just the right balance of insight and flaming and it reads like a hack essay. There should be some good responses to this.

Fucking formkeys.

dave-fu dave-fu writes  |  more than 12 years ago

With the two not-as-pro-Linux-as-we-normally-post articles today, fucking Slashcode cock-blocked me with some formkeys bullshit. Motherfuckers.
Who the fuck decided that piece of shit Perl was ever ready to go fucking primetime? Bitchbastards.
OH DEAR GOD NO LINUX HAS A ROOT EXPLOIT MUST APT-GET AND THEN MAKE FUN OF MICRO$OFTIES FOR HAVING TO DOWNLOAD SERVICE PACKS TWICE A YEAR URRRR WHEN IS THE NEW KERNEL OUT SO I CAN FUCK UP MY SYSTEM WITH FUCKED DEPENDENCIES AGAIN?

Got the karma to burn on a juicy troll, just have to figure out when and where.
Hmm.

Whatever happened to Troll Tuesday?

dave-fu dave-fu writes  |  more than 12 years ago

It petered out towards the end of the business day there. On the bright side, I was seeing better than a 25% quality/crap (read: troll/inane banter) ratio in most threads, so kudos to all those who came through in the clutch. Or something.
Everyone else just didn't want it enough.

K-whoring is a pain.

dave-fu dave-fu writes  |  more than 12 years ago Mostly because the system has a funny way of slowly but steadily eroding away my karma without actual user moderation. Imagine that!
Progress is slow but steady. Keep on keeping on with the easy hot-button topics (the RIAA enslaved my family! microsoft is bad! etc.) and avoid the grey areas and I'll make it to bonusland soon enough.

Troll heaven.

dave-fu dave-fu writes  |  more than 12 years ago

When do you think the last time the average Slashbotter dipped their wick compared to the last time the average troll got some? I'm putting my money on the trolls having the more active sex life, doubly so since the dot com bust means Slashbotters can't afford whores anymore. What a shame.
Jesus christ I can't believe mySQL is so shitty. Best tool for the job and all, but fuck. Access runs rings around that POS. That's just sad.
I don't mind zealots, but I can't fucking stand ideologues.
