Former CIA/NSA Head: NSA Is "Infinitely" Weaker As a Result of Snowden's Leaks

dave87656 Mixed Feelings (572 comments)

On the one hand I commend him for exposing the extent to which American's communications are being monitored outside of what I consider to be the bounds of the constitution (no unreasonable search, etc). On the other hand, information about what the US is doing to other countries is a very delicate matter. True, we like to think of ourselves as the good guys who don't spy on our allies but, the reality might be that all countries are doing it. Certainly the Russians and the Chinese are.

My hope is that we will have some clarity and limitations on US spying respecting our constitution. Let's not forget that most of the people working at the NSA believe that they are doing the right thing to protect our country, but let's also not forget that power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely,

EV Owner Arrested Over 5 Cents Worth of Electricity From School's Outlet

dave87656 Re:Cop was "in his car"? (1010 comments)

vehicle owners have no right to plug in whereever they find an outlet.

I agree. I wouldn't be happy if I came home and someone had parked their car in my driveway and was charging it using the external socket on my patio. Of course, I live in Germany where our electricity costs 28 euro cents (about 38 US cents) per KW.

So What If Yahoo's New Dads Get Less Leave Than Moms?

dave87656 Is anyone really surprised (832 comments)

Men are discriminated in business (quotas), in divorce, in the news and in the justice system. Otherwise, we're treated equally.

Florida Teen Expelled and Arrested For Science Experiment

dave87656 Re:Playing the race card again (1078 comments)

Oh where have the real "conservatives" gone? It used to be, growing up in rural America, that we, a politically conservative family back then, believed in not labeling anyone according to some physical trait. So the secretary at my father's office wasn't black or African American or anything else, she was just "Jinny" just like everyone else was who they were.

Of course, now the republican party has turned in to "the best government money can buy" and the democrats seem to have elements of the entitlement crowd both from the lower income side and from the big business side.

Sigh .....

Florida Teen Expelled and Arrested For Science Experiment

dave87656 Re:Playing the race card again (1078 comments)

After reading the article (RTFA) it appears that it had nothing to do with race. Had a white kid done the same experiment, he/she would have probably been treated the same way. The fact is, it creates an explosion. Now, expulsion and a felony for that is way overdone. A reprimand and a warning would have been enough, IMHO.

ZDNet Proclaims "Windows: It's Over"

dave87656 Re:Whats the alternative? (863 comments)

MS cannot sustain an 'every other version is a flub' business model

Funny you should mention that. I believe they can ... because they still pretty much have a monopoly. Do you really have a choice? Sure, you could get a Mac at 4 times the cost, but, that's not seriously an option.

BTW, I have a Win 8 laptop and I really don't think it's that bad, but this post is coming to you from Ubuntu 12.04 LTS.

Ask Slashdot: Building a Web App Scalable To Hundreds of Thousand of Users?

dave87656 Re:Wt (274 comments)

Interesting. I was wondering if someone else would recommend C++. I've been using for a small app because of available libraries and scalability. If I had to write a web-based app and I had to be sure it was fast, I would use C++ and possibly fastCGI.

GTK+ 3.8 Released With Support For Wayland

dave87656 Re:Load and unload the X cruft on demand (193 comments)

Especially since stuff doesn't just randomly change for the sake of change

This is something which has really bothered me with Linux for a while. We are using Ubuntu for the most part and the constant changes drive me and the users nuts. Now Canonical which was going to use wayland is now going yet another direction. Sheesh.

Cold Spring Linked To Dramatic Sea Ice Loss

dave87656 Re:Ask Michael Oppenheimer. (422 comments)

Um ... you are using fox news as a reference here? Seriously? Isn't that the network that actually sued to be able to lie to viewers presumably under the guise that television and news is entertainment.

Cold Spring Linked To Dramatic Sea Ice Loss

dave87656 Re:Global warming (422 comments)

I live in Germany and they've been talking about the fact that the shift in the jet stream will makes our weather colder for many years now. This is nothing new. What might be new is what is causing the shift in the jet stream.

GCC 4.8.0 Release Marks Completion of C++ Migration

dave87656 Re:chicken or egg? (269 comments)

Don't laugh, my first programming (and only) on a commodore 64 was using the basic interpreter to poke 6502 (IIRC) instruction codes into memory which copied the screen contents from the screen register area to memory and wrote another program to restore it.

Wrong Fuel Chokes Presidential Limo

dave87656 Too many ads (612 comments)

I went to watch the video but there was a 40 seconds ad first so I closed it. 40 seconds is probably longer than the actual video.

On the page about the presidential diesel an ad blocked the article.

Some people can't get enough.

Solaris Machine Shut Down After 3737 Days of Uptime

dave87656 Re:Throw a bomb on GEMA! (409 comments)

Do these fucking retards think that The World is their property?

In a word ... yes

When you buy a smart phone, they collect something like 40 euros. They make more money on the smart phone than the manufacturer does! And they collect that because you "could" uses it to store and play music. But, if you were actually to do such a thing, which you have now paid for with the 40 euro surcharge, you would be committing a criminal act. And the smart phone is just the tip of the iceberg.

A friend of mine is a musician and plays in clubs. He plays his own music and the club still has to pay GEMA more money than he makes. So, yes, they at least think they own all music. This is my opinion, of course. (My lawyer says I have to write that so they don't sue me).

Can you post that on Vimeo so those of us in Germany can watch it? Most videos which have music in them are restricted here but they are stuck on youtube so usually Vimeo will work for a while.

Ask Slashdot: Spreadsheet With Decent Programming Language?

dave87656 Re:My problem is quite the opposite. (332 comments)

I've found the same to be true that if I really want to be effective in almost any software task, I sit down and work it out on paper. I use a fountain pen rather than a pencil but that's irrelevant).

A recent study found that students writing their notes on paper had better retention than those using notebooks.

YMMV ;-)

Ask Slashdot: Spreadsheet With Decent Programming Language?

dave87656 Re:My problem is quite the opposite. (332 comments)

Yes, I would agree with that. I used to use Quattro Pro which was excellent but it had at least one annoying problem: when any part of the spreadsheet was obscured and then any or part of that became visible, the whole window would refresh. It turned out later that, according to an article I read, there was a Windows API which would only repaint the uncovered area, but that was hidden and only the Office people knew about it. More proof of the unfair advantage MS gave their office group and withheld from competitors.
