Russian Scientist Claims Signs of Life Spotted On Venus

daveatneowindotnet And here I thought... (272 comments)

...that someone found and interesting chemical compound is the atmosphere or some other evidence of microscopic life on Venus, instead this guy claims he sees a "black flap" in pictures from the 80's. The article itself doesn't even have pictures with red circles around these flying magic aliens for me to gawk at and laugh about. I'm not only questioning Slashdot, but the original story, why would anyone care?

Lord of the Rings Online To Go Free-To-Play

daveatneowindotnet Re:So rich persons get an edge? (138 comments)

Well if it means anything, all PVP is completely voluntary in DDO, most of what you can pay for, is either time saving items (exp percentage bonuses) or content and the fact that every dungeon is instanced means you can simply play how and with whom you please.

Well I live in the Philly Metro area, I'll keep you in mind if it doesn't pan out.

Why anyone would pick Philadelphia as a launch city is beyond me. That's like recruiting beta testers from the Special Olympics.

Google Rejects Australian Censorship Proposal

daveatneowindotnet Re:familiar (197 comments)

Exactly, Google is grand standing against the much less menacing Australian Government. The only reason pulled out of China was a) they were the kings of the internet like they are back home and b) an attack that came from China (potentially). PR move in my mind

Saying No To Promotions Away From Tech?

daveatneowindotnet Re:Take it as long as they pay you an extra amount (410 comments)

Agreed, you have to take. Even if they weren't planning on paying you for on call duty. The key word above is "new" as in "a new manager". Sounds like you are either going to become useful in the way this new manager wants you to be, or you will quickly become an example of the fact that this manager is willing to let go people who aren't following his plan.

SarBox Lawsuit Could Rewrite IT Compliance Rules

daveatneowindotnet Re:Rule #1 of government.... (124 comments)

It'd be nice if they were irrelevant, unfortunately all they are managing to do is drive up the cost of everything the government pays for and shield incompetent and even dangerous employees working for the government while providing no protection for the american worker from big business. Or at least that is how they work in America, that and they bury Jimmy Hoffa in Giants Stadium.

Marijuana Could Prevent Alzheimer's, New Study

daveatneowindotnet Re:Rational (807 comments)

This would probably be handled exactly the way it's handled if somebody's drinking gets in the way of work. Treatment if it's a touchy-feelie company, termination if it's a draconian company, or indifference if it's an average company. To be honest most of your argument would be identical if you replaced "smoking pot" with "being a sober idiot". I don't think anybody would suggest we can really legislate idiocy with any hope of success either.

Fallout 3 DLC Detailed

daveatneowindotnet Re:Paranoia (137 comments)

Fallout games have always had a 20-level cap. This is the 3rd fallout game in the series. You'd expect its game mechanics to follow the other two, even if it is in 3d and not 2d isometric.

I would expect it to follow the previous game mechanics. Unfortunately the other games do not all cap at twenty. I remember clearly going well past 20 in FO2 after discovering the in game strategy guide.

Ballmer Sets Loose Windows 7 Public Beta At CES

daveatneowindotnet Re:Least popular?? (672 comments)

However, even for the "most hated" award, it's a tight race between ME and Vista. I'd say the hatred of ME is more intense, while the hate for Vista is more widespread.

I don't know, YOU seem like a nice enough guy. Though your self important need to have references to YOU in all caps is a little annoying.

Avoiding Wasted Time With Prince of Persia

daveatneowindotnet Re:If there's no risk to the story, why watch a fi (507 comments)

Excellent point, maybe you shouldn't call a game without the chance for a failure a game at all. And while you (or anyone for that matter) "playing" without risk of failure doesn't make you a bad person, it does strongly imply that you are not that good at video games. I think this topic is more about revealing psychology thru games then people seem to realize.

Visual Hallucinations Are a Normal Grief Reaction

daveatneowindotnet Re:Couldn't this also mean (550 comments)

"Occam's Razor" is a useless tool as it relies on a mind to subjectively decide what is "likely" and than declare it as objective. Being a skeptic requires you to be skeptical of everything, otherwise you are just a different type of adherent.
