Pseudonyms Now Allowed On Google+

davevt5 When is this active? (238 comments)

I held off on selecting a custom user name as I knew this day would come. That said, is this active for all accounts? The post didn't say it was being rolled out over the coming days/weeks. When you go to Profit - About - Get URL you cannot select any name. Am I missing something here?

Agreed! Thanks for posting the response. So quick to dog the NSA (for good reason) but this is a bulshite headline.

Instagram User Drop Claims Overblown

davevt5 Note the source (49 comments)

We in our tech circles know about the T&C of Instagram but to think that 25% of Instagram users know anything about this--much less care enough to stop using the service simply does not pass the sniff test.

NY Post, a questionably new source to begin with citing AppData, a company that has to use conjecture to create insight means there is NO NEWS HERE PEOPLE.

I've largely lurked for the past 15 years but /. is the first site I've visited each day for my entire adult life. This is a sad day for me and for all slashdotters. If they try any unified login bullshit or site enhancements I will die.

This is built for people who are right handed. That vast majority of people that matter to me are left-handed.

Any chance there will be a version sold at the Leftorium?

Lenovo Tinkers With Larger Delete and Escape Keys

davevt5 Re:Caps lock will be the end of unintended shoutin (586 comments)

I have a Lenovo T400 and the placement of the DEL key always annoyed me. I use a program called KeyTweak (http://webpages.charter.net/krumsick/) to remap my lenovo keyboard as follows:

Right CTRL key is DEL
Those silly keys to the right and left of the up arrow are HOME and END

And finally, drum roll please... the CAPS key is mapped to the TAB key so I have a gigantic space to mash my chubby fingers when looking for a tab stop!

What Do You Do With a Personal Domain?

davevt5 Here's what I did: using Friendfeed and no backend (286 comments)

I found myself in a similar situation. I do blog but so infrequently that going to my personal domain makes it look like I don't do anything.

Here's what I'm working on... It's not designed yet but the functionality is there...

I created this page: http://www.davidcatalano.com/digital/
I'm going to move it to the root but need to move my Wordpress install first...

So what is it? It is the steam of updates that I make on a number of social website including Twitter, Delicious, Facebook, Digg and SmugMug. The site puts everything in chronological order and allows for filtering and searching by keyword. It is all powered by FriendFeed and doesn't require any backend what so ever.

Let me know what you think and if you are interested in using it ask me first david9@modea.com (remove the 9)

Apple Support Survey

davevt5 davevt5 writes  |  more than 8 years ago

A day or two after I completed my very unsuccessful call with Apple Support I received an email with a link to a survey. Of course I was eager to respond to the survey. Writing down your thoughts and feelings helps you to 'move past' them and to more-or-less get on with your life. So, I go to click on the link and what do I get? Nothing. It's a dead link. I couldn't believe it. I was infuriated. But I wasn't willing to give up. I kept the email in my inbox and tried clicking on the link ever few days. Days became weeks and I soon forgot about it - until today. I just clicked the link and low-and-behold I was presented with a feedback form. After giving all "extremely dissatisfied" marks I was provided with a text box for additional feedback. Here it is (and remember, it's been about 5 weeks now)

You could have simply mailed a replacement "keycap" for the TAB key. My key broke on day 2. I was told to either 1) mail back my laptop and wait two weeks or 2) drive an hour and drop it off a an authorized reseller.

In either event they were going to replace the ENTIRE keyboard. For one little piece of plastic that probably cost 2 cents.

I ended up purchasing a keycap from a website on the Internet for ~$9.00 because Apple support was so ineffective.

I, like many people out there have many friends who are MacAddicts. They love and preach the goodness of that which we call MAC. Well, so far life is not greener on this side. In fact, it's quite cold, lonely and laden with brushed steel.

I am whole, once again, I am whole.

davevt5 davevt5 writes  |  more than 8 years ago

Well, I'm pleased to say that my TAB keycap has finally arrived. With much trepidation I replaced the cap. I have feared breaking the new keycap ever since I ordered it. Luckily, it seemed to have gone off w/ (breaking) a hitch.

It really was an eye sore. Maddening even. But alas, I am once again whole.

So much for the warranty on my new Macbook Pro. I suppose you could consider it more "catastrophe insurance." I ordered a Keycap for my Macbook Pro yesterday from Mac Powerbook Medic. The keycap cost 8.95 plus shipping. However I found a coupon online for $5 off your order. I couldn't believe that counted for orders under 10 bux! I ended up paying just over $4 to have the keycap shipped to my house. This is what I would pay in gas to drive to and from the closest authorized Apple service center (in Roanoke). Why Apple wouldn't just mail me the keycap still boggles my mind.

My Mac Crashed!

davevt5 davevt5 writes  |  more than 8 years ago

Last night I crashed my brand new Macbook Pro. I didn't think that was supposed to happen. All I was doing was:
- surfing the web
- listening to iTunes
- installing the Opera browser
- installing Windows XP in Parallels

What gives? ;-P

Brand New Macbook Pro with a Broken Key (keycap)

davevt5 davevt5 writes  |  more than 8 years ago

I just bought a Macbook Pro hoping to get the "Apple Experience" and on Day 2 my TAB key broke. Well, the "keycap' as its called broke. There are two nearly-microscopic clasps that hold it to the keyboard and one of them broke off. Now the key continues to come off.

I called Apple Support and they said there is NO WAY they can just mail me a new keycap (probably about 1/2cent worth of plastic). Instead they must replace the whole keyboard. They then presented me w/ two options, I also discovered a third:
1) Send it back (wait two weeks) and they'll take care of it
2) Take it to an authorized service center to get it fixed
3) Buy a replacement keycap on the Internet (my option, not one suggested by Apple)

1 - NO WAY -- I just got this puppy, I'm not about to go ship it off. Plus, its not my sole computer so this is more than just an inconvenience
2 - 45 minutes to get to Roanoke. I haven't even called to find out if they can do it while I wait because this whole thing is just a big let down. I'm a former Windows (TM) user so ALT-TAB is used quite heavily. Every time I try I get frustrated.
3 - The cost for a new keycap is $8.95 plus shipping. This isn't for all keys, but the ONE key of my choice. This is quite a rip off but once you factor in gas to Roanoke and the BS of calling, waiting, etc this might be the simplest method.

So I'm not sure what to do but it is VERY frustrating. The Apple Support person spent half of the call telling me about OneCare or something like that. It's Apple's extended support (for an additional $349). That's a lot of money.

PS - this is my first /. Journal entry. I've been a member for a long time but never even knew what this was. More to come...?
