US Charges Edward Snowden With Espionage

davvr6 The remedy of all this spying is "net neutrality". (442 comments)

Domestic spying is the ultimate tool for coercion and of corruption and it is made possible by the blessing of the telcos. The remedy of all this spying will be "net neutrality". To prevent "net neutrality" telcos have made a deal with the devil.

US Charges Edward Snowden With Espionage

davvr6 Re:Didn't need to be the NSA (442 comments)

Not really. If they collected Facebook data, they would have to apply their bullshit algorithm to each individual. If you're correct that 16% of Facebook users are not Americans, then they would come up with something like 49% false-foreign results on the remaining 84%, which are Americans, or about 42%. That means their actual percentage of supposed foreigners in Facebook would be something like 58%, which casts a net over many millions of American citizens. And *that* is not only "technically" legal, under the current law it would be "fully legal", and legally defensible. But fucking retarded. They've gone too far.

This is one step away from becoming a watergate like scenario. And surely in the future many watergate like scenarios!

We Should Be Allowed To Unlock Everything We Own

davvr6 WiFiFoFum (317 comments)

Ever tried to set up a wireless network? ppff.. Previously with WiFiFoFum one could see all the relative networks in terms of signal strength an then manually pick a wireless frequency that was as of yet unoccupied. This worked like gold! I'm not an expert but hidden networks aren't really hidden but are just asking to remain hidden as part of a wireless protocol. Apple decided this legitimate network analysis tool broke into people " hidden networks " and banned it overnight. Now we are in this ridiculous state of affairs where none can work properly because somebody once somewhere abused something at least as it was reported to be. If I was a network administrator I would have to have a broken iPhone. The alternative would be stumbling blindly throughout the internet. Caveat I don't own a hacked iPhone but sometimes I wish i did!

AC and DC Battle For Data Center Efficiency Crown

davvr6 Re:Snapshot Buffering in battery backed up ram? (168 comments)

Maybe the whole of the computer could be constantly be mapped into battery backed up ram and subsequently reinserted into the/a cpu when there was enough power to run it.

AC and DC Battle For Data Center Efficiency Crown

davvr6 Snapshot Buffering in battery backed up ram? (168 comments)

To me it seems that AC wins. As long as individual devices have some form of usefull state buffering until the DC/AC inverters kick in to generate more AC. Maybe a mother board could be made where only ram is batery backed up. With huge amounts of ram huge history records could be used to effectively snapshot and propel the computer beyond a power glitch.

Canadian Govt To Introduce Massive Internet Surveillance Law

davvr6 Re:Au Contraire (215 comments)

It's OK to spend spend spend bailing out banks. Conservatives have set back canadian national debt repayment of debt by 30 years. Bought I forgot only socialist care about national interest. But that's OK cause we really don't want those pesky social programs like retirement benefits but rather we prefer austerity. I remember a time when freedom from government was on the conservative agenda too.

Apple Could Lose $1.6 Billion In iPad Lawsuit

davvr6 Are we really getting to the bottom of this? (286 comments)

No, this is the cost of doing business poorly. A trademark search needs to be international in scope if you plan on making an international product. On top of damages Apple should be prohibited from further infringement (rename the product in countries with a previously registered trademark). There was a similar debacle (within the US registry if I remember) over the iPhone. I think it was settled, but the infringing product (Apple's iPhone) should have been pulled off the shelves, relabeled, and future infringement explicitly prohibited. It seems that Apple only cares about IP when they can use it to keep others out of their business - the evidence here is that they don't even bother looking to see if they infringe in a direction they want to go.

Would love to no if all the car companies i.e. ( hyundai and ford etc ) are paying Borg-Warner for the DSG concept. Then one never knows because of private arrangements if an idea is stolen or purchased. And then there is ABS where the only genuine form comes from bosh. Ever wonder why asian ABS sucks? Are magnetic shocks already stolen from Delfi? It would seem it is OK to steal an idea but not a name. Originally weren't patents supposed to protect inventors? Not Add companys?

davvr6 I need more info on iOS 4.1 (579 comments)

Waiting with a Parrot RKi8400 in it's box cause right now bluetooth audio isn't working and dock connection has quit. I'm not opening the box just to find out what doesn't work. Apple what were you thinking all kinds of stereo makers are broken , see http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2470321&tstart=0 Apple has broken a whole bunch of stuff with 4.0 4.01 and 4.02 4.1 where are you and do you make owning Parrot RKi8400 worth owning or not? I have 30 days with amazon to return it. What i really want is for the dock connector to work and I would also like the option of crummy blue tooth audio. 3Gs 32GB

Skype App Updated, Allows 3G Calling On the iPhone

davvr6 I hope they keep the pay as you go model intact (109 comments)

Please Skype if you are reading this? Skype is great! I talk to land lines for pennies an hour and if I call a mobile I know it costs more. Now they are saying effectively that if you call from a mobile it will cost more and I can live with that. We have an excellent wireless router and skype from my iphone is often better than with my voip service which is free in US and Canada. I am always chipping away at the Euros in my account because I am seldom doing skype to skype. I am willing to pay something modest but I only want to pay for it when I use it. How much data does a minute of skype voice calling use up? I have a 1 GB plan and I rarely use more than 500MB.

Apple Removes Wi-Fi Finders From App Store

davvr6 WiFiFoFum (461 comments)

I bought the app and it has been great. It helped me check to see if I was sharing a common wifi channel with my nearest neighbours. It also tells me the -db signal strength around the house. and it lets me log on to a range of foreign hotspots that apples settings just won't let you see. I used it today. I somehow think that this has something to do with the heralding of wireless N on the iphone. Just my hunch. But I agree it is both strange and Kafkaesque.

Apple's Mini DisplayPort Officially Adopted By VESA

davvr6 MDP is the best video connector. (160 comments)

If you compare the Single DVI , VGA , or even the full sized DisplayPort an awful connector!, the Mini Display Port is as simple to use as USB, the others are cumbersome and outmoded . Too bad it didn't fully encompass Dual DVI. On Desktop I have Dual DVI too and I am getting decent calibrations with either. There is some USB + MDP adapter for other macs but I would somehow miss a good old Dual DVI cable firmly screwed in ( reminding me of scsi ) but I am shocked to see decent, and sometimes better calibration from MDP adapter than over the direct DVI itself. Though via MDP DDC EDID now have pretty good support for most graphic cards.

Up to 32GB of ram in a Mac Pro Quad Core Nahalem

davvr6 davvr6 writes  |  more than 4 years ago

davvr6 (823826) writes "This might sound a little trivial to some of you out there, but to me the discovery that my Mac Pro Quad Core Xeon 3500 can be populated up up to 32GB is truly fantastic news!
I will now begin saving for 24 or 32 GB and I'm really glad I waited!
Apple originally said that the quad could only take 8 and now they say 16.
Armed with the knowledge that Intel did officially support 24GB for my CPU I have combed the internet looking for 3 DDR3 8GB dimms. http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=39719&processor=W3540&spec-codes=SLBEX
The ram I was looking for had to be 1024M x 72, Dual Rank ECC Memory Module,CAS 7-7-7-20, Thermal sensor, unregistered/unbuffered.
I found registered ram and still remain uncertain as to whether would have worked or not.
But here it is!
