Old School Sci-fi Short Starring Keir Dullea Utilizes Classic Effects

deadcrow Great little film (91 comments)

I think this film was designed to make you want to go dig out your copy of 2001 and watch it. And in that, it succeeded.

Being a 21%er I did get to enjoy the film.

deadcrow Hide & die anyway, or opt out? (208 comments)

Duck around the corner. Then thud thud thud, you are dead anyway. And this is the "fixed" code. This article suggests another fix; don't buy the game. I just hope this new fix works better than the prior ones. LOL.

Leaked Heartland Institute Documents Reveal Opposition To Science

deadcrow Who am I supposed to believe? (615 comments)

1) Some scientists believe there in NO Global warming.
2) Most scientists believe Global Warming is happening.
3) Among those, probably most believe that Man contributes to this warming.
4) Among those, even fewer believe than Man contributes a lot to global warming.
5) Many of that group believe Mans contribution is going to result in a catastrophe.

What I hear from these groups is:
1) The science is not completed. We need further study.
2) The science is not completed. We need further study.
3) The science is not completed. We need further study.
4) The science is not completed. We need further study. Start to become concerned and consider radical changes.
5) The science is complete. Panic. The other scientists are hacks, don't believe them. Radical changes NOW!

Hybrids Safer In Crashes — Except For Pedestrians

deadcrow Hollywood was right all these years? (392 comments)

All of the future cars in shows from the Jetsons to Bladerunner have made some cool "futuristic" sound. I always thought it was silly. I was wrong. Because apparently, in the future, cars will be required to made "futuristic" sounds.. Who would have guessed?

Dutch Government To Tax Drivers Based On Car Use

deadcrow Re:Great and fair (500 comments)

Your bicycle, feet, and mass transit use the roads. AFAIK no mass transit system in America, and only a few in the world, makes a profit. So my tax dollars are subsidizing your ride on said mass transit. Kinda break even I would say, you pay for my car usage of the road, I pay for your bus.

Dutch Government To Tax Drivers Based On Car Use

deadcrow Re:all wrong questions (500 comments)

Seriously, the same folks that worry so about Orwellian 1984 style government have brought us the Nanny State. Fools can't even see that it is the same thing, and they created it. They sit here today supporting it, while in the same breath bemoaning that the conservatives want to control our lives. And since we obviously don't want that, vote for our Nanny State.

The Case For Surrealism In Games

deadcrow Some games pursue reality but others do not (186 comments)

Not all games are pursuing reality. Just look at games like "Cat God vs Sun King" and "Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet". They don't even try for a realistic name. The author mentions several different games, especially the Alice game as examples of the type he thinks are better than ultra-realistic games. As long as games like this exist, there is balance in the realism of games. And no need to panic.

A great point. Because taxation is nothing but forced crowdsourcing. And inefficient croudsourcing at that, because the government only ever spends a small percentage of the take on projects.

LOL. Nope, didn't just learn about that sad argument tactic. My reply is a statement of truth well understood by many for a long time, using appropriate verbiage for this discourse. And another LOL to you for continuing to make @bonch's point.

And like I said, if you insist that I am Anony, I can't stop you. But you would still be wrong. It IS quite amusing that you can conceive of no other truth than that. In my experience, that usually means the accuser is guilty of the accused behavior.

deadcrow Re:Downgrading doesn't really matter (1239 comments)

It matters that it is considered an insult, no matter how derived. And since it is a gross reference to a sex act, it is not polite, despite how it may have come to be.

Therefore, being used as an insult, it is childish. However it was created. When insults rather than content are used in political discussions, the natural assumption is that the insulter has no content. When people use childish insults in adult discussions, they deserve to be called on it. Whatever the history of said insult.

P.S. Funny how you keep using my AV name when replying to others. On this point somebody else without a login/coward is making supportive statements, but that does not make them me. You can think they are if you wish, but you would be wrong. As you can see, I am perfectly capable of replying with my own login.

Gee thanks. We ALL know what it means. You seemed to have missed the part about it being a juvenile insult. Comprehend much? Oh, that's right, too busy attacking (and hence making @bonch's point).

Congressman Seeks Second Life Ban In Schools

deadcrow deadcrow writes  |  more than 6 years ago

deadcrow (946749) writes "U.S. Rep. Mark Kirk, R, Illinois is trying to revive his DOPA act and wants to ban Second Life from Schools and Libraries. According to his official web site "Second Life could sexually exploit children via Internet"

"According to a U.S. Department of Justice survey, one-in-five kids have been sexually solicited online,", the Congressman said. "As new technologies develop, more disturbing revelations unfold. Sites like Second Life offer no protections to keep kids from virtual 'rape rooms,' brothels and drug stores. If sites like Second Life won't protect kids from obviously inappropriate content, then Congress will." Information Week stated (The congressman created the DOPA (Deleting Online Predators Act)) “in 2006 to prevent children from accessing social networking sites and chat rooms unless they do so for "legitimate educational purpose" under adult supervision.” and “It passed the House by a 410-15 vote but died in the Senate. It now has 91 co-sponsors.”

It looks like Linden Labs will have to institute identity checking or find itself banned."
