Canadian Government Trucking Generations of Scientific Data To the Dump

diodeus Re:A war. (209 comments)

The single-minded focus on the (tar sands) economy has demonstrated that the current Canadian Government has lost touch with what's important to the Canadian people.

How Heroin Addicts Helped Scientists Link Pesticides and Parkinson's

diodeus Re:Book (109 comments)

I remember in the 70s hearing about the DEA spraying paraquat on fields of weed found in Hawaii as a "tainting" scare tactic. I wonder if there's a connection there too.

Most IT Workers Don't Have STEM (Science, Tech, Engineering, Math) Degrees

diodeus Re:I'm a non-degree slacker (655 comments)

Yeah, back then I was running a BBS with a C-64, and fiddling around with and Amiga and an Atari-ST. Going into CS meant working on a VT-100 terminal on some mainframe. It seems like a big step backwards, so I never bothered.

New York City Considers Articulated Subway Cars

diodeus Re:Why one Toronto subway driver doesn't like them (237 comments)

The cars are 300 feet long. That's a lot of barf. (I live in Toronto and have never experienced this). I like these new trains. They're great!

I typically visit a doctor (for medical reasons) ...

diodeus Re:I guess I'm not indestructible after all (415 comments)

I'm Canadian, while the medical system here is not perfect, not having "decent" health insurance is not a life or death or bankruptcy situation. The whole anti-Oamacare movement is baffling to most of us up here.

diodeus Seen from space = BS (174 comments)

You can see any surface feature "from space" including the licence plate on my car with the right equipment. I'm so sick of people throwing around this meaningless term.

Is Innovation the Most Abused Word In Business?

diodeus Re:No (287 comments)

I always thought the abused word was "REVOLUTIONARY".

"It's a revolution in _________"

Small minds can only think of big imaginary things, especially in the marketing department.

Confessions of a Left-Handed Technology User

diodeus Re:Silly (267 comments)

Try any Adobe product. With your left hand on the mouse, try using copy/paste. The left-handed shortcut is CTRL+INS/SHIFT+INS. This works on virtually every windows application, EXCEPT those made by Adobe where you are forced to use the right-handed CTRL+C/CTRL+V, which is virtually impossible to do with your left hand on the mouse. As a web UI dev, this is a complete pain is the ass.

Resurrect Your Old Code With a DIY Punch Card Reader

diodeus Re:OK, show of hands ... (100 comments)

In Grade 11 (1982) we were forced to use he punch-card machines in com-sci class for the first week. The deck would be sent over to the Board of Ed office and run on their machine overnight, then your printout would be sent back to your school the next day. It was a lesson in being accurate and checking your work, which was sadly lost on the bunch of us.

Then came the day where I found this drawer where all the "holes" went. This resulted in a big confetti fight in the teacher's parking lot.

Next week we moved onto using the TRS-80 Model One, with casettes. Oh joy!

Ask Slashdot: Value of Website Design Tools vs. Hand Coding?

diodeus Re:Hand code or no code. (342 comments)

I agree. WYSIWIG is handy for marking-up blocks of *copy* with pre-defined styles. It ends there. Professional drivers don't use automatic transmissions, they do it manually, so should any self-respecting web developer.

Autocorrect for everyone

diodeus diodeus writes  |  more than 8 years ago

Can someone at Slashdot please auto-correct people's postings so that:

- it's becomes its (it's = it is, its = belonging to it)
- loosing becomes losing

Even if autocorrection changes the correct form to the incorrect form it will still be correct a higher percentage of the time.
