EA Outs Battlefield 4, Plans To Charge $70 For New Games

dontPanik Re:launching an exe from a web browser is stupid (323 comments)

I disliked the browser launcher at first too... but then I actually grew to like it. It's sort of convenient to be able to browse servers and then pop over to slashdot while the game is loading.

Women's Enrollment In Computer Science Correlates Negatively With Net Access

dontPanik Re:What's the advantage? Why does it matter? (314 comments)

Can someone explain to me why it matters if more or less women are studying computer science?

Because we're tired of it being a sausage fest?

Women's Enrollment In Computer Science Correlates Negatively With Net Access

dontPanik Re:I don't get it (314 comments)

My interpretation of the charts is that less women enrolled in comp sci programs during both of the large influxes of students? I'm not sure what to gleam from that.

Women's Enrollment In Computer Science Correlates Negatively With Net Access

dontPanik Re:Maybe women are smarter than men (314 comments)

But people who graduate with comp sci degrees make more than graduates in other fields. You can argue that perhaps the work is worse in other ways but the pay should at least be attracting anyone smart.

Parlez-vous Python?

dontPanik structure not code (164 comments)

I don't think it's super important to know the lines of code, it's more important to know the structure of how content is distributed on the internet. If people want to expand their information age knowledge, they should look to understand the structure of the internet, protocols and server architecture and such. That's what laymen need in order to keep up.

dontPanik Re:Smart people can be dumb (578 comments)

SXSW is a pretty big deal, it's known across the country if you're into modern music. It also has a good amount of techie stuff which has been covered by Slashdot in the last week.

When Are You Dead?

dontPanik Interesting (516 comments)

Interesting article, but I'm going to categorize it under scare-mongering. I'll accept the next to nothing possibility of being still alive while they take my organs, if that means saving other's lives.

DARPA Investing In Electric Brain Stimulation To Train Snipers Quickly

dontPanik Great Read (124 comments)

Really liked this article. I've experienced "flow" to a limited degree when playing music and playing video games, it's something I'd like to be able to attain more. The only time I really enter "flow" when playing music is when I'm improvising with other musicians and I get really 'in the zone' with what I'm playing.

DARPA Investing In Electric Brain Stimulation To Train Snipers Quickly

dontPanik Re:Snipers? WTF? (124 comments)

A lot of shooting (accurately) depends on eye-hand coordination and motor learning to control superfluous movements that can mess up a shot. Will this stimulation do anything for that?

Actually the article says the exact same thing you said! In the article it says that professional soccer player's play-styles are different from beginner and amateur player's play-styles in that pros have less superfluous movements.

Have I Lost My Gaming Mojo?

dontPanik Yeah.. (418 comments)

As a college aged kid I'm also finding it harder to enjoy video games as I used to.
It is something that can be grown out of, people change yadda yadda...

All I know is that I can't be mesmorized by a video game experience anymore as I could when I was younger.

Porn Maker Sues 7,000+ For Copyright Infringement

dontPanik Good. (374 comments)

You know what? Good for the porn company.
It's messed up that the EFF thinks that it's not okay to sue thousands of people at once. In my eyes, it seems like that's the best way to deal with it.
I mean, piracy is messed up. I pirate things, but I know that pirating things doesn't help the people that create it. Music, movies, books, porn, no matter what you are pirating it. The only way to sensibly deal with this in court is to deal with everyone who's committing the "crime" (I say crime in quotations because I'm not going to say if piracy is really a crime).
So I say good job porn makers. You guys are getting shafted, and it is messed up.

The Galaxy May Have Billions of Habitable Planets

dontPanik Re:Pointless (380 comments)

Considering most of the planets in our solar system have an atmosphere, it is not that far fetched...

That's all well and good, but I'm really a sucker for oxygen.

The Galaxy May Have Billions of Habitable Planets

dontPanik Pointless (380 comments)

This is such a stupid article. It doesn't take into account atmosphere or presence of water at all. The only data the the guy uses is that there happens to be one planet 20 light years away that is roughly the same size as Earth. That is the only data he uses to come to his conclusion. What a waste of time.

World Cup Prediction Failures

dontPanik Dataset (312 comments)

Going back to the old story and looking at what data the companies used to predict the outcome, it doesn't surprise me it's inaccurate. They used:

  • Betting market data
  • Elo ratings
  • Salary data
  • Historical World Cup data
  • Socioeconomic data

While that's not a bad way to start, what seems to be more important is how well the team plays together and the chemistry and attitude of the team in general. As we saw with England (and France), you can put a bunch of great soccer players on one team, but that doesn't mean they're going to play well together.
