I derive a great amount of personal satisfaction from learning and understanding how things work. I find I'm definitely a minority in that respect. It saddens me.

Apple is LCD (lowest common denominator) computing with aesthetics that are light-years ahead of everyone else. What a beautiful way to have a LCD flashlight. If they could mesh with people who actually perform work, it would be epic.

Best Seating Arrangement For a Team of Developers?

dr_strang round table (520 comments)

Unless you have an 8 hour a day meeting in mind, it's counterproductive.

Developers like to share ideas and get direction periodically and then go work in solitude.

dr_strang Re: why still popular? (472 comments)

I agree. AVG was awesome up until 8.5. 9.0 is the buggiest resource-hogging, system-locking piece of shit I've seen since Norton and Mcafee. Problem is 9.0 came out about ten minutes after I renewed our company's license for 2 years.

Do IT Pros Abuse Their Power?

...are Fark and Digg considered 'technical culture' sites. Seriously, this isn't 2001. Last time I checked, the Internet had sort of entered the mainstream and 'slacking off at work' isn't really considered exclusively IT.

top disables searching for U.S. IPs

dr_strang dr_strang writes  |  about 7 years ago

dr_strang (32799) writes "Torrent indexing site appears to have disabled torrent searches for IPs that originate in the United States. Instead of a results page, users are directed to this page, which states:
Torrentspy Acts to Protect Privacy
Sorry, but because you are located in the USA you cannot use the search features of the website.Torrentspy's decision to stop accepting US visitors was NOT compelled by any Court but rather an uncertain legal climate in the US regarding user privacy and an apparent tension between US and European Union privacy laws.

Best small business Anti-Virus package for WinTel?

dr_strang dr_strang writes  |  more than 7 years ago

dr_strang (32799) writes "In these times of surreptitious payola and suspect 'page ranking', it's hard to find truly unbiased reviews for software. As the sysadmin for my company, I am looking to replace the notoriously clunky and resource-intensive Network Associates package and find a truly lightweight, effective and easy to manage anti-virus suite for our smallish (under 100 devices) network, including XP Pro machines and 2003 servers. I haven't been able to find very many reviews that address the largest concern I have, which is the biggest problem I have with Network Associates: resource hogging. If you have insights to share or know of review sites that are fair and informative, I'd love to hear it."
