Ask Slashdot: Unattended Maintenance Windows?

drummerboybac Re: I have automated maintenances in the form of . (265 comments)

Most of these patches are happening on systems that are in some remote data center that's not in your physical office location anyway. So I see no difference connecting remotely to the servers from your house vs connecting remotely from your office

You Are What You're Tricked Into Eating

drummerboybac Re: ipad? (499 comments)

It's not an excuse at all, but suggesting people who work 12 hour days aren't cooking due to boredom and the solution is to grab a tablet and watch tv while cooking is asinine. A better answer would be preparing large quantities of freezable meals earlier in the week to be used when time is short, and buying in bulk to defray costs.

You Are What You're Tricked Into Eating

drummerboybac ipad? (499 comments)

The OP was talking about people who are working 2-3 jobs and dont have time to cook, and your solution is to take their $500 iPAD and watch pay TV while cooking?!? Talk about a lack of perspective.

You Are What You're Tricked Into Eating

drummerboybac Ever priced healthful food out? (499 comments)

The most basic cable packages are like $20/month. or like 4 hours of work at minumum wage a month. $20 isnt going to buy healthful food for a family of 4 for more than a couple days a month. Most people are going to look at it as something like "I can have two or three days of healthy meals a month, and still eat crap the other 27 days or so, or I can just stick with my crap food, and actually have something to do between my 3 shitty jobs that leave me so tired I cant do anything but sit on a couch"

Or, you could use a pebble that syncs to your smartphone app, which gives you the benefit of not trying to awkwardly look at your arm or try to pull a smartphone out while running.

I gotta say thats a good point. I've been using unity as my UI at work and hadn't thought about the universal application list being missing. Is there something that can be installed to deal with that while still using Unity?

Slashdot Tries Something New; Audience Responds!

drummerboybac Re:Why? (2219 comments)

If you are going to claim it sucks, you need to enumerate at least SOME of the reasons you feel that way.

For example, why should a comment need a title if I am reply to a previous comment. If you want to give people a way to change the title easily one, but prepopulate it with Re: PREVIOUS TITLE, and everybody wins.

HP CEO Meg Whitman To Employees: No More Telecommuting For You

drummerboybac Re:vpns (477 comments)

SSH into internal servers certainly does require a VPN, unless you are exposing port 22 to the internet for every Linux/UNIX box you have. If you have a VPN that operates on certificates like OpenVPN, its not really that much of an inconvenience really. just flip it on once in the morning and be done with it.

You know with time and a pentalobe screwdriver, you can replace the battery with a 3rd party one? What you want is the ability to swap batteries on the fly, which most people don't need or care about.

Judge postpones webcast in BMG Music v. Tenenbaum

drummerboybac drummerboybac writes  |  more than 5 years ago

drummerboybac (1003077) writes "From the Boston Globe
The nation's first free live public webcast of a federal court hearing — one concerning a lawsuit by the US recording industry against a Boston University graduate student accused of downloading music illegally — has been postponed for a month.

Gertner denied the RIAA's request for a permanent stay but said in a ruling late Tuesday that postponing the hearing until Feb. 24 "will allow the First Circuit an opportunity to fully consider the petition before it.""

Wii to have Pay to Play?

drummerboybac drummerboybac writes  |  more than 6 years ago

drummerboybac writes "It sounds like Nintendo's free online service may not be so free after all. This is coming from ign.com
"During a Game Developers Conference session called "Planning the Wii Menu" today, Nintendo's Takashi Aoyama announced a new Pay to Play program. This will be a new version of the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection (NWFC). Aoyama explained that NWFC will remain a free service, but forthcoming experiences will require users to pay a fee to enjoy. These services will fall under the new NWFC: Pay to Play program. Games that utilize the new service will feature a logo similar to the one used for NWFC but is orange and reads Pay to Play at the bottom."

Could this be a precursor to a possible Nintendo MMO?"
