2 US Senators Propose 12-Cent Gas Tax Increase

drwho Re:Yes, let's tax the poor (619 comments)

my comp keeps crashing before I can paste all of my assumptions, but I see a typial rural person as pay an addition $8.10 per week with this tax. that's probably 3/4 - 4/5 an hour of wages, and is enough to make a basic dinner for a family of 4. Think of that.

2 US Senators Propose 12-Cent Gas Tax Increase

drwho Re:Yes, let's tax the poor (619 comments)

Agreed. But hey, how about taxing the super/ultra high-octane gas that the rich put into their speedsters and limos? They always buy premium because they feel their expensive car needs quality, gourmet fuel.

2 US Senators Propose 12-Cent Gas Tax Increase

drwho bad idea (619 comments)

gas taxes have a disproportionate effect on the rural and low-income. If you want to tax gas, tax the high-octane blend that the rich put in their high-perormance cars, and leave 'regular' alone.

Why San Francisco Is the New Renaissance Florence

drwho Such ego..wow..many fails. fear. (250 comments)

San Francisco has a lot of things going for it, but humility is not one of them. Neither is affordability, nor freedom from crime, nor civil rights. In fact, the only real thing going for it is easy access to drugs and lots of high-paying jobs.

Israeli Group To Attempt Moon Landing

drwho A colony? (150 comments)

This would be really great, the first step towards an Israeli colony on the moon. This ought to give them enough room, without being shoulder-to-shoulder with hostile neighbors.

Who Makes the Best Hard Disk Drives?

drwho SCSI (444 comments)

It used to be, that SCSI drives were commercial quality and expensive, and IDE drives were junk consumer. But SCSI drives were expected to be adequately cooled, and some of the old Seagate 4GB SCSI drives had a high failure rate because of inadequate cooling. I wonder if this doesn't translate into modern drives as well, with Seagate expecting that its cooling requirements be followed, or exceeded, while others are more suited to punishment.

Ask Slashdot: How Can I Improve My Memory For Study?

drwho interaction of mind components (384 comments)

There are different parts of the brain; one which is careful, considerate, and can deal with new tasks but is slow. The other is faster, but sloppier and harder to train. This is instinct. When the two of these work in harmony, the results are great. Train your instinct by many attempts via your considerate mind, with various amounts of attention and varying inputs, but with measurable correctness. Use your deliberate mind to do a quick sanity check on what your instinctual mind presents, but sharpen ways to judge quickly.

Gameplay can be good for this. For instance, playing solitaire on the computer. Sure, solitaire isn't a valuable life skill of itself, but you can exercise your brain and build confidence in your learning systems with it. Action games also provide this, in varying degrees.

Of course, nutrition is also important.

Another 3 1/2 years go by

drwho drwho writes  |  more than 2 years ago

Another 3 1/2 years ago by. Slashdot hasn't changed much. But I feel rather more alienated from the alarmism than ever. Perhaps I am jaded and fatalistic. Time goes by and I find that loud and dirty people annoy me more than large corporations. Yes, Bank of America wants to charge fees for using the debit card at stores now...so what, I'll just move my money to a bank that doesn't. More of the same in other ways as well. Getting and keeping money seems to be more important than it was years ago, when I first started using Slashdot. I guess I am just getting old...or is it mature?

Wow...it's been 6 to 7 years since I wrote in this journal thing. A dog year. A statute of limitations. Enough time for me to have acquired by doctoral degree. Enough time to get married and have kids. But I didn't do that.

When did i create my slashdot account? it would be nice to know. I'd guess 1997.
