Texas Town Turns To Treated Sewage For Drinking Water

eliphalet Re:because drinking water is so pristine (242 comments)

The other thing they do in Orange County is that instead of using the water directly, they pump the water upstream and inject it into the ground so it replenishes the aquifer.

5.1 Earthquake Hits California

eliphalet Re:Other quakes today (114 comments)

The earthquakes in Oklahoma aren't all in the same spot. I would be interesting if several of these small quakes were to happen at about the same time and the vibrations intersect.

The 3D Economy — What Happens When Everyone Prints Their Own Shoes?

eliphalet Re:Automobile tires? (400 comments)

This assumes that a tire has to be made out of vulcanized rubber, etc. Part of the evolution of 3D printing will be the development of new materials and printing processes that are suitable for products to be printed.

TSA: Confiscating Aluminum Foil and Watching Out For Solar Powered Bombs

eliphalet Re:They still have not caught a single terrorist. (289 comments)

You could use aluminum foil, lye and water to make hydrogen gas. The airline supplies the water on board..

TSA: Confiscating Aluminum Foil and Watching Out For Solar Powered Bombs

eliphalet Re:RTFA (I know... sorry) (289 comments)

When I read the headline, I thought that TSA was thinking of someone using the foil to make a parabolic mirror to burn something.

A New Use For Drones: Traffic Scouting

eliphalet Re:Why manual controls? (144 comments)

Controlling the drone manually suggests that the controller is watching via the camera in the drone. In California, at least, watching video visible from the driver's seat is illegal.

Ford Exec: 'We Know Everyone Who Breaks the Law' Thanks To Our GPS In Your Car

eliphalet Re:Why does Ford need this data? (599 comments)

Actually, Ford's system does not have its own cell phone a la OnStar. It relies on you pairing your own phone if you choose to.

Lawmakers Out To Kill the Corn-Based Ethanol Mandate

eliphalet Re:Maybe this corn can be used for food again? (314 comments)

I would think that sweet corn has a whole different infrastructure for farming, storage and distribution than feed corn.

Lawmakers Out To Kill the Corn-Based Ethanol Mandate

eliphalet Re:Maybe this corn can be used for food again? (314 comments)

It's not just the corn; it's the ethanol. Ethanol is a poor excuse for a bio-fuel: low energy and not well-suited for pipelines because it is corrosive and absorbs water.

Auto Makers To Standardize On Open Source

eliphalet Re:MS isn't a major player and I don't like this i (160 comments)

MS is not a big player in car infotainment.

My new Ford C-Max Hybrid, with the infamous MyFordTouch, has a Microsoft label on the dash and a Microsoft EULA in the owner's manual.

First Ever Public Tasting of Lab-Grown Cultured Beef Burger

eliphalet Kosher bacon (303 comments)

Of course, it's still not from a cud-chewing cloven-hoofed animal. Whether it is meat is a more philosophical question.

Politician Wants Sci-fi To Be Mandatory In School

eliphalet Re:Fahrenheit 451 (295 comments)

Ray Bradbury's novels and stories are great not just because of any message that they might contain, but because of his colorful and evocative writing style. That makes them worthy of school curricula and attractive to teen-age readers.

Solar Panels For Every Home?

eliphalet Re:"Grid Parity" ... on sunny days only (735 comments)

I get calls all the time (so much for Do Not Call) from companies that want to put solar panels on my roof at their expense and charge me for the power that I would use, at lower rates than the local electric utility charges. But I live 2 miles from the beach and don't have air conditioning, so I interrupt their sales pitch and point out that my monthly electric bill is only around $30, much less than their minimum of $100 or more. They go away immediately.

With Pot Legal, Scientists Study Detection of Impaired Drivers

eliphalet Re:Field Sobriety Test (608 comments)

I was on a jury once in a case of driving under the influence of Xanax, an anti-anxiety prescription drug. Two problems with the case: the driver was physically disabled, so he would have had trouble with the field sobriety test anyway; also, there is no legal standard (at least in California) for a minimum blood Xanax measurement that causes impairment.
