Bethesda: We Can't Make Dawnguard Work On the PS3

emanem Re:The RAM is the issue. (371 comments)

Don't want to spoil the game for you, but for example there's a level where you're ou a boat and the boat is procedurally moved by a simulated sea, and at one point it capsizes 90 dynamically and all the geometry changes. That is quite complex imho.

When I run HoN on Linux 64, with ps I can see it uses 91-95% of RAM... and I've got 2 GB so....

Bethesda: We Can't Make Dawnguard Work On the PS3

emanem Re:The RAM is the issue. (371 comments)

But that's the thing, you know? What I'm really wondering is all the artwork, textures, models and so on, how the hell do they fit all of that in only 256+256? have you seen Uncharted 3? :-) Like, HoN doesn't have the graphical complexity of Uncharted 3 but sucks up 1.9 GB of RAM....

Bethesda: We Can't Make Dawnguard Work On the PS3

emanem Re:The RAM is the issue. (371 comments)

Can you believe? Was playing a game on Linux (Heroes of Newerth) and alone that one sucks ~2GB of RAM (plus some other chunk of VRAM)... Otoh I just finished Uncharted 3 on the PS3. Awesome game, great graphics and everything else. How the hell did they manage to fit it in only 256+256 MBytes of RAM?!?!?!

What Makes Parallel Programming Difficult?

emanem Re:Honestly... (196 comments)

Fair play mate!

I guess you won't be explaining the cache line size issue and memory alignment too, right? :-)
As I said, thumbs up at least for the effort!

Cheers!

Ps. Questions for Java experts, how does the JVM (the best implementation btw) deal with cache line size and memory alignment issues? Is there any optimization in this area?

Writing Linux Kernel Functions In CUDA With KGPU

emanem Re:Question: (101 comments)

I've written kernel code in both OpenGL (GPGPU old school)/OpenCL.
Main issue might be context switching? Or writing GPU binary code without having to compile via driver (i.e. a la math accelerator FPU?)
Cheers!

Apple: "We must Have Comprehensive Location Data"

emanem Re:Fascists (556 comments)

They sell hardware and software, I'm all about free choice for people, if you want to let them collect data and eventually blackmail you, well if you like it just let them do it.
But in this case the fact they don't tells the pigs they do makes me smell about fascism.
This is only the beginning!

Apple: "We must Have Comprehensive Location Data"

Hehahhehahe this is why I really don't like Apple products... my GF just bought and iPhone 4 and in order to use it she had to activate with iTunes... WTF?!?!
Does this seems logical? Why? Just because they want to sell songs/books/movies with their online store? WTF I just want a phone!!!
Lol @ iPhone users...

I not Iran u have to worry for...Apple itself might use it to blackmail and/or intimidate you...
Knowing exactly where and when you are is a good start to track a person in his private life...think that they might get your emails passwords, your bank account with the iPry app and BOOM!, you're just a pawn in their hands.
Just sad...

Taking the Fun Out of StarCraft II

I guess the feeling of relief when a match is won and "I don't want to do that again" are very common to eSports then... if Blizzard wanted to make an eSport then they've centered the target 100%.

How to read slashdot on a Blackberry/Nokia E7*?

emanem emanem writes  |  more than 4 years ago

emanem (1356033) writes "Hello Slashdot. For various reasons I can only access Slashdot with my mobile (Nokia E71 to be exact).
Is there a way to make the site readable with such devices? I really enjoy reading it, but apparently is very hard with such phones.
Anyone has any kind of suggestions?

NZB client for Linux

emanem emanem writes  |  more than 4 years ago

emanem (1356033) writes "Hi Slashdot, I've recently coded this NZB client. It is not flashy like LottaNZB, but it just works .
All started because I needed to investigate an issue with my ISP, because LottaNZB wasn't properly working (here the discussion); then I decided to polish the sources and release it!
It's done in C++, developed on Ubuntu for Linux. It's released under the GPL v3.
After having tested with Valgrind as well I thnk it's ok to be released.
I need your expertise/suggestions on how to release it or even if you want to give me hints about the code/software itself, you're more than welcome to do so!
Everything is available here!"

How could I improve my new experimental website?

emanem emanem writes  |  about 5 years ago

emanem writes "Dear Slashdot, both as an experiment, both as a way to have fun developing a dynamic website, I've released the YouLink website.
This is about simple link sharing between users: users can post, rate and most of all search through all the links of the site itself. At the moment I decided to keep it as simple as possible and I haven't used any other Web 2.0 technology (eg, no AJAX).
What do you think about it?
How can I improve it? How could I make it more popular?
As you can see this website is just a so called experiment, I haven't put any ads in it (yes it's ad-free)...but I'd just like to see it improved and how it would work if many more users were actively using it.
The site itself is made with Perl/MySQL; everything runs and has been developed on Linux (Ubuntu).
Cheers"

How to get a PC without Vista (and/or with Linux)?

emanem emanem writes  |  more than 5 years ago

emanem (1356033) writes "Hi Slashdot,
I'm trying to buy a Desktop PC from all the major vendors (eg Dell).
The problem is that it's hard to find Linux (Ubuntu) pre installed and when you find it is usually on poor (hardware) configurations.
How can I buy a decent Desktop PC with Linux and/or at least without Windows?
The fact that major PC vendors don't give you the possibility to have a clean PC, isn't against the EU rules?
Doesn't this fact go against monopoly market position?
Please Slashdot, give me some suggestions!"

Banned by Blizzard because writing the truth?

emanem emanem writes  |  more than 5 years ago

emanem (1356033) writes "Hi slashdot, I got permanent banned from Blizzard because of this post ( You can google it).
Generally speaking, do you think that exposing a point of view that clashes with game's owner (Blizzard) is enough to get banned?
Do you think I was saying the truth?
Was I so harsh?"

FPS on PS3/Console

emanem emanem writes  |  more than 5 years ago

emanem (1356033) writes "Hi Slashdot, I recently bought a PS3 and got the following games: Haze, FarCry 2, Resistance 2. Being a FPS PC aficionado (keyboard+mouse, I play http://www.warsow.net/ on Linux) I have 3 questions: 1) It takes a while to get used to the dualshock instead of keyb+mouse; has anyone any suggestion to get 'in a good shape' pretty fast? For people which have good experience on both platforms, what is the best to play FPS? 2) Would be possible that since FarCry2 is multi-platform the devs toned it down because they couldn't properly optimize it for any given platform (eg. PS3)? Am I the only one that sees Resistance 2 graphics far superior than FarCry 2 (at least on PS3)? 3) I played both games (just finished Resistance 2) and considering that here in the UK FarCry 2 is over advertised (TV, tube, ...) I would expect a great game; I didn't know anything about Resistance 2 and in the end Resistance 2 revealed to be way better than FarCry 2 (solo game, plot, graphics, ...); has anyone played both? What are your impressions? Am I too over critic about FarCry 2? Cheers!"
