US Plunges To 46th In World Press Freedom Index

fatphil Re:How does press freedom drop because of leaks? (357 comments)

He does have that right unless he is considered an enemy combatant, or for several other reasons. Ignore the quotable headlines and soundbites, the devil's in the smallprint.

Customer: Dell Denies Speaker Repair Under Warranty, Blames VLC

fatphil Re:A "clipped" audio signal is still a valid signa (526 comments)

Ignore everything you just read on wikipedia, what you quoted isn't just wrong, it's 180 degrees wrong. A gently-ramped up signal that sits at the maximum value forever and a day and then gently ramps down has the *maximum area possible* under it, and yet is one of the safest waveforms to play to a driver.

Boycott Dell. Boycott slashdot. 23:23 here - I'm outahere, no other stories look interesting.

Snowden Used Software Scraper, Say NSA Officials

It must be stopped!

And it's 23:something here, so for me the boycott starts very soon.

Here's to increased productivity for (at least) a week.

Just in case...

Leonard Nimoy: Smoking Is Illogical

fatphil Re:Illogical (401 comments)

No, he tells you a fictional story, not necessarily of his own composition, when you ask him too.

Why is that a positive trait when the requester and recipient is a child at bedtime, but not a positive trait when the requester and recipient is an adult?

Finnish Police Board Wants Justification For Wikipedia's Fundraising Campaign

Not next week though, for obvious reasons. Just because the poo-flinging has died down doesn't mean there's no boycott.

Bitcoin Plunges After Mt. Gox Exchange Halts Trades

fatphil Re:Enough with this "fuck beta" nonsense. (249 comments)

> whining about style changes.

If you're too stupid to have noticed the functional changes, then you're quite simply too stupid for pretty much anything. In particular as people have repeatedly whined about those functional changes.

Enjoy your dumbed-down slashdot beta, you sound like a perfect match for it.

Ask Slashdot: Why Are We Still Writing Text-Based Code?

fatphil Re:Dataflow languages? (876 comments)

Not all.

I've seen some wonderful audio-processing (functional/mathematical) code which was entirely software in implementation, but entirely graphical in design. You could literally build your own Yamaha DX7 (pretty much all pads, almost every one had been reverse engineered/mimicked to within indistinguishability) from just drag-and-drop boxes and a single frequency input (dependent on the keypress, obviously).

I wish I'd written it myself, I'd been thinking about such a design for about a decade. Some Finn (IIRC, don't remember the name) beat me to it (no surprise really, my inertia is high). Respect to him.

And fuck slashdot beta

US Cord Cutters Getting Snubbed From NBC's Olympic Coverage Online

fatphil Re:Why? (578 comments)

If you can find a way of viewing them that does not involve NBC, then *you are saving NBC money* as they don't need to get as many bits to as many terminal devices. You're also not violating NBC's IP rights, as they are simply middlemen. However, most importantly, you are demonstrating that NBC is *not fucking necessary*. Data distributes itself remarkably easily, and doesn't need *blockages* like NBC to restrict its flow.

Every "distributor" should go bust - you are redundant, and have been for over a decade.

Ask Slashdot: Why Are We Still Writing Text-Based Code?

fatphil Dataflow languages? (876 comments)

They're inherently graphicalisable, as long as all of the building blocks fit inside nice small rectangles.

Having said that - ``|'' and ``>'' are graphical. So probably all shell programming is in part visual.

Having said that, that the fuck am I on?!?!?!? I write perl, and perl looks like ASCII art, it certainly doesn't look like text.

Mod down story, story bollocks.

Fuck beta.

Slashdot Tries Something New; Audience Responds!

fatphil Re:Go after the advertisers (2219 comments)

A noisy prick with better grammar (or spelling depending on what mistake you think has been made) than you.

I'd rather listen to angry noisy people with conviction than people who just put up with whatever wave of shit washes over them next.

(Appologies for not invoking Skitt's Law in the above.)

Fuck Gaurav Kuchhal the fuckup, Head of Product at Slashdot.
http://www.diceholdingsinc.com/phoenix.zhtml?c=211152&p=irol-newsArticle&ID=1781836&highlight=

That press release still mentions and quotes Alice Hill the fuckup. However it positions here clearly in "DICE" rather than Slashdot-anything.

Slashdot Tries Something New; Audience Responds!

fatphil Re:Credit where credit is due (2219 comments)

I worked for a company that's been mentioned on /. about 100 times in the last 5 years, it was so dysfunctional.

I would contend that in the context of slashdot beta, the method of making it right is to scrap it. Pretending you didn't make a huge fuckup simply breeds (even more) distrust.

California Bill Proposes Mandatory Kill-Switch On Phones and Tablets

fatphil Re:They've got it wrong (341 comments)

Yet many I know are having a bit of a pro-anonymity backlash, and are preferring to pay for everything with cash now. As someone who buys almost all his food fresh from the local open-air market (yes, even when it's -15C, that's what hats and coats are for), anything apart from cash simply isn't even an option.

Russia Bans Bitcoin

fatphil Re:they should ban (207 comments)

I don't know, why not ask them. However, the fact that Perens has done this before implies that he does see a need for such a community. And OkianWarrior has a good backing of us ranters too.

Anyway, we're not whiny, we're loud and obnoxious, there's a difference. We were whiny between 6 months and 3 days ago, while beta was just this thing they were dicking about with. Whiny was useless.

What Alice Hill, President at Slashdot Media, writes on her Linked-In page:

Proven track record innovating and improving iconic websites
(Slashdot.org, ...) while protecting their voice and brand integrity

She's the one claiming to be responsible for this fuck-up. She's the one who needs nuking from orbit (it's the only way to be sure).

Mason 2.0 finally announced

fatphil fatphil writes  |  more than 3 years ago

fatphil writes "Best described in the words of the author, Jonathan Swartz:
Mason is a powerful Perl-based templating system, designed to generate dynamic content of all kinds.
Mason 2.x comes ten years after Mason 1.0 (known as HTML::Mason) and twelve years after the original Mason release. It has been rearchitected and reimplemented from the ground up. That said, the philosophy and core syntax are similar enough that it should still be recognizable and "feel like Mason" to existing users.

There's more at Jonathan's blog, at http://www.openswartz.com/2011/02/21/announcing-mason-2/ , but suspect the perl cpan servers will serve up documentation more reliably"
