Google Launches PayPal Rival

feamsr00 more info (449 comments)

It would seem I wasnt fast enough to post this story, but I had a couple more links and useful info, so here it is:

Google Checkout has been released today. From their blog: We've heard time and again from users: "I find great stores through Google search, but every time I try to buy from an online store, I have to re-enter the same billing, shipping, and credit card information. There are too many steps. Why can't it be as fast as a Google search?" This motivated us to improve the online purchase process, and so today we're announcing Google Checkout, a checkout option that makes buying across the web fast and easy."
Google CheckOut includes single signon and badges on adwords of merchants that use Google CheckOut.
Features include using many addresses and many different cards for buyers and a "Payment Guarantee" against chargebacks for sellers.
AdWords users get $10 in sales processed for free for every $1 spent on AdWords.

For those of us text weary, there are videos for buyers and sellers

feamsr00 writes "An explosion at online payment processor Paypal caused property damage, but resulted in no injuries. The company's web site, one of the Internet's busiest e-commerce sites, remained online throughout the incident.

The explosion Tuesday night at Paypal's network operations center in San Jose shattered a window and forced the evacuation of 26 employees, according to local media reports. Law enforcement officials said they "have suspicions" about what may have caused the blast, but did not detail them. The investigation team included members of the local police bomb squad.

Netcraft has the story and uptime graphs."

feamsr00 writes "as reported from eWeek: "As mainframe developers migrate from legacy systems to new languages and environments, PHP should be on the short list", said Wayne Duquaine, a speaker at the Share conference, director of software development at Grandview Systems, and longtime mainframe programmer who now helps others to adapt to new technologies.

"For those that elect to stay in the field and avoid early retirement, they have no choice" but to re-tool and learn new technologies, Duquaine said. PHP also features a short development time, Duquaine said. PHP scripts are 5-to-10 times more productive than hand-coding a server application in Java or C from scratch...

IBM has not officially announced support for the Zend Core on the z/OS operating system for the z/Series mainframe, but sources said that is the direction IBM is leaning toward. Today, Zend Core for IBM runs on Linux and IBM's AIX operating systems.

"Zend and IBM are aware of customer demands for z/OS and they are discussing the options to provide [that] to the market, but no announcement yet," said a spokesperson for Zend. "Basically, what we want to do is make sure that the people who are using the mainframe can use the language of their choice, whether it's PHP or COBOL," said Sridhar Iyengar, an IBM distinguished engineer.

Zend Core for IBM provides an out-of-the-box PHP development and production environment, supported by Zend and integrated with IBM's Cloudscape and DB2 programs, according to the companies.

It is also covered over on the Zend Developer Zone"
